I remembered the trick of putting a bottle cap into the soap

My friend gave me a nice bar of soap from a farmers' market. Lovely, but it was getting a bit soggy in the soap dish, and I remembered my Granny's trick of pushing a beer bottle cap into the soap. You stand the soap on the bottle cap and it's a little platform so the soap dries. Brilliant.

How does this work? Do you push a magnet into your soap?

My grandparents had one and it was only when I was about 13 that I realised they didn’t buy special magnetic soap…

OMG that is brilliant. I love solid soap & this drives me mental. Thank you!

I'm A hand wash girl after a couple stayed years ago and left pubes on the soap

It got binned

I know it prob was always squished against her muff for many befire stays ans I used the soap

but seeing evidence was a bit too much !!!

Or possibly dragged across his ball sac

Either way. Too much for me to deal with 😂

So I pump and go now

I just use Dove beauty bar.

I think it’s better for the skin and the curved shape lets air under so it dries. If you cup it in your hand and rub the inward curve against your body when you use it ( which works well anyway) it retains this shape right until the last couple of uses.

Is everyone buying crap soap dishes that don't t drain? If you have a decent soap dish it doesn’t go gloopy.

I have one like this. The excess water drains off into the bottom and you empty it out every so often. The soap doesn’t sit in the water.

Mine is this design.

We switched to soap bars a few years ago to reduce plastic consumption and bought soap dishes like this. They drain water into the sink very well and the soap doesn't go all mushy.

Ah and that also perfectly illustrates the dove design. If you make sure you don’t thump it down in a great puddle of water, that’s a sufficient curve for the bar to dry out.

My Aldi soap bars go flat after a bit of use, but it's easy to take the tray down and rinse any soap scum off it.

Oh. My friend had one of these at her work like 25yrs ago or so

It felt wrong using /rubbing it as felt like was wanking a Willy

But we all did use it 😂😂😂

Yes but the soap dish gets all gloopy and slimy. I use Kenneth Williams' trick of balancing the soap on an upturned nail brush for lesser soaps, but the pretty soap my friend gave me came with its own soap dish and it seems such a waste when all the expensive gloop gathers in the beautiful dish.

But a specifically designed soap dish has ridges, which solves this problem.
I almost bought one in Sainsburys the other day, think it was £2-50

Yes there was a little disc that went into the bar of soap. Think the actual magnet was on the wall mounted holder and you just held the soap up to the holder and they stuck together.

Yes! It was like a metal bottle top (haha)! We had one of those magnet soap holders in our old house.

Lovely13 · 06/10/2024 19:56

I bought, from Lakeland, soapholders that slope slightly and have a lip to drain excess water. Works pretty well.

This one doesn't.

Sanguinello · 06/10/2024 21:53

I've got this type that lets air get to it and lets it drain

The fake grass soap dishes from Tiger on Oxford Street are the best at keeping soap ungloopy.

Good tip!

I wish they still had those magnets in bathrooms to pop the soap on, genius invention but I’ve only seen them on bathrooms that are probably 30+ years old

Does it not scratch your hand as you roll the soap? Have I imagined this incorrectly?

Other way around... rough part pushed into soap

catmum44 · 08/10/2024 11:12

Upside down nail brush, soap on the bristles.

I was in my 40s before realising that’s the purpose of the little hard label on a bar of Imperial Leather soap 🙈

I have reached 63 and learnt that today!
So thank you!
