Thread 15 - TalkLair: “I Can't Lie To You About Your Chances, But... You Have My Sympathies.”

(Previous thread 14).

Autumn seems to have gone straight into winter. It's cold, wet and windy. In the TalkLair, the hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them). The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch though, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics.

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

It's awful. I find it almost impossible to read posts cluttered with brightly coloured spots - and do like to be able to read back on my own posts in fast-moving discussions. I want an opt-out.

DeanElderberry · 18/12/2024 17:36

Sorry, I wrote that about and hour ago and it hadn't posted to I just pressed the blue button.

Mouse's mini Christmas tree isn't awful at all, it's wonderful - I still hope the precious decorations will turn up, but meanwhile a lovely tree and a kind and thoughtful friend are excellent things.

artant · 18/12/2024 19:17

I haven’t seen any of the reaction things in the wild yet but they keep popping up when I scroll (along with questions about reporting posts) which is getting annoying. It is better to have more choices than just thanks though.

Gonners · 18/12/2024 19:25

"Thanks" is a bit general, but does the job. Context usually clarifies whether you're thanking someone for info, help, support or just for making you laugh. What am I saying, "just" for making you laugh? That's the main reason I use it!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/12/2024 19:30

We're going to need thread 16 soon.

Given that the biscuit is such a tradition, that does seem a significant omission.

What does it mean? I once got tutted at, when I accidentally included one.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/12/2024 21:19

Exact meaning varies but it's somewhere between 'Yes dear', 'Are you fucking nuts?', and 'Parklife!'.

Gonners · 18/12/2024 21:27

Does "Parklife!" have a meaning in this (or any) context?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/12/2024 21:33

It's a response to someone being overly verbose - and usually pretentious. Based on the spoken bits in the Blur song of the same name (which aren't actually all that verbose or pretentious, really, but seemed so in a 90s popular beat combo context).

Gonners · 18/12/2024 21:47

Thanks, Bint. All I remember of that song is the title being shouted from time to time.

Britinme · 18/12/2024 22:05

I still have no idea what DFOD stands for but have a suspicion that it might be something like "do fuck off dear".

@MouseMinge your miniature tree sounds absolutely lovely, and how nice to be in touch with an old friend.

Thanks for the sympathy regarding DS1 folks. I honestly don't know whether he thinks long-term enough to connect not brushing his teeth adequately with getting cavities and gum disease. It has, of course, been explained to him many times, and all my children were taken regularly to the dentist when they were young enough to be at home. He does have a habit of ignoring consequences that would be obvious to most people though.

Right now, we went out for brunch today and then did some shopping, and on our way home he started to feel ill and threw up on the roadside, and then sprinted for the bathroom when we got in, so he's now in bed feeling grim. Whether he ought to have the extractions scheduled for tomorrow is anybody's guess, but I've left a message on the oral surgeon's answering machine and I guess we'll find out. It's an 8am appointment so they'd better check their voicemails early.

duc748 · 18/12/2024 23:43

I wondered about DFOD too! That sounds like a good shout, Brit.

Jeez, your son. That's horrible. Hopefully it's a consequence he won't ignore. Kids, eh?

SqueakyDinosaur · 19/12/2024 01:08

DFOD is indeed "do fuck off, dear".
