Just seen something trending on twitter and im curious to know if non Muslims eat halal meat and if not, why?

I would and I do. The vast majority of takeaways and restaurants where I live serve halal meat. I have no issue eating it.

PolaroidPrincess · 05/10/2024 15:53

Was going to say the same. I've eaten it many times, often without realising. You'd be a bit stuck eating out or getting a takeaway around here if you didn't, unless you only ordered vegetarian dishes.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 05/10/2024 15:53

No.

I do in restaurants if that's the only option.

No for animal welfare reasons. It annoys me that it is often served without being labelled as such, meaning people are not given the choice.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 05/10/2024 16:06

I'm sure I read something saying that a lot (most?) of New Zealand lamb sold in uk supermarkets is halal.

Mjmum10 · 05/10/2024 16:11

I try not to, I don't think it should be the standard option anywhere. My high school did as a teenager and I stopped eating lunch (I'm 27 now and my mum complained to the school they agreed with her but nothing was done about it) I personally don't agree with it and think an animal should be killed as quickly as possible. Its also the principle of it for me, it's not a Muslim country so why the hell are you serving me halal meat? Cater for the majority not minority

Same here, most places serve it now don't they?

SwedishEdith · 05/10/2024 16:14

I thought most meat sold in supermarkets is halal. It's a purely pragmatic business decision. The animal still needs to be stunned before being killed.

BobbyBiscuits · 05/10/2024 16:14

I would and do. Some of my favourite restaurants are Pakistani/Bengali so all their meat is Halal. I used to use the Halal butchers when I lived in NW London as their lamb chops were much better than the ones in the British butchers. If killing animals for food is cruel, then having a prayer read out over a tannoy while it's happening doesn't make it any better or worse. If I found it that unpalatable then I wouldn't eat or use animal products.

Octavia64 · 05/10/2024 16:14

I don't eat meat so no.

Bjorkdidit · 05/10/2024 16:14

Do you mean 'proper' halal meat that's only available from specialist butchers and easy to avoid if you want to or mass market halal meat that's produced and killed in exactly the same way as non halal meat except accompanied by a recorded prayer and is sold in general takeaways etc?

Crinkle77 · 05/10/2024 16:32

Yep I would. Most of it is stunned before being killed. And as the PP said there's a vast difference between the mass market halal and the stuff sold in specialist butchers. But to be honest any slaughter is cruel really. I do eat meat and try to ensure the meat I buy is British and high quality so I know it's had a good life. That's more important to me.

Show your ignorance why don't you. Halal meat means the animal must be killed as quickly as possible. That's why strict halal eaters are against stunning before slaughter, because it can render the animal half dead and it prolongs the dying process.

ThisHangryPinkBalonz · 05/10/2024 16:37

I dont go out of my way to buy it but most people can't escape it, it's used in lots of takeaways etc. So not sure why people act like it's the end of the world.

SherryBaby11 · 05/10/2024 16:40

I don't eat any meat. The argument from those who do, that halal meat is cruel, baffles me. The meat industry is cruel, regardless of what music they may play in the background. We'll never evolve as a species until a stop is put to it. If you're not okay with being part of a barbaric industry, don't eat meat.

Religiously slaughtered meat is no worse than other meat, It's all the flesh of a tortured animal who was killed terrified, in pain and prematurely. Blaming the religion is bizarre.

Comedycook · 05/10/2024 16:41

Yes, it doesn't bother me at all. I'm sure loads of restaurants and/or takeaways use halal meat, I've probably eaten in many times and had no idea.

Twinklewonderkins · 05/10/2024 16:41

Yes it’s routinely sold in most takeaways/restaurants where I live.
Out of interest, those who don’t eat it due to welfare concerns, is all the meat you eat higher welfare meat?

ThatOpenSwan · 05/10/2024 16:42

Yes of course.

I'd hate to think what conditions most takeaway meat experienced. Nevertheless it doesnt stop most people eating a dirty doner or a some rubbery chicken.

Turkey ham fuhgetaboutid.

StarSlinger · 05/10/2024 16:48

Yes. Most of the takeaways in my area are Halal.
