I remembered the trick of putting a bottle cap into the soap

My friend gave me a nice bar of soap from a farmers' market. Lovely, but it was getting a bit soggy in the soap dish, and I remembered my Granny's trick of pushing a beer bottle cap into the soap. You stand the soap on the bottle cap and it's a little platform so the soap dries. Brilliant.

You need a better draining soap dish. It's sitting in standing water that makes it soggy.

I was in my 40s before realising that’s the purpose of the little hard label on a bar of Imperial Leather soap 🙈

I hate that label on imperial leather. Always gets soggy and disgusting. My mum buys it and I can't bear to use it

Onagoldenautumnday · 05/10/2024 08:43

O.M.G. saveforthat no sooner seen than ordered!
I'm constantly trying to find ways to stop soap being soggy.
A lot depends on the soap and compliance of other users.
I've always known about Imperial Leather resting on its name.
But like another poster, others couldn't care less.

i think you'd have be strong to push the cap into the soap?

I can’t see how, just put your weight on it,

ghostbusters · 05/10/2024 08:51

I've got one of these soap dishes and it's brilliant. Got it from eBay.
The bottle cap sounds good but I assume you waste some soap when it's finished at it'll all be stuck in the cap?

You could put in when the soap is a bit soggy?

Thanks OP I've never hear of this before. We used to have a weird suction thing but that used to get soggy too.

DysmalRadius · 05/10/2024 08:55

We have a magnetic soap holder like this.
No soggy soap and it doesn't slide into the sink all the time.

Good tip!

I wish they still had those magnets in bathrooms to pop the soap on, genius invention but I’ve only seen them on bathrooms that are probably 30+ years old

We have them! And our bathrooms are modern. You can get them on Amazon amzn.eu/d/3NMyjTH.

I have wondered, with the rise of shampoo bars etc, why there haven't made a comeback. They were such a good idea.

They definitely are starting to a bit, Smol sell them for their soaps (and you can get cheaper versions on Amazon). They suction to the wall so you don't have to drill your tiles like the old days. Great for us as our wash basin is a weird shape and soap dishes won't stay put on the side

forgot to attach the quote... I'll do it again

That isn't true - they said it in a TV advert (Paul Merton, I think!) but when you get a bar of Imperial Leather the label is recessed, it takes some time before it is becomes proud of the soap.

Should I have posted this in Pedants Corner?

Cheeesus · 05/10/2024 10:32

But what happens to the bottle top near the end of the bar? I use it down to nothing.

You need a soap dish that is hardly there eg

They do! I've got one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen.

GameofPhones · 05/10/2024 11:15

I use an upturned nailbrush or kitchen sponge (green scourer side down). Saves space, and the support has a dual use in the bathroom.

countrygirl99 · 05/10/2024 11:33

I use a big clam shell with pretty stones to rest the soap on.

ouch321 · 05/10/2024 11:35

Dislike bar soap. Goes all funky on one side and then dry and cracked on the other. Never looks appealing.

I'm team handwash.

I use a folded flannel, but I remember the magnetic holders with great fondness, I'll now be checking out what's available these days!

Mosaic123 · 05/10/2024 11:50

My grandma taught me to keep a bar of very special soap in my underwear drawer to scent it. Unwrapped of course. That's what I do with soaps that are too nice to use.

Apart from that I use hand wash as it's less messy.

We have these! Straight off amazon about 5 years ago.

What? You mean the label has to face down?

ChocoChocoLatte · 05/10/2024 13:08

@Packingboxesneeded I am today years old 🤦🏼‍♀️

halava · 05/10/2024 15:06

I use the "no touch" hand gel bottles. Brilliant, I love them.

I'm afraid I don't like soap bars despite having bought lots of Marseilles soap in France recently why I don't know! Christmas stocking fillers
