Storm Ashley. Where is she?

We’re west coast of Scotland so very exposed.
Husband planned to make a trip to B&Q to collect supplies for current building work. I talked him out of it as didn’t think it wise to drive with items on roof of car during a storm. Forecast predicted wind gusts of 40mph from 4am.

I’ve been awake on and off since then and so far, no gusts!

Husband now making frantic dash to B&Q!

Has the wind picked up for anyone else yet?

I know apps like windy are useful but they don’t often paint the full picture, a lot of the weather last night/this AM seems to have been associated with a couple of frontal systems that are wrapped around the Ashley low pressure system and in places have preceded it.

As a result some locations, especially “up north” got clobbered by those fronts earlier today but they then might get a second wave of high winds and showers as they experience the effects of the main part of Ashley itself later today.

I know they appear old tech but the Uk Met Office surface charts show both the low pressure system and the fronts, toggling through those might give a better idea of what is going on than some of the apps.

It's in Cardiff

PippyPip · 20/10/2024 11:27

It’s been pretty blowy here (Highlands) but it’s to really pick up this evening and overnight.

The Met office is showing an amber warning from Mull of Kintyre up to Lewis & Harris and Cape Wrath. Yellow for Shetlands, down to Northumberland and through to South Wales, up the Irish Sea, in at Kilkeel and more or less the Donegal border.

I'm near Glasgow and it's definitely breezy but the sun is shining and we have bright blue skies at the moment. A couple of fluffy white clouds but mostly bright and sunny. Wondering where Ashley is too but presumably she'll be along later.

Shhhthedogssleeping · 20/10/2024 13:37

West Yorkshire, very wet this morning but no wind to speak of. Brightening up now. Looking at the trees I’d say it’s breezy but nothing unusual. I don’t think we are in the firing line though.

TheShellBeach · 20/10/2024 13:41

We're in the Mull of Kintyre and nothing is happening yet.

Juniperberries200 · 20/10/2024 13:43

North Antrim coast, Northern Ireland. It's gusty here but we've had sunshine and no rain. Looking like it's dulling down and the wind is picking up.
Edited for typo.

QuestionableMouse · 20/10/2024 13:43

The worst of it seems to have already passed over! Windy and rainy here but nothing unusual for the time of year!

Taytocrisps · 20/10/2024 13:46

I'm in Leinster and the wind has been picking up over the past half hour or so. No rain yet though.

GhostCicada · 20/10/2024 13:46

I'm in the west of Ireland, she's outside my house at the moment making my roof rattle.

LordFartQuads · 20/10/2024 13:47

West coast of Ireland and the wind gusts are still pretty powerful currently

notimagain · 20/10/2024 13:49

@QuestionableMouse

Not sure where you are or timing on that image but for info the green band out to the East of Scotland, running down the east coast is one of the fronts I mentioned upthread (and is marked on the Met Office charts). That’s what brought rain and wind to some areas earlier today.

The actual low pressure area is in the swirl to the north west of NI, that will contain lots of showers and is only just starting to effect Scotland.

maldivemoment · 20/10/2024 13:51

West of Scotland.

Here she comes now…(I think)

FYI wind recorded at about 35 mph at RNAS Yeovilton about half an hour ago….can’t help with a forecast, sorry.

I'm in Somerton so not far away from you.

We're in the Mull of Kintyre and nothing is happening yet.

Lucky you! Funny, the picture changed after I described it, the orange vanished! I'm in Ijmuiden and it's expected here overnight / tomorrow.

icebearforpresident · 20/10/2024 13:57

I’m in Ayrshire and it’s a total non event here. Husband went for a run this morning along the sea front and said it was no windier than usual. It’s a cracking drying day, got all the sheets done in an hour.

Blarn · 20/10/2024 14:02

I'm in Birmingham and the weather since very early morning has been atrocious with wind and rain from the west hammering against te front of the house. But the Met Office was telling me it was calm and sunny! Just died down a bit.

Sallysoup · 20/10/2024 14:06

Near Manchester and our very heavy planters with trellis have blown over and made a right mess, wasn't expecting it to be bad here!

notimagain · 20/10/2024 14:06

As far as Ayrshire goes and for info Prestwick recorded reported 24 knots gusting 39 knots (roughly 27 mph gusting over 40 mph) in the last half hour or so, forecast still has it that at times later today at the airport it will be 35 knots gusting 55 knots.

barometric pressure is also still dropping there….

weathergirl289 · 20/10/2024 14:08

@icebearforpresident it's picking up a totesy bit here in Renfreshire so probably be a bit windier in Ayrshire in a little bit. The clouds are thicker than they were when I last posted and there's a few gusts of wind happening as I type too.

Goatblu · 20/10/2024 14:12

Somerset coast. We've had horizontal rain, hail and very high winds so far today.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 20/10/2024 14:20

South County Cork 💨💨💨

bigbadbarry · 20/10/2024 14:23

I’m in Cheshire. It was wet overnight and this morning but now the wind is starting to pick up and we actually have a proper lovely blue sky for the first time in ages!
