I remembered the trick of putting a bottle cap into the soap

My friend gave me a nice bar of soap from a farmers' market. Lovely, but it was getting a bit soggy in the soap dish, and I remembered my Granny's trick of pushing a beer bottle cap into the soap. You stand the soap on the bottle cap and it's a little platform so the soap dries. Brilliant.

That's a brilliant idea, I will do this!

Orchidflower1 · 05/10/2024 05:55

Does it not scratch your hand as you roll the soap? Have I imagined this incorrectly?

I imagine the sharp edges are embedded in the soap itself leaving only the smooth surface of the bottle top(not something I’ve done so may be completely wrong)

Hooray @Irridescantshimmmer . I am happy to pass it on!

No, it doesn't scratch. You push the sharp, frilly bit of the cap into the soap so your hand touches the smooth top of the bottle cap.

You are completely correct @Itsamumslife2024

(edit because I said the wrong name!)

Clever!

Or you could use a soap dish...

I was in my 40s before realising that’s the purpose of the little hard label on a bar of Imperial Leather soap 🙈

Autumnweddingguest · 05/10/2024 06:35

I have a really expensive soap that smells divine which a friend gave me last Christmas. It gets so soggy. I'm going to try the bottle top advice, even if it sounds like a tip from Viz! Grin

No! I had no idea.

Yes but the soap dish gets all gloopy and slimy. I use Kenneth Williams' trick of balancing the soap on an upturned nail brush for lesser soaps, but the pretty soap my friend gave me came with its own soap dish and it seems such a waste when all the expensive gloop gathers in the beautiful dish.

Good tip!

I wish they still had those magnets in bathrooms to pop the soap on, genius invention but I’ve only seen them on bathrooms that are probably 30+ years old

I have wondered, with the rise of shampoo bars etc, why there haven't made a comeback. They were such a good idea.

helleborus · 05/10/2024 07:19

Just done a quick google and there's quite a selection of magnetic soap holders available. I might get one, the one my grandparents had in the 70s was brilliant.
Thanks for starting this thread OP. I have also been fed up of soggy soap dishes 😁

Well I never knew that and I'm late 50's.
Thank you 😘

How does this work? Do you push a magnet into your soap?

Yes, there used to be an advert on TV saying that "Imperial Leather always rests on its name" i.e. the little hard label with the Imperial Leather name and logo on it.
Seemed the height of sophistication at the time....

Royalshyness · 05/10/2024 07:26

I was in an old church recently with a bathroom and saw this (two weeks ago) for the first time and I thought what a clever idea !

Yes there was a little disc that went into the bar of soap. Think the actual magnet was on the wall mounted holder and you just held the soap up to the holder and they stuck together.

Mum and I never knew that, and the label was always torn off before use in our house!

These days I just have a soap dish that's stuck to the mirror with suction cups, so a fair way clear of the basin. It's easy to take it down to clean and the soap doesn't get mucky.

I was today old reading your comment when I realised.

That's today's earworm sorted: 'My only comfort in liiiiiffffee!' Smile

Chasingsquirrels · 05/10/2024 07:53

A bar of Imperial Leather has appeared (DS) in our main bathroom.
Everything I use it I put it face down but everything I go in there it is face up.

That's what OP is using , it's getting soggy in the soap dish.
