I remembered the trick of putting a bottle cap into the soap

My friend gave me a nice bar of soap from a farmers' market. Lovely, but it was getting a bit soggy in the soap dish, and I remembered my Granny's trick of pushing a beer bottle cap into the soap. You stand the soap on the bottle cap and it's a little platform so the soap dries. Brilliant.

Or you could use a soap dish...

Soap dishes can be worse than useless in this respect.

We have a magnetic soap holder each in the shower - DH uses special coal tar soap bars for psoriasis, and I prefer pure soap for certain areas of my body because it feels cleaner. Shower gel leaves a bit of a slimy residue, imo.

The little magnet you push into the soap that comes with the holder went rusty really quickly so I just use a fresh beer bottle cap for every new bar, it sticks to the magnet fine. It's easy to push in, soap is surprisingly soft! I like the big bars of Pears soap.

I was in my 40s before realising that’s the purpose of the little hard label on a bar of Imperial Leather soap 🙈

Golly. You live and learn. I'm almost 60 and had no idea!

SplendidUtterly · 05/10/2024 15:39

Thanks for the tip!

@GameofPhones
I use an upturned nailbrush or kitchen sponge (green scourer side down). Saves space, and the support has a dual use in the bathroom.
I do this , but I , probably unwisely fancy something different.

That is genius op!

My DMIL used to do that and have a magnet on the wall to attach it to.

Umm yeah but it still gets gloopy…

Here in France a friend makes fabulous cold process soap and she sells little suction cups with magnetic tops for use with her soap. A local brewery supply the bottle caps to stick in the soaps. Brilliant, works like a charm.

Good tip!

I wish they still had those magnets in bathrooms to pop the soap on, genius invention but I’ve only seen them on bathrooms that are probably 30+ years old

Have a look on Amazon - they've got several on there.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 05/10/2024 22:20

Keep a stash of unwrapped soap in your cupboards to “harden off”. Makes the cupboard smell nice and makes the soap less slimy.

ProvincialLady2024 · 05/10/2024 22:25

This is so clever!

My Gma was on the front line in WW2 and was so thrifty! She always welded the slivers of old soap to a new bar.

I was definitely not alive in WW2, and I still do that.

@Packingboxesneeded i've just found out now from you and im nearly 50! 🤣

Is everyone buying crap soap dishes that don't t drain? If you have a decent soap dish it doesn’t go gloopy.

I have one like this. The excess water drains off into the bottom and you empty it out every so often. The soap doesn’t sit in the water.

Slim™ Compact Soap Dish - Light grey | Joseph Joseph

This clever soap dish has a unique, sloping design that saves space and allows any excess water or suds from your soap to neatly drain away.

These are brilliant. My hairdresser has one in the salon loo. I never think to ask her where she got it from though.

PatsyPatsysaid · 06/10/2024 09:15

My nan had this - but it was part of a magnetic soap holder. You push the cap into the soap and then hang it upside down attached to the magnet thing. Never soggy soap

DanielaDressen · 05/10/2024 07:29

Yes there was a little disc that went into the bar of soap. Think the actual magnet was on the wall mounted holder and you just held the soap up to the holder and they stuck together.

Edited

I have never heard of or seen this before. Amazing!

How? I bought one of those nets that you put slivers of old soap in. It's just a soggy mess that isn't pleasant to use.

SoupDragon · 06/10/2024 09:23

We did this when I was a child. What I remember is manky bottle tops as the soap wore down. Possibly rusty too.

You put the sliver on top and press. It's not difficult! As you use the soap is becomes joined more firmly.

That does sound manky.
When I start a new bar I wash as normal, then don't rinse the bar off and press the old piece onto the flatter side of the new bar and leave them to dry.
Seems to weld pretty effectively.

I was just going to mention those!

WetBandits · 06/10/2024 09:28

I’ve had a strong aversion to bar soap for as long as I can remember, triggered by seeing pubes stuck to a bar when I visited someone’s house Envy

If, for some crazy reason, I end up a bar soap person, I’ll be doing this Grin
