Storm Ashley. Where is she?

We’re west coast of Scotland so very exposed.
Husband planned to make a trip to B&Q to collect supplies for current building work. I talked him out of it as didn’t think it wise to drive with items on roof of car during a storm. Forecast predicted wind gusts of 40mph from 4am.

I’ve been awake on and off since then and so far, no gusts!

Husband now making frantic dash to B&Q!

Has the wind picked up for anyone else yet?

Another failed attempt! Poor passengers. I need to go to sleep but I'm so invested 😫

Crikey that got down to what, 1200 feet before lifting? Those poor passengers.

I guess we now see if Ryanair have the two attempts rule or whether they are a bit more permissive.

Very bad here in central Scotland. Picked up early evening and still really gusty now at midnight.

It's trying again?!

Storm Ashley. Where is she?
roundofapplause · 21/10/2024 00:06

I thought it was trying again but it was just lining up / delaying.

The Lanzarote one landed no problem

A flight from Geneva tried to land in Dublin. Circled several times and then diverted to ... Geneva.

PickAChew · 21/10/2024 00:13

It's down 🎉🎉🎉

That one was ok.

Why, though? Why could Jet2 land where Ryanair failed?

But the Ryanair’s failed attempt to land was from the north, after approaching from the south initially and circling anti-clockwise a couple of times before changing direction. Perhaps there really is just a difference in training, or pilot confidence?

ErrolTheDragon · 21/10/2024 00:24

Or the type of plane, I didn't notice what they were?
but a quick look suggests Ryanair and jet2 both mostly use Boeing 737s

PickAChew · 21/10/2024 00:29

The Ryanair flight was a Boeing 737.

PickAChew · 21/10/2024 00:48

Another positive. Cheap leccy. The car is on charge, tonight!

notimagain · 21/10/2024 07:01

Morning.

No it won’t be down to training/confidence. On nights like last night with the wind gusting to possibly outside aircraft limits it’s often a case of who gets lucky with the wind.

One flight arrives “over the fence” just before touchdown and the wind is within limits - they can land. A few minutes later the next one arrives and the wind has gusted to outside aircraft limits - they have to go around.

Landing direction will almost certainly been pilot’s choice after discussion with ATC.
