Would you find this odd- nephew wondered around at night

Bit random but my nephew is staying with us for a few weeks as his student house not yet ready. He’s in our loft bedroom at the moment.

We had our youngest daughter in with us the other night and she was pretty restless with a virus so I was awake a lot. I’m pretty sure at 1am or so I heard my nephew come down from loft room and stand on the landing and yawn wait for a bit and then I think go upstairs again?!

I asked him next morning if he got up in the night and said it was really late he seemed to know what I was talking about but said I must have heard him go to bed or that he was going down for his phone. But it wasn’t that as I didn’t hear the stair gate opening at all from the ground floor to the landing and it’s really noisy so I definitely would. He didn’t come down to use the loo as there’s an en suite in the loft room. I asked him if he’s a sleepwalker but he said no. So I guess he was just standing outside our doors?!

Since he’s been fine. I have three daughters 6,3 and 1. They all love spending time with him and always have. (He’s my brothers son and there’s a big age gap between me and my brother).

I don’t know if it’s strange and I’m right to be a bit freaked out or if it’s an over reaction?!
My husband didn’t hear anything and thinks I’m a bit crazy.

Should I be a bit wary or get over it? My nephew is a kind and lovely young man in general!

Not really insinuating anything as not sure what to make of it but
will always be vigilant as I can about safe guarding my girls because of the world we live in…
And recently read a new article about that Netflix show where two teenage brothers randomly killed their parents (Monster) so maybe it’s just me having read that recently that got me a bit freaked out about a young lad standing outside our bedroom doors at 1am when we’re normally all asleep!

Edited

Christ if you're that worried send him home for his own sake.

He's your nephew who you've presumably known all his life. He's not going to murder you or attack your kids.

I think it's really odd you jumped straight to the worst possible explanation!

Maybe he wasn't feeling well and thought about waking you for medicine then felt too awkward and went back to bed?

KittytheHare · 29/09/2024 18:38

He put you in mind of Lyle Menendez???? 😧

Onelifeonly · 29/09/2024 18:38

Well he may sleep walk and be unaware of it? Or he did come down to get his phone as he said and didn't realise how long he stood there looking at it. I doubt he was contemplating whether to end anyone's life, as in the Netflix show!

I often hear my teenager moving around late at night - it’s ALWAYS for a drink or a snack.

Maybe he climbed over the safety gate? We used to when it was too noisy as night to
open.

Also find it quite sad that you at insinuating something weird about him.

Lking6795 · 29/09/2024 18:42

It is possible I’ve been watching too much true crime and reading too much news. Thanks all… I’ll take the lock off his door now 😉. (That’s me trying to be funny btw!)

The gate is right on the stairs if he’s stepped over it I’d have definitely heard him it’s about a 1 metre drop that other side onto the first stair!

He wasn’t wondering around per se just standing on the landing for 10 minutes yawning?! The landing light wasn’t on ano he was standing basically in complete darkness!
Obviously wouldn’t think it was odd if I’d heard him go downstairs and get a drink etc or something!

You only think you heard him. You’re looking for clues that probably aren’t there.

User050105 · 29/09/2024 18:43

I think coming down a flight of stairs then just standing on the landing for 10 minutes before going back to bed is weird. I'd wonder what he was doing too.

Does he get better mobile reception down there? Maybe he was going all the way down then realised the gate would make too much noise? But then surely he'd just have gone back up. I wouldn't over-analyse it or anything but it is weird. I don't think my 17 and 18 yr olds stand around in the hallway in the dark for 10 minutes doing nothing very often.
Maybe he was lonely?

BeachRide · 29/09/2024 18:43

Could it be too warm up there, and he came down to cool down?

liquidsquidli · 29/09/2024 18:43

Why on earth did you not go and ask him.

10 minutes standing and yawning It's really weird.

Next time he does this go and ask.

Ds was prone to sleepwalking for a few years and would only remember snippets the next morning. He would get up at 3am and be wandering around with just a towel around his waist looking for the shower, sometimes coming into our room. I'd ask him what he was doing and he'd go back to bed and not remember anything the next day.

He hasn't done it for a while now but he is a usual nocturnal young adult and goes downstairs for water, food, etc regularly. I don't mind as long as he is quiet and doesn't set off the fire alarm again at 2am!!!!

Fire alarm? Burglar alarm, surely?

Asleeponthejob · 29/09/2024 18:44

Ask his Dad if he sleepwalks .

DS - one of mine - does occasionally and it’s always in times of stress . He isn’t aware of it himself really

Hatty65 · 29/09/2024 17:58

I wander around at night and I'm not a teenager. I often wake after a couple of hours and I'm stiff/back hurts. I get up. Go downstairs. Maybe get a glass of milk.

I'm not sure that he's odd. If you are unable to sleep being trapped in one room and not leaving it would feel odd to me.

Yes me too. I often come down for a while at about 4, have a drink, and maybe a scrambled egg, before I go back to bed.

QuestionableMouse · 29/09/2024 18:46

Bignanna · 29/09/2024 18:44

Fire alarm because of cooking snacks presumably!

I couldn’t ask him because my toddler was finally asleep next to me as soon as I’d move she would wake up and she’d already been awake a lot of the night.

Sleepwalking, forgetting where he was and starting to go down for a snack before remembering he’s not at home, or feeling unwell and being hesitant to wake you up all seem much more likely than planning to murder his cousins…

smalltoe · 29/09/2024 18:53

If he was up to anything nefarious he wouldn't be yawing. He would be in a state of high alert.
He's just being a normal teen

Mumof2namechange · 29/09/2024 18:54

My first thought was he was seeking better wifi reception.

If you thought he might have been up to something dodgy, have you had any other moments where you felt that?

No, he’s quite introverted and keeps himself to himself and can generally be a bit vague but never had any reason for any concern or wouldn’t have said yes to his staying for 6 weeks.

NoSquirrels · 29/09/2024 19:06

Most likely explanation is sleepwalking and he doesn’t know he does it.

he probably heard toddler, which woke him, he then came down, but at that point toddler went quiet so he waited a few mins then realised you were probably asleep so went back to bed. I've done it before when grandkids are here, I've got up when it seems they aren't settling, ( parents with them) but they've then gone quiet so I go back to bed.

Reallybadidea · 29/09/2024 19:11

If I was aware that a guest in my house was standing on the landing for 10 minutes in the night then I'd pop my head out of the door and ask whether they were ok. Maybe he was homesick and debating whether to wake you to chat? Maybe he was wondering what the noise was coming from your room if your daughter is restless? Maybe he heard a noise and was worried that there was an intruder? Loads of innocent reasons that he might not want to share in the cold light of day related to being a teenager in a strange house.

letmego24 · 29/09/2024 19:12

You are anxious about it for some reason. Maybe he went down for his phone and thought better of it?

bringslight · 29/09/2024 19:12

Doesn't sound like he did much or anything worth mentioning
Sometimes I think I hear a man goes to the kitchen but my husband is next to me and I don't have sons nor other men so

Nemasu · 29/09/2024 19:13

If he was sleepwalking, he might not have realised that he had. He might not have any knowledge whether he sleep walks or not, unless someone else has ever previously seen it.

liquidsquidli · 29/09/2024 19:13

If any one was stood anywhere for 10 minutes in the light or dark, not doing anything, it's a cause for concern

Most likely is sleep walking.

What else Could it be.

Did it freak you out op? It would me!
