I thought changing paintings was Nasty Bob's job?

Well he did have a hissy fit about, it suggesting Labour dislike our history

Guess it's easy to forget what you were part of the government that planned it.

On the contrary, I have seen lots of coverage of the £63bn.

However, a lot of the coverage points out that far from it being "new" investment, a large proportion of it was actually announced before the GE.

Add to that the fact that a lot of the investment is for new wind farms, which are heavily subsidised by the government, and you have to wonder how much net "new investment" there actually is.

Link to the “lots of coverage”, please. There’s nothing in the Times or the Telegraph.

I've seen 2 posts whinging about the weight loss jabs already

Why? You would have to be seriously odd to say yes I have a strong preference for obesity and no work instead. I totally support Wes Streeting. Being too sick to work is one thing; if there is a treatment you can receive that will help, you are bound to take it. If you don’t, but claim you cannot work in consequence then that is not reasonable.

SerendipityJane · 15/10/2024 10:18

Let the media froth at molehills. It makes it a thousand times easier to sneak the real blockbuster legislation through, as to criticise that requires some knowledge of the subject. Which we know the MSM consumers are far too busy for.

(I have actually heard someone say "I don't have time for facts" as they bang on about a headline that is utter bollocks).

Labour has committed to banning fire and rehire.

Legislation that Reform or the Consservative party will almost certainly oppose and wissh to over turn or weaken at a later stage.

So if Labour voters do switch to Reform on the basis of the £1bn investment DP World then I can only think fire and rehire isn't all that far up their list of priorities.

If labour voters switch to Reform we can only guess that they don’t understand what Reform stands for. Certainly not decently funded services/NHS and adequate workers rights. Bit deja vu a la Brexit.

People on benefits or low incomes getting free stuff. MN perennial. Also obese people. It’s important for some MNers to feel morally superior.

I think the LibDems are the ones to watch. Being centrist has done them no harm. Something I suspect a lot of Tory MPs have noticed.

If all the MPs that don't support either candidate are more serious about their career than their rosette, they could do a lot worse than join the LibDems. Possibly making the Libdems (and themselves !!!) the official opposition.

The whole "you have to commit to leaving the ECHR" idea of Jenricks would be the clear blue water they needed. After all, no one signed up for that.

As for the JRM situation - he has repeatedly pulled his breeches down and invite Farage to have his way with his unworthy body. So Jenrick pinning him down as Tory chairman fits that particular metaphor. The fact it completely ignores Farages stated aim of destroying the Tory party forever will be a discussion note in the UK history taught in the 2200s ....

Counted 4 threads already and it's only 11am - expect there will be more - it's like catnip for the MN demographic

So well put! You gave me a good laugh thanks.

Anyone seen the economy/jobs market thread? Not sure whether to laugh or cry at that one…

Yes, I saw that one too. Resisting the urge to post on it.

You were doing great work trying to point out facts.

There’s one about the economy now as a change from weight loss injections.

There is an image I didn't need in my head. 🤮

There are two ways to deal with the remaining rabble currently describing itself as Conservatives. Either ignore it or laugh at it. To attempt a reasoned discussion where no reason exists is simply titillating them.

Bit of fun,

Want to get an idea how difficult it is to be Rachel Reeves in setting a UK Budget...

The government has added Veteran Cards to the list of accepted voter ID.

Hopefully more will be added for young people too

OP posts:
bombastix · 15/10/2024 17:46

They should scrap the requirement- it was only done to put off the young from exercising their right in person. Postal voters I might have understood more- the capacity for fraud is far greater

PickAChew · 15/10/2024 17:57

I would find cable recycling facilities pretty useful. They soon get damaged when you use them out and about.

Yes this was interesting- I invested a lot and broke the current fiscal rules as a result. But given Rachel Reeves is about to do that anyway in reclassifying public investment in infrastructure as not debt then I felt okay about it!

itsgettingweird · 15/10/2024 19:48

wouldn't it be fab if the press got behind the UK ?

Absolutely.

It's quite depressing all this glass half full attitude.

Not one government is perfect. But when there is success it needs to be focussed on rather than the negative non headlines.

Tbf it is like that when it's the other way around. If the Tory's had made another fuck up the TS story would have been used as a "isn't our PM great for protecting her after the terrorism scare".

It's not the stories as such but the absolute non attempt to even cover up the bias now.

DuncinToffee · 15/10/2024 19:49

Oh FFS what is this MSM obsession with Taylor Swift tickets

It's getting beyond ridiculous now.

Do they realise how much money the concerts contributed to the economy and how much she has donated to foodbanks.
