Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

I saw that , wtf?

That feels like safeguarding issue and immediate removal of the child. 😞

Yes the lack of retrofitting and poor building standards from decades ago could well be a problem - like that Florida apartment block that collapsed a couple of years ago that killed almost 100 people.

A lot of homes are sub-standard. Maybe a lot of people in the UK don't have a grasp of the history and politics of the southern states, and genuinely don't realise the sheer level of poverty of many of the residents in that area.

Prescottdanni123 · 09/10/2024 19:01

People who aren't leaving have to write their name and DOB on them in permanent marker to help with body identification. Parents have to write it on their children. How can parents make the choice to stay? Stay and then write details on their children to aid recovery teams trying to identify the bodies, knowing full well they could have left and survived.

For those asking about the downgrading of Milton, it should be understood that although it has downgraded to a 4 it is still a very powerful storm:

Category 1 - 74-95mph winds
Category 2 - 96-110mph
Category 3 - 111-129mph
Category 4 - 130-156mph
Category 5 - 157mph+

Right now Milton is showing speeds of 126kt (according to Windy which is updating every 10 minutes). 126kt = 145mph so it is still horrendous.

Thank you for explaining the categories. How scary ☹️ utterly devastating

It’s awful. And 1000s still missing from Helene ☹️😔

Did anyone see the reporter on Sky news doing a piece to camera could hardly hear because of the wind and then a guy went past jogging in full running gear!!!

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 19:05

National weather centre has it downgrading again to a category three before making landfall. Fingers crossed

Great post, thank you. Is it true homes usually have sink hole insurance too?

It depends on the location. Not all areas of FL get sinkholes, but insurance is available for those who do. Unfortunately the Tampa area gets sinkholes.

Yikes, just watching a woman with a 3 year old choosing not to evacuate (ITV News) "God will provide"

Yes I saw that WTAF !

I feel sick…I have family out there not in an evacuation zone but a bit further south down the coast. They can’t evacuate easily (elderly, dementia) and the slow movement of the hurricane tracker south is scaring the shit out of me. It’s gone from Tampa to Sarasota and if it keeps up with that trend they’re going to be in trouble.

They have hurricane shutters etc but it’s going to be a long night.

Does anyone know if the evacuation zones are a dynamic thing - are they likely to change them now if the direction of the storm changes? I’m consoling myself that they haven’t actually been told to leave so maybe it will be ok…..but then it’s too late now anyway right, even if it’s direction shifts?

Evacuation zones are established by the state and the counties. They don't change with the storm, but what will happen is that different zones will be activated as the storm moves. Try googling the county name they live in and "evacuation zones." If they are in an evac zone call the local police on the regular line (again, google) and tell them the situation. They will get them out to a special needs shelter if they are not of sound mind.

I would hope that hospitals are built to withstand Cat 5 hurricanes and far enough inland to avoid a major storm surge.

I think relocating the hospital will have to be a serious consideration over the next decade as the huge storm surges get worse/more frequent. This was it last week and luckily the fence worked despite the comments ridiculing it,

Obviously I feel for the people there. That should go without saying!

This is a huge situation that is affecting people in many different ways.

We are all entitled to feel what we feel and I will not be shamed for being concerned about my holiday. If it was your holiday, you would be too, as much as you may pretend you wouldn't be!!

Such virtue signalling... and policing of what is deemed an acceptable concern, get over yourselves!!

So it's ok to worry for the 'kitties' of Florida but not be concerned for a very expensive and much looked forward to family holiday.

And to the poster that said at least we won't get school fines, you don't get fined in our school, it's independent so school fines were never a consideration thank you!

You're initial post was incredulous but god almighty this subsequent one is unbelievable

MILLYmo0se · 09/10/2024 19:20

@Imahosy I'm sure it's a wind up now. There's posters who are worried about family members with dementia but we should care about an expensive holiday

I'd like to think you're right but there's always one total outlier isn't there 😕

Would that offer protection in a massive storm surge though?

I guess we’ll find out. We used to really worry but we now have to let them make a risk assessment. I just wanted to explain it’s not lazy to not evacuate.

They can't move the hospital away from the people who need it, and Tampa General is the Level 1 Trauma center for that whole area of FL. My daughter trained there during medical school. The hospital is built to withstand cat 5 winds, but storm surge will be the issue, although they have put up barriers. The hospital administrators along with state officials will move patients to safety as needed. Earlier today they were evacuating nursing homes in the area.

My beloved FL does this very well.

People who say, "they shouldn't put this here, they shouldn't have that there" fail to understand that ALL of FL is subject to hurricane damage. There is no safe place. We put things where they need to be and mitigate as best as possible.

Octaviusoctober · 09/10/2024 19:34

How can I also building be hurricane proof I wonder?

What are the line man trucks for? And prisoners.. Do they get evacuated?

Beautifulweeds · 09/10/2024 19:35

CeruleanBelt · 08/10/2024 20:49

Poor people and disabled/elderly probably can't evacuate easily. Plus there's no petrol, and there are only 2 main highways and they're gridlocked. They can't get out. If you can't get out, you might feel safer in your home than in a car on the highway where you might get washed away. And where do you go?

I hope extra measures are put I place to help the vulnerable! People need to get OUT as it could be even worse than predicted. Just not worth it. Disgusting how gas prices and plane tickets have gone up, profiting from a disaster.

The line men go down to help restore power, they'll be sheltering away from the storm until it's safe for them to go in

Elseaknows · 09/10/2024 19:46

They don't evacuate prisoners, look what happened during katrina... prisoners drowned.

PetuniaT · 09/10/2024 20:01

GrowAndGreen · 08/10/2024 14:24

Should be called hurricane Exon-Mobil tbh. Looks fierce, climate scientists have been warning about this for years. Since the oceans have warmed so much more than was predicted, this is our new normal.

This is the most powerful hurricane in over 100 years! What does that tell you? Does it make Labour's £22b investment in carbon capture look worthwhile? When you look at a map of the two tiny locations in the north of England and then zoom out to a view of the whole earth to include the Americas, India and China only idiots like Ed Miliband believe he/we can defeat the forces of nature and the phenomenon of Climate Change which has been going on since the Earth was created 4.6billion years ago.

Elseaknows · 09/10/2024 19:46

4500 have been moved per BBC.

They just don't tell people when the prisoners are being moved to prevent them being targeted for prison breaks etc.

midgetastic · 09/10/2024 20:05

Climate change always goes on

Human induced climate change however is very new

Climate change is usually slow - this is changing exceptionally fast

We still
Could make it much much worse

And we probably will , could well end up killing off the human race because we are not clever enough to act

DontBiteTheCat · 09/10/2024 20:06

I really hope it is downgraded before hitting land, will that make a difference to the predicted storm surge?
