Johnson is sorry about his apology

https://x.com/AdamBienkov/status/1842234214076268907

But will he express regret for being sorry about his apology?

BestIsWest · 04/10/2024 21:42

The 20mph is not a problem at all anywhere near me. You don’t hear much about it now either and apparently the statistics on RTAs are looking good for the first few months.

PickAChew · 04/10/2024 21:43

My troublesome eye is itching in sympathy, @cardibach

Is it just in villages and towns!? I have no idea about this, I have only heard about it

It’s at the various councils’ discretion - it just means they don’t have to apply to go as far down as 20. It’s generally where pedestrians and traffic interact. Some rural councils just made every 30 zone a 20 one, which doesn’t always work. There’s more of a variety of 20/30/40/50 in the more urban counties. For example, you can (bi know because I have done it) drive from the bridge into Wales to the heart of Mumbles (far side of Swansea) before you hit a 20mph zone.

Zonder · 05/10/2024 00:11

Was this Johnson interview planned before the LK one got cancelled? Why is he suddenly popping up?

Time for an unpopular opinion, forgive me……..I don’t find the 20mph limits in Wales a problem. I mean, I don’t live there but when we visit I can see the justification for them in 99% of the places they are situated. But on English social media they are apparently the Devil incarnate and Labour will make us all do them, all the time, in all the places Hmm

Most of the furore about the 20mph speed limit was started by the Welsh Conservatives for no reason other than to have a go at Labour-run Wales.

I live in rural north Wales and on the whole it really isn't a problem. Yes, I think some sections need to be reviewed and hopefully this will be done in time. I heard a lot of moaning about it to start with but most of it seemed to come from English tourists who swore never to return because it was so 'dreadful'.

The Welsh Cons would never miss an opportunity to have a go at the Welsh government. Thankfully they are now extinct here in terms of MPs and hopefully the same will happen at the Senedd elections.

Willowkins · 05/10/2024 01:40

They introduced 20 mph in London a while ago and of course there were complaints. My experience is that the average speed hasn't changed but it's a much smoother ride because there's less stop start. I assume that helps reduce pollution as well.
I do realise Wales is completely different to London.

I don't have a problem with them either, plenty here is southern England.

The problem was always trying to stick to below 20 in an old manual car. I did but my car would want accelerate in 2nd gear to above 20.

Now I have a new automatic with cruise control it's a breeze!!!!

grannycake · 05/10/2024 07:09

I'm Welsh and a huge supporter of the 20 mph limit. (My son was hit be a car when he was 9 and recovered because the car was travelling slowly)

I haven't noticed any difference in journey times since it was introduced but the traffic noise outside my house has lessened

Sadly they did a good job of having a go. I almost thought the 20mph was everywhere in Wales, which is why I had to clarify!

DH complained about ours (that he rarely drives through, anyway) for the same reason and because even if he obeyed it, other people would drive up his backside. I walk up there or catch a bus through it far more than he drives there and people generally obey it, helped by the whacking great speed bumps that were installed. The council also had to install bollards all along the footpaths to stop lazy twats from parking right across them while they buy their lunch. That saves me a lot of time in taking a photo, wishing the twat a good day when he gives me a mouthful of abuse and submitting it to the council's "report parking like a twat" page.

Zonder he's got a 'memoir' to flog. Serialised in a daily rag nearby. So far he's lost the BBC due to Kuensberg 'ooh, sorry', and Sky because Beth Rigsby won't play his game and agree his conditions. He may outsell Truss's effort.

pointythings · 05/10/2024 09:09

I'm completely unbothered by the 20 mph limits and I wish we had them in our townm especially on my street. It's used as a rat run for people avoiding one modest set of traffic lights and people tear down it at way more than 30 - a few killer speed bumps, a reduced limit and a swathe of fat tickets would really help.

We’ve got a 20 limit where I live. Guess what? Nobody pays a blind bit of notice of it and it’s not policed. It’s completely pointless.

I thought the Covid inquiry established that he couldn’t remember anything. Is it 200 pages of, I don’t know… I can’t remember…I can’t recall?

newnamethanks · 05/10/2024 10:19

Hmm. Can't help you out there rafa, my WhatsApps concerning that have unaccountably disappeared.

So Boris Johnson will retake the Tory party with a referendum on the ECHR. Then UEFA. Then Eurovision. Then Eurosport.

And a fair take on Jonathan Gullis' plight

This looks like they are just reinstating what the Tories scrapped. I'm very pleased to see it 💪

PandoraSox · 05/10/2024 16:17

That is excellent news about worker's rights.

Awaiting the frothing from the Steamers on MN, saying they'll have to let all their staff go etc.

To be fair if they did nothing but counter whatever the Tories have done I'd be happy.
