So the new leader of the tory party will be a woman that wants to cut maternity pay who loves the culture war rubbish and Robert who painted over a cartoon in an immigration centre. Who wants us out kf the echr because who need human rights lol
The conservative party is now like the reform party them two are very much to the right of the party
So with that choice I can't see tories getting back in in 5 years time. Most people are on the centre doesn't bother me as I loath tories but we do need an opposition

Well some say she's a Maggie for the 21st century, that would be enough to put me off but it's something many Tories will love. He's just more of the same.
Thankfully I don't think either of them could lead the Tories to victory.

@MoneyNeverSleeps yeah what japes, what a woman, how we laughed. Wonderful time to see your country collapse around you after years of neglect and some just want more of the same thing. Bet you’re moaning about changes to workers rights aren’t you too ?

Honestly? I agree with Starmer and Reeves’s comments - that it has to get worse before it gets better.

Yes, I’m good with that.

PermanentTemporary · 10/10/2024 19:01

I genuinely get some pleasure from seeing a Black woman doing well in politics - wish we saw more of that in Labour. And i dont intrinsically hate that she loves a fight - so does Angela Rayner - would be interesting if she ends up as Shadow Deputy PM so they are opposite each other. She has as I said come out with the odd thing I agree with over six years or whatever, but thats hugely outweighed by things I think are laughably extreme, naive or plain nasty. I think she is mainly for Kemi's rights.

This is the party that gave Britain Boris, Truss and Sunak. Tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if they put forward the tooth fairy and one of Santa’s reindeer, actually they might do better.

@TooBigForMyBoots Sadly, I think that this is the beginning of a new, far right resurgence. I hope I'm wrong.

I'm not too concerned about that.

They've irrevocably split the right wing electorate, ceding votes and seats to Reform UK. Now the Tory Party has moved even further to the Right, it will not be a vote winner for them.

On the contrary. Both candidates were too emeshed in the failed last government, both are unlikable and neither will lead them into the next election. The Conservative Party will continue to weaken over the next 5 years. Hence the groans that met yesterday's announcement from their own MPs.

I think Kemi was stitched up by headlines that didn't reflect what she meant re maternity pay. A friend of mine worked for a charity and had 6 months full pay, 6 months half pay, was pregnant by the time she went back and got the same again. I think it's these excessive packages in some public sector jobs that she was looking at rather than reducing SMP.

Hmmm, NHS here I believe the NHS gets back a thousand fold what it pays out in maternity pay. With generous packages you buy a lifetime's dedication and loyalty. Very few NHS workers don't return after maternity leave . With just SMP people have to learn to cut their cloth and the incentive just isn't there.

bombastix · 11/10/2024 07:43

You can already see this split happening in the Tory Party; lots of nasty headlines in the Telegraph this morning. Hands up I put my money on Jenrick to win because I thought they would go harder right. I also thought they would want to chum up to Reform and Kemi Badenoch was not well placed to do that. It seems I’m going to lose my money!

bombastix · 11/10/2024 08:26

Interesting @ilovesooty A lot of Badenoch’s backers are said to be the same people who backed Truss. Her cannonball style probably meets their needs for deregulation.

That said, Badenoch is a strange deregulator. As business secretary she could have done that by wiping out the majority of EU regulations transferred into UK law. She actually kept the majority.

Hunnymonster1 · 11/10/2024 09:31

What is it with politicians on the right that seem unhinged because the Republicans right now have got Marjorie Taylor green, who actually declared Biden, can control the weather like what the f we understand that's not bloody real, who the f thinks these people are telling the truth. I'm more worried about the crazies that vote for these lot

I don't know if anybody listened to l, b, c, but Robert jenrick was suggestion. That's the reason why he got rid of the murial cartoon pic. In the asylum, seeker place was because he believed that older people were pretending to be children even if that is true. Why would you get rid of a Disney Murial? Because there are still kids, there are in asylum, as we have seen, unfortunately drowned in the boats

The Guardian ran a hit-piece on Badenoch during the leadership campaign. About supposed bullying.

Now this.

One might almost think that Labour is pushing anti-Badenoch stories in its compliant house journal because they think she might do quite well against them.

(No, I am not suggesting that the Guardian is is more accommodating to Labour propaganda than the right-wing press is to the Tories. I am suggesting it’s no better.)

I heard about her being a bit of a bully quite a bit ago, actually, and I don't agree with you. I think labour are absolutely laughing. Because the person they actually feared was James Cleverly, because he was Moore Center at the end of the day. Elections are won by being on the centre

OP posts:
bombastix · 11/10/2024 10:03

I’m sure that is right @Rummly and I wouldn’t expect the Guardian to be pro Badenoch, but it’s not much of a hit piece if it only speaks to Guardian people! The association with Grenfell is a negative, but I assume for most Tory members they won’t care. No damage.

The real question is whether Badenoch would be popular with the general public.

Fairslice · 11/10/2024 10:08

I think the wider public are obsessed with immigration and blame illegal immigrants for all our woes. It's a particularly middle class mumsnet stance to say that even though our lives are about to be made hugely difficult financially because of the borrowing that RR is about to do, we should all welcome it because in 10 years we might get to see a GP on the same day. People don't give a shit about that. They are angry and it's easier to blame 'small boats'.

I don't think this by the way, but I am middle class and centre left.

bombastix · 11/10/2024 10:18

I think it’s immigration full stop, really. These riots we had are the real truth. People don’t like how the country is, they don’t want more immigration of any kind. We should stop thinking that we are uniquely tolerant. As we saw in the summer it unwinds very fast and doesn’t take much to get people to do get explicitly racist.

I saw a YouTube ‘short’ of Badenoch saying that the Tories should be focusing more on wider, bigger issues and less on smaller issues like immigration. I don’t know when that was from but I hope it was after the last two contenders were selected, so is up to date.

I also hope she means it and acts on it.

bombastix · 11/10/2024 11:38

@Rummly - I don’t doubt that the only way back for the Conservatives is to be more centre right and not entertain the Reform agenda. But this coalition they built under Johnson of the Red Wall has completely stuffed them in the last election because of immigration. And so presumably Badenoch must try to appeal to centre right people. But she is also quite alienating I think to wet Tories who are now saying “no vote”. They don’t like her.

It is just not obvious what the Tory Party is for. Perhaps she can do that successfully and give them a vision?

If we had a more equal society and not the large numbers in poverty, and we still had a level of social housing, I expect much of the anti-immigration sentiment would disappear.

I think Robert Jenrick could win, because there are enough Tory members who will not vote for a black person, even though they will never say so and give other reasons for supporting him.

bombastix · 11/10/2024 11:57

@LlynTegid - I note that Tory members chose Truss over Sunak. That really suggests very poor judgment and a group that is very right wing. Truss did not hide what she would do. They thought it was okay!

You have to wonder at their own assessment of a leader who would be good. Yes Truss told them they would get tax breaks. But no further thought than that. It was a very silly decision

anniegun · 11/10/2024 17:11

Badenoch's mask slips too often to be a credible leader. She suggested maternity pay was too high and then protested that it was the media's fault for reporting what she said. Jenrick has already proved himself to be happy to help donors dodge tax- a pure Tory.

ilovesooty · 11/10/2024 17:40

Ex MP Vicky Ford says Badenoch is "scandal free". Presumably hacking Harriet Harman's computer, and being implicated in accusations of bullying don't count.

MeJuly · 11/10/2024 17:49

Conservative party members chose Liz Truss. They are largely elderly and on the extreme end of conservative. Will they have the stomach for Kemi Badenoch?

What’s the hacking story?

How do “accusations” “implicate” somebody?
