Thread 15 - TalkLair: “I Can't Lie To You About Your Chances, But... You Have My Sympathies.”

(Previous thread 14).

Autumn seems to have gone straight into winter. It's cold, wet and windy. In the TalkLair, the hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them). The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch though, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics.

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Glad it's all going well, @MouseMinge - eating, a glass of Prosecco and some weight gain sounds amazing. Modelling Indian clothes does too!

VictorianBigot · 22/10/2024 09:32

No, I'm a geologist, I had to help to launch and recover geophysical sensors and monitor incoming data.

@SinnerBoy Ooh interestinig! I'm on a GIS course at the moment and have just been working with geophysical data.

duc748 · 22/10/2024 16:56

Good to hear, Mouse. Absolutely glorious day here today, just had to get the eponymous 748 out, be rude not to. Getting pretty ancient now, but she still looks good from a distance! 😀

25 isn't ancient!

What sort of data? I'm using - or trying to use - side scan sonar. Wrong vessel, wrong towing geometry, wrong time of year and the water is too shallow. I've rejected everything so far...

duc748 · 22/10/2024 17:33

She's had a hard life! Most of them are kept in pampered heated garages.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 22/10/2024 17:46

That bike looks like a fine beast to me and certainly doesn't look neglected.

duc748 · 22/10/2024 17:58

Paint is peeling off the instrument cluster housing and engine casings, and the fairing panels have a fair few scratches and small cracks in them. Still goes fine, though, and that's the main thing.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 22/10/2024 18:18

Well it looks good in the photo and if you've had it for as long as you have, then you must get pleasure from riding it. I've only been on a motorbike a few times but they look wonderfully freeing.

Airborne electromagnetics but I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm enjoying the process of figuring it out though. Making pretty maps and visualising data is much more fun than statistical analysis.

I had to google side scan sonar, how interesting. Do you ever come across shipwrecks or other anomalies?

SinnerBoy · 22/10/2024 18:27

Loads of shipwrecks, all sorts of debris, loads of amphorae in the Adriatic and Black Sea. What are you using? Oasis Montaj?

duc748 · 22/10/2024 18:27

Yeah I do get an enormous amount of pleasure from riding it, Veg, but at this time of year, opportunities become very limited, and I'm just not prepared to put up with the cold and rain as I once was.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 22/10/2024 18:29

Don't blame you, duc, it would be a summer thing for me too.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 22/10/2024 18:30

Damn...I'm speechless with envy.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 22/10/2024 18:31

Wow! Did the amphorae end up there because of shipwrecks or were they tossed overboard when empty?

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 22/10/2024 18:38

Talking of ancient stuff, I was in Rome for a conference recently and stayed on for a little holiday. I went on an early morning tour of the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel and was blown away by the beauty that I saw.

The Church certainly leveraged its position to get the very best statues and mosaics that were dug up, plus commissioning the best artists and they continue to invite 'gifts' so are adding to their collection all the time.

And the Sistine Chapel was fantastic- the colours! I'd thought it would be heaving and we would be moved on quickly but the crowd wasn't horrendous & I could have sat for ages without being disturbed- as it was, I sat for 15 minutes, gazing.

Single ones, who knows? But I've come across piles of them in neat order, presumably, the galley had decayed, leaving the earthenware behind.

Nothing as sophisticated as that! I'm using QGIS and working with raster datasets.

Amphorae?! Wow! What @PoppySeedBagelRedux said. Where can I see images of stuff like this? I think I'm going to be going down a side scan sonar rabbit hole tonight Grin

VictorianBigot · 22/10/2024 18:47

Sounds very eerie.

Kucinghitam · 22/10/2024 19:20

I'm just WOW at shipwrecks and amphorae!

I can't find my really good one of a big pile of them, just two singles.

Oh, you can add more than one!

Rusty mine is Soviet, the rectangular one is a Soviet mine sinker - red dot lasers 30cm separation. The one in good condition is a German mine - all in the Baltic.
