Storm Ashley. Where is she?

We’re west coast of Scotland so very exposed.
Husband planned to make a trip to B&Q to collect supplies for current building work. I talked him out of it as didn’t think it wise to drive with items on roof of car during a storm. Forecast predicted wind gusts of 40mph from 4am.

I’ve been awake on and off since then and so far, no gusts!

Husband now making frantic dash to B&Q!

Has the wind picked up for anyone else yet?

Belfast here, was lovely sunny and breezy but just gone grey and can hear the wind really getting up now.

Tarkan · 20/10/2024 14:33

I'm on the east coast in Angus, it was windy overnight and pretty stormy this morning but just sunny and breezy now. We'll see how it goes later.

Near Manchester and our very heavy planters with trellis have blown over and made a right mess, wasn't expecting it to be bad here!

Near Manchester too and all is calm ?!

@Mademetoxic

Looks like Manchester (airport) is towards the southern fringe of the area really effected by the storm itself….as you say not much wind now but as the low pressure system tracks north eastwards across Scotland at Manchester it is supposed to get a bit windy out of the south west, maybe until around midnight, but not the sort of winds some further north might get.

MrJeremyFisher · 20/10/2024 14:46

Just a regular windy day in the Hebrides here, nothing out of the ordinary yet.

Wait for it..the weather at Benbecula might get sporty later on though whether it’s going to be that abnormal ??

I’ve not followed this storm that closely until today when this thread popped up but it looks like the Met office generic warnings for the general public have made people think it was going to be windy from the get go, everywhere. That’s maybe why the ?? started this morning , as in where is it? and perhaps people were thinking it had gone through.

Most of the more specialist forecasts designed for use by, for example, those in the aviation industry have only really had the winds due to the low pressure system itself picking up in Scotland from early PM onwards, which might just be starting to happen.

MrJeremyFisher · 20/10/2024 15:05

@notimagain You're probably right. I've just let the dog out and it's definitely beginning to pick up here now.

TentEntWenTyfOur · 20/10/2024 15:06

Checking in from East Anglia - overcast and drizzling, and a bit blustery.

PotterHead1985 · 20/10/2024 15:07

South east leinster here. We got one of those fronts mentioned upthread early this morning. Pissing rain and blowing. Then it dries up and lessoned. She's picked up some steam again in the last half our and has gone from southerly to a little bit cyclonic. It's apparently gonna piss rain again soon too

maldivemoment · 20/10/2024 15:40

Think I’m turning into a weather geek! I’m loving this thread & all the knowledgeable folks with your “little bit cyclonic” (@PotterHead1985 ) and such like terms!

Thanks for making me smile!

too noisy to be near a chimney or window in N Co.Kerry 9 miles inland according to parents

weathergirl289 · 20/10/2024 15:46

Getting very cloudy here now and lots of bangs being heard as presumably the roadworks signs outside are being blown over. Looks like it'll rain heavily any moment.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/10/2024 16:07

Just been for an invigorating walk along Lytham prom. We arrived a bit after high tide, it's the first time we've ever seen the salt marshes covered right up so I think there was probably a bit of storm surge.

IrishSee · 20/10/2024 16:16

Very windy here on the IoM but lovely and sunny. It's not as bad as I was expecting tbh. Great day for wave watching from indoors! Boats and planes cancelled though, and one DC who has their room on the SE corner of the house, is moaning about the noise from the wind disturbing their gaming!

ReginaaPhalangee · 20/10/2024 17:14

Central Scotland and its dark, rainy and winds are picking up a bit.

Been out and secured all garden furniture etc, closed all blinds and curtains in the rooms with doors shut to keep the heat in and sound of the gusts down.

Hoping for a cosy night watching the F1 tbh lol!

Might work from home tomorrow depending on if it's still windy in the morning...

SinnerBoy · 20/10/2024 17:24

My daughter said it was rainy earlier, not much wind, then nice and sunny all afternoon. Coastal Newcastle.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 20/10/2024 17:30

@ErrolTheDragon there is a higher than usual tide today and again in the early hours of tomorrow morning, not a good combination when high winds forecast too.

For info that’s pretty much exactly what you would expect given what is on the Met office charts.

The rain earlier, and perhaps gusty winds, will have been due to the front (an occluded one FWIW) that was proceeding the low pressure system and swept across the UK earlier today…

You’d then expect a clearance behind that…finally you then might get the weather (stronger winds and perhaps showers) that is actually associated with the south side of the low pressure, dependent on how far south the system really makes itself felt

Newcastle airport forecast has it getting quite windy there between now and midnight (as the low tracks west>east, a long way north), but no precipitation.

coffeesaveslives · 20/10/2024 17:49

Blowing a gale here in Cumbria, can hear it howling down the chimney. Forecast is 78mph winds later today.

DaisyLadies · 20/10/2024 19:24

Lincs here! It’s really getting windy where I am, my bin just fell over 😅😂

weathergirl289 · 20/10/2024 19:50

Really windy here now too. Our bin blew all the way down the driveway and straight into a neighbour's car. Thankfully no damage done! It sounds so wild outside though. Very glad I don't have anywhere to be until mid-morning tomorrow. Stay safe everyone.

coffeesaveslives · 20/10/2024 19:55

We had a tree down near us and a bunch of properties without power too.

Hoppinggreen · 20/10/2024 20:01

Just arrived here in West Yorkshire

TheShellBeach · 20/10/2024 20:01

Ha! Our bin's just fallen over.

Deadringer · 20/10/2024 20:07

Very wild in dublin. A garden parasol just flew into our driveway like a javelin and hit dh's car.
