Couldn't see a thread for this in Weather.

This looks like it's going to be really bad. Helene has already caused enough devastion in the area and the poor people of Tampa are in for a lot more today.

Some people are refusing to evacuate from what I understand but the Mayor of Tampa has warned if you don't evacuate you die.

I can't imagine how scary it must be for them.

very worrying. And people still deny climate change

Some people, anyway. I’m trying very, very hard not to hope that this bites the climate denier in chief, Trump, on his arse. Or at least in his pocket.
Who knows, he may even have an epiphany?

No. He will find a way to use it to look heroic.

No doubt he's one of these that thinks these storms are caused by the democrats manipulating the weather

For god's sake, read the thread and realise I have responded

I'm a slow reader and it took me a long time to decide whether I was going to respond to you or not and I re-wrote it many times

Isn't that The Fault Of The Gays?

(reference to who was apparently to blame for Katrina by some US political quarters before anyone jumps on me.)

It’s frightening. This stuff is only going to get worse but we just refuse to accept it and change.

The problem is without China on board, it's actually meaningless. I've seen statistics over the years that show even if all developed countries suddenly went carbon neutral, the emissions released by China alone would be enough to tip us over the point of no return (which we're expected to reach around 2030 - so not long now).

Here's an old BBC article about China's emissions:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57018837

A security guard stands outside the cooling towers for a coal-powered power plant

Report: China emissions exceed all developed nations combined

The country is responsible for 27% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new report.

Watching the hurricane closely as have family in Naples and friends in Tampa. Neither have evacuated at present.

Nah, it'll be the trans - keep with the times!

midgetastic · 09/10/2024 13:06

We export our emissions to China though - if we stopped buying things from China and made them in the UK / country of sale, then China wouldn't look so bad

LongtailedTitmouse · 09/10/2024 12:59

A storm surge means the water rises like a tide coming in extra high, not as a sudden force like a big wave though there will be those on the coast too. Once the water reaches two foot the pressure on a building becomes dangerous, but if the water enters the building then it equalises that pressure on the walls (water inside applying equal force to the inside of the walls as that applied by the water outside) so collapse is unlikely. Hence for most buildings you don’t want to keep the water out beyond the first couple of feet.

Oh, okay. This makes more sense than what I had imagined. Thanks for that.

Especially if other countries go ‘carbon neutral’ by exporting production to China.

Good idea but people do like trade and politicians talking about tariffs well I’m guessing they are unpopular with some

Zippedydodah · 09/10/2024 13:13

My god daughter lives in Fort Myers, I just hope she’s ok 🙏
It’s all very well get told to evacuate but the roads get gridlocked very quickly, just where do you drive to and, assuming you get to wherever what next? You assume there’s shelter for thousands and thousands but there simply isn’t in reality.

Exactly. China produces tonnes of crap that people don't need. Then it gets shipped over here on huge polluting ships.

Buying less is hardly a huge sacrifice, and is good for your pocket as well as the planet

We can influence chinas emissions by not buying so much crap from there. They are also investing very heavily in green energy. It’s not ok to throw are hands up and wait. We have to transition away from oil. Peak oil was coming on the horizon anyway.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 13:22

The china point is a good one but we're not the devils for buying stuff. It's the corporations who choose profit over everything else.

Givemethesun · 09/10/2024 13:23

MrsMitford3 · 09/10/2024 09:20

My dad retired to Tampa- he initially thought he was far enough inland to avoid the surges etc but then on Monday he drove to around 6-7 petrol stations and none of them had petrol.
By that time he had used up most of his petrol and didn't have enough to look for more.
So he is stuck.
He has a generator and is planning on hunkering down. I feel sick with nerves.

This sounds awful. Why are there not local plans for peopel like your dad who have the bad luck of having no petrol? Do neighbours not take people who can’t get out themselves?

That's a very passive approach. Buying stuff mindlessly is just so unnecessary.

Corporations are there and operating because of consumer activity. Therefore we have huge power if we all pressure them.

itwasnevermine · 09/10/2024 13:24

@CassandraWebb I don't buy stuff mindlessly, thank you. But it is nigh on impossible to only buy UK made goods unless you have a huge disposable income.

Yes it is the corporations, but a corporation exists to maximise profit. Does the real fault not lie with governments who fail to properly regulate the corporations?

I mean it’s demand too. Consumers drive that

Someone up thread provided me a link and I can see he is not in one of the red/yellow zones so evacuation not mandatory.

I think initially he didn't take it seriously and knowing him he thinks he is invincible. he has a generator and has hurricane experience so fingers crossed.

Givemethesun · 09/10/2024 13:26

If people run out of fuel can they not squeeze in with someone else? If it’s life or death?
