Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

@CassandraWebb I don't buy stuff mindlessly, thank you. But it is nigh on impossible to only buy UK made goods unless you have a huge disposable income.

I wasn't talking about you specifically. Obviously.

And buying less is the key. Consuming less. Using less fossil fuels and energy. It's basic stuff.

Our consumer behaviours drive companies profits, we aren't passive victims in this.

EasternStandard · 09/10/2024 13:25

I mean it’s demand too. Consumers drive that

I don't disagree, these things are heavily interlinked.

Genuine question. If I were on holiday and starting seeing the news 3 days ago, I'd have been on a plane out of there asap. Why on earth have people on holiday stayed? I honestly think people don't see the real danger here.

I can understand residents may be genuinely hoping it gets downgraded or swings past missing them, but you're on holiday. Pack your suitcase and go - surely? Go anywhere! Get a motel.

I know someone out there now at universal, disney etc. they've posted that people don't need to worry about them as it won't be bad there!

What on earth happens to people in hospitals?? Do they evacuate them?

Awful situation

I follow Dr Beach gem on FB, she's an emergency paediatrician whose home in St Pete has flooded a couple of times including last week. They usually evacuate to family but they all seem to be in the storms range so this time her children will stay with her in the hospital (they have a team that basically board in for the duration of the storms to care for patients that have to stay and to be ready for people arriving after storm has passed).

Yes it is the corporations, but a corporation exists to maximise profit. Does the real fault not lie with governments who fail to properly regulate the corporations?

‘It’s corporations/goverments fault that I buy cheap unnecessary crap from Temu that I then throw out to landfill’

MILLYmo0se · 09/10/2024 13:33

Did any see the flood barrier used at the hospital inFlorida in last weeks storm? Incredible piece of engineering

LongtailedTitmouse · 09/10/2024 13:34

Ooh. Hidden? That was a pretty uncontroversial post

Someone up thread provided me a link and I can see he is not in one of the red/yellow zones so evacuation not mandatory.

I think initially he didn't take it seriously and knowing him he thinks he is invincible. he has a generator and has hurricane experience so fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed he’s ok then if not in a red area. It must feel different if you live there and are used to hurricanes every sept / Oct and constantly told to evacuate

I follow her too. I can only imagine how she (and so many others affected) must have felt watching the water flood into her home the other week (via cameras). She reminded her followers that the water contains some nasty stuff, so everything is contaminated with sewage, chemicals etc, so there is a risk to health also. I hope the hospital isn’t greatly impacted.

Jsogs · 09/10/2024 13:40

@Zippedydodah There absolutely are enough shelter places for people. They use stadiums/schools etc. You just need to be out a bit inland and in a massive building to be safe. They are directing everyone in the evacuation zones to the appropriate shelters. They even have special needs shelters and ones that take pets.

Yes! Was called the aqua fence? Looked very interesting!

Downgraded to cat 4 again.

Jsogs · 09/10/2024 13:45

These storms are reallly tricky to predict especially where they will make landfall. People in Florida tend to wait until very close to the end as they've lived through loads of 'big' hurricanes that turned and all their area got was some wind and rain. Lots will have driven to stay with family and friends if they fear they will be without utilities for weeks on end which is a real possibly for those in the evacuation zones.

Thank god. Hopefully it loses more strength before hitting land

Overheater · 09/10/2024 13:47

I’m sorry if this comes across as insensitive, absolutely not my intention. I have friends and family living Tampa.

I was just looking at the Clearwater Hilton webcam - loads of the other beachfront hotels have the same. It got me thinking about whether these huge hotel brands evacuate their live in staff. Or if their staff are required to stay to monitor and minimise damage to the property. Basically, what’s the protocol?!

DeanElderberry · 09/10/2024 13:48

I just keep remembering the Surfside condominium collapse and hoping that was not typical of construction standards. Scary weather, without having to worry about building stability.

I just read that Katrina was a cat 3? How many cat 4/5 hurricanes have hit land before? Sorry if naive I don’t know just surprised Katrina was cat 3 (unless I misread)

very worrying. And people still deny climate change

Some people, anyway. I’m trying very, very hard not to hope that this bites the climate denier in chief, Trump, on his arse. Or at least in his pocket.
Who knows, he may even have an epiphany?

You're nicer than me. I was very disappointed to learn that Mar-a-Lago is not in Milton's path.

Overheater · 09/10/2024 13:52

Also. I’m watching sky and they’re interviewing a storm chaser travelling down there. Why are they giving this guy airtime? He’s putting his safety at risk, plus the lives of emergency services at risk.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 13:52

@Givemethesun Katrina was so deadly because the levees broke in New Orleans and flooded the area, not because of sheer wind speed etc., and because people were just left to die without any help.

justasking111 · 09/10/2024 13:53

My British friend bought a house in NYC she was adamant it had to be brick built. A lovely house on the Hudson. Until the Katrina hurricane and the surge of water which came up to the first floor. The house was ruined, insurance condemned completely, it was a pull down.

Three years they fought the insurers whilst renting a home.

CactusSnoop · 09/10/2024 13:54

I believe the devastation from Katrina wasn't because of the hurricane/wind itself, it was because the flood defences basically failed so they couldn't keep the water out.

I imagine they build relationships with them because it's cheaper to buy the storm footage from these enthusiasts than putting your own reporters at risk.

Very good point. Didn’t think of it that way.
