Would you find this odd- nephew wondered around at night

Bit random but my nephew is staying with us for a few weeks as his student house not yet ready. He’s in our loft bedroom at the moment.

We had our youngest daughter in with us the other night and she was pretty restless with a virus so I was awake a lot. I’m pretty sure at 1am or so I heard my nephew come down from loft room and stand on the landing and yawn wait for a bit and then I think go upstairs again?!

I asked him next morning if he got up in the night and said it was really late he seemed to know what I was talking about but said I must have heard him go to bed or that he was going down for his phone. But it wasn’t that as I didn’t hear the stair gate opening at all from the ground floor to the landing and it’s really noisy so I definitely would. He didn’t come down to use the loo as there’s an en suite in the loft room. I asked him if he’s a sleepwalker but he said no. So I guess he was just standing outside our doors?!

Since he’s been fine. I have three daughters 6,3 and 1. They all love spending time with him and always have. (He’s my brothers son and there’s a big age gap between me and my brother).

I don’t know if it’s strange and I’m right to be a bit freaked out or if it’s an over reaction?!
My husband didn’t hear anything and thinks I’m a bit crazy.

Should I be a bit wary or get over it? My nephew is a kind and lovely young man in general!

Teens do really weird walking around in the night. I think it started in lockdown and has continued. In the olden days we went to bed and slept all night. Don't be surprised if Deliveroo arrives at 11pm or pancakes are fried at 4am. It is the modern way, apparently.

Lking6795 · 29/09/2024 17:52

Well mine aren’t teenagers so wouldn’t know! Just did lots of at home sing and sign with them in lockdown.
Maybe he was on his phone and got distracted and went back up, just weird he wouldn’t say that then!? I’ve never heard him before and he’s been here a few weeks now he normally goes up about 11 and down at 7-8 ish.
Anyway its only until October half term but seemed a bit odd!

I wander around at night and I'm not a teenager. I often wake after a couple of hours and I'm stiff/back hurts. I get up. Go downstairs. Maybe get a glass of milk.

I'm not sure that he's odd. If you are unable to sleep being trapped in one room and not leaving it would feel odd to me.

What exactly are you insinuating?

Stichintime · 29/09/2024 18:00

Probably stepped over the gate, knowing it was noisy when opened.

Just as a fun fact, in the older old days, people would go to bed, sleep for a while, then get up for an hour at about 3am, then go back to sleep again. Maybe he's a medieval peasant reborn!

He got up, started going down stairs, changed his mind and went back to his room. Maybe someone texted him, maybe he decided he wasn’t hungry, maybe he decided it would make too much noise or he didn’t want to raid your fridge as he’s a guest. Teenagers are weird! 😂

The gate is right on the stairs if he’s stepped over it I’d have definitely heard him it’s about a 1 metre drop that other side onto the first stair!

He wasn’t wondering around per se just standing on the landing for 10 minutes yawning?! The landing light wasn’t on ano he was standing basically in complete darkness!
Obviously wouldn’t think it was odd if I’d heard him go downstairs and get a drink etc or something!

Glad you all think I’m crazy though I was just a bit “why is he standing there in the dark yawning” but maybe that’s normal teenage behaviour and I have it to come!

Ciukd he have been looking at his phone during this time?

Boidont · 29/09/2024 18:12

Maybe he forgot where he was? Two days ago I woke up and started to leave the room, unfortunately for some reason I was remembering my childhood bedroom and actually just walked into the wall

Skipsurvey · 29/09/2024 18:15

I'm so glad you said this! The other night I woke up and thought I was in a completely different house entirely - had to put a hand on the wall and follow it round to find the door; I was thinking it was just me and I was going mad!

I think if he was audibly yawning he wasn’t being sneaky.

Im not sure it’s anything to worry about. Has it happened just the once?

It was audible because I was awake it wasn’t a yawn that would wake me up, so if it’s happened before I wouldn’t know if I was asleep!

I don’t think he was on his phone on the landing because when I asked him why he was on the landing in the dark he said he might have been getting his phone? I assume he wouldn’t have said that if he’s been standing there on his phone?

I mean he’s pretty vague in general though but his explanations didn’t make sense either way given the massively creaky stair gate to the ground floor wasn’t opened so I know he didn’t go downstairs.

like I say a bit of a mystery!

Yes maybe but he has to leave his room and come round and down a flight of stairs from the loft so I’d have thought the thinking process to navigate the stairs he’d have realised where he was… and if he realised on the landing why did he stand there for 10 minutes…

it sounds like I’m thinking about this a lot but I’m not really. He’s been at his girlfriends this weekend so I think now
he’s back I’m just wondering if he’ll do it again tonight 😂😂.

Maybe it wasn’t him maybe it was a ghost!

Not really insinuating anything as not sure what to make of it but
will always be vigilant as I can about safe guarding my girls because of the world we live in…
And recently read a new article about that Netflix show where two teenage brothers randomly killed their parents (Monster) so maybe it’s just me having read that recently that got me a bit freaked out about a young lad standing outside our bedroom doors at 1am when we’re normally all asleep!

Jesus Christ, is he in a prison? Why can't he leave his bed?

I have 3 teens and they're up and down all night.

How bizarre

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/09/2024 18:33

I do that, not at night though, but in the office.

I wander about a bit yawning, looking at what other people are doing, might engage in a bit of chat, yawn again, look out of the window (it's during the day) maybe sigh this time. Wander about a bit more. Yawn. Go back to my desk and doze off a bit.
And here's the funny thing I'm NOT a civil servant!

Skipsurvey · 29/09/2024 18:34

how odd that you have doubts about your nephew and that you have to post on here?

Yeah sure but this is why I think I’m going crazy because he wasn’t up and down he was just standing there in the dark!

Tbf though I have heard teenagers are a strange bunch so might just not be used to it.

thanks all!

A yawning ghost 👻!

Could it have been one of your children?

Blanketpolicy · 29/09/2024 18:37

Ds was prone to sleepwalking for a few years and would only remember snippets the next morning. He would get up at 3am and be wandering around with just a towel around his waist looking for the shower, sometimes coming into our room. I'd ask him what he was doing and he'd go back to bed and not remember anything the next day.

He hasn't done it for a while now but he is a usual nocturnal young adult and goes downstairs for water, food, etc regularly. I don't mind as long as he is quiet and doesn't set off the fire alarm again at 2am!!!!
