Just heard on the news abroad he fell from the third floor off a hotel in Buenos Aires, if true it's very sad as he was so young and seemed like a lovely guy

It's top story of dailymail now.

It took 15 minutes from being posted on Cheryl's instagram , to be the top story of the dailymail.

I was timing it , to see how fast news gets onto those news sites.

Exactly. It's like they all hate the media but they whip it up.

Are you saying they shouldn’t have said a statement? It’s probably incredibly painful for them but they want to do him justice. Cheryl’s made a big point about please be respectful with what you’re showing.

PlantHeadNo5 · 18/10/2024 20:12

I think Cheryl was between a rock and a hard place - people were demanding a statement from her, asking why she hadn’t made one yet. I think sometimes their PR recommend they do these things even if they don’t necessarily want to.

Personally think she's spot on, why the need for so many articles, the pictures of his hotel room, his body, the gossip, the constant referring to his ex girlfriend's claims, insinuating it's suicide etc.

People have literally gone out of their way and dug up dirt on a dead man who can't defend himself. A family is grieving and the media are printing the most unnecessary articles and pictures and gossip. That poor child will be able to Google all this, it will be talk of the playground.

The media and the social media detectives are truly appalling.

It always happens when its a celebrity though.

Yes in one way it is horrible.

But the other side is that when a person wants to be famous, they then become a figure of public interest.

I agree it’s wrong, but I guess it’s because there is so much public interest. It’s many the media so much money right now.

And I suppose that we here on this thread are guilty of it too.

unmemorableusername · 18/10/2024 20:28

I watched X factor when he was on it but hadn't followed 1D as I wasn't a teenager!

So when I first saw his picture I didn't recognise him. He had so much cosmetic work he looked like a different person from who I'd remembered from 2010, even given the passage of time.

I happened to be doomscrolling X when the news broke so suddenly saw all these posts in Spanish. It was being reported so differently than had it happened in the uk. The Argentinian police gave out graphic details extremely quickly.

I'm not minded to treat their investigation into his death with any respect.

I don't blame the hotel workers for selling room pictures etc. 700,000 people in Buenos Aires live in shanty towns. They have poverty unimaginable to us. If selling a picture gets their kids a better life I don't begrudge them.

As for Liam, I'm quite conflicted. He was exploited too young. I don't think under 18s should legally be allowed to sign record contracts or be on tv talent type shows.

If there was a way for his family to sue Simon Cowell etc I'd be happy with that. The industry needs to change.

But he wasn't an innocent victim either. He didn't deny that he told Maya (19 to his 26) to abort or he'd dump her then left her alone for the painful procedure.

There are reports that he was DM'ing young fans in an exploitative way.

He wasn't a steady reliable responsible father. He was 23 when he was born, already a multi millionaire so had no excuse to be a deadbeat dad.

If only someone had put him under a type of conservatorship or sectioned him. Why didn't he have a bodyguard at all times? He was worth c £30m, he could afford it?

He did seem to have a traumatic start to life- premature- only one kidney, painful daily injections as a child & recent surgery for this. Then he recently said he has ADHD and agoraphobia and has had suicidal thoughts. So turning to drink & drugs to numb all of this is quite a typical response. People were obviously exploiting him- supplying him, turning a blind eye. All this was in the public domain so his family, friends & colleagues all knew. Why were they silent then but sorrowful now? Why did none of them report him to the police? Persuade him to go back to rehab? Money & time weren't issues.

A lot of people will be feeling guilty and rightly so.

RIP Liam

But if people didn't buy the magazines and papers and didn't click on the website there would be no interest..it's been brought on by demand. It's awful. His poor child will see this no matter how much Cheryl will try and protect him.

dayswithaY · 18/10/2024 20:55

The older I get the more I realise how being famous is actually a horrible, soulless existence.

Poor Liam, where were his friends, why was he wasting time in a (what looked like) a budget hotel by himself in Argentina? Why wasn’t he spending time with Bear or doing something worthwhile?

That said, no one can help an addict except themselves.

myrtleWilson · 18/10/2024 20:58

Fair play to Cheryl, I think she was completely bang on in her calling it out

HalfWayDown · 18/10/2024 21:03

Having to tell your child their dad is dead is the most awful thing a person can go through, the damage it causes is never ending, the older they get and understand more, the grieving repeats and repeats . This was me a few years ago. She was absolutely right in what she said.

I mean its a better existence than someone living in total poverty and can't afford any food.

Liam could have done so much positive with his fame.

He just had problems . Some that were probably not related to fame

Exactly. After the insanity of 1D and that how it ends. Fucking depressing.

ThorTheDog · 18/10/2024 21:19

It's not just when you're famous either that the media and public show how disgusting they are. Look at what the media and public do to 'normal' families who suffer tragedy, like Nicola Bulleys family for example. People are cunts.

Uselessatbeingaperson · 18/10/2024 21:23

Not related but probably worthy of it's own thread. The way people are behaving is like the way people gawped at the mentally unwell or went to watch a hanging or the gladiators. People love a spectacle. There is research into the purpose and benefits to society of gossip and malicious gossip specifically, it probably explains people's behaviour over this.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 18/10/2024 21:23

The statements of his former band mates made me cry, Louis’s I found particularly touching.

it just makes me think of Elvis, just taken advantage of to make money out of and how all these years later the industry hasn’t really moved on.

Well we all talk about news stories. Sure what else have we got to talk about.

Everywhere I go most people talk about the same things: work, money, news, hobbies, family, love.

But it's strange. If you look at the videos of liam taken at niall's concert, shortly before his death, he looks happy.

I suppose we can never know what’s going on inside someone’s head. Tragic

xx, I agree w most of what you wrote, but re the allegations, there appear to be multiple people, not just Maya( not that her being the only alleged victim would mean she's lying). If Philip Schofield died, I would expect people to bring up the allegations. But I agree that's it's v bad to mention it in social media posts right after the person's passing. If people disapprove of the person, they should still respect their grieving family & friends.
