Are Sunday roasts still a thing in your house?

Will be picking up a lovely piece of beef rib today from the butchers.
It will be our first roast of the season and I'm looking forward to it already!
<greedy guts> 😆

Do you still do Sunday roasts?

We have a roast most Sundays but sometimes I'll do something else like a stew or coq au vin, something that feels special. It's the one day a week we sit at the table and eat together.
In the summer or on hot days I'll still roast a chicken but we'd have salad sides with it.

dontforgetme · 28/09/2024 12:13

We have a 'gravy meal' every week but that's during the working week usually. We have a proper Sunday roast maybe once every 2 months. We will have one more regularly during the colder months though.

@CinnamonTheCapybara Our DDog is equally fond of roasts, he always gets his share.😂

I’m a big fan of hot puddings too. I get urges to make crumbles sometimes, my family make fun of me as I’ll say that I “need” to make them, it’s almost a compulsion! I think it’s a comfort thing as my Mum used to make them regularly so it reminds me of childhood. A rice pudding would make a nice change, I’m hungry now. 😋

Ah, we are truly birds of a feather then! I am quite fanatical about crumbles, I knocked one together on Wednesday just because it had gone cold and grey outside. Sadly DDog and I had polished it off by the time DP got home late on Friday😮 Favourite one is rhubarb followed by apple, and a tinned apricot one for a change! Best accompaniment is hot custard, then cream, not so fussed with ice cream with a crumble. I do love a rice pudding, preferably a hot one with the skin still on, divine! Generally a huge fan of a lot of the old school puddings… would quite happily live on them!🐷

Pretty much every Sunday during the colder months, but eaten in the evening, not lunch time.

I did do a lunch time roast today though as I was cold and we are going out tonight and tomorrow. The first roast potatoes I've cooked since March, and my goodness, they were fantastic 👌

I love a good crumble. Last weeks roast was topped off with Apple and raspberry crumble and custard.
This week I'm doing a peach crumble. Mmmm I can't wait.

BruFord · 29/09/2024 01:18

I made blueberry crumbles today with frozen fruit. Tastes good with some custard.

I do love rhubarb or apple and blackberry as well. 😋

Bobje · 29/09/2024 07:54

It just goes to show we're all different and everyone has their own way of doing things.

I find roast dinners one of the easier meals to put together as I've been doing them since my teens.
I think a lasagne is more faffy but that's my sister's speciality so it all evens out.
She comes here for her roast dinner fix, and I'll go to hers if I fancy a lasagne 🙂

Anyway.
Happy Sunday everyone, hope you all enjoy whatever you're having today!

Not on a Sunday generally as due to shift patterns we are rarely all together on a Sunday.

Not unusual to have a midweek roadt

FasterMichelin · 29/09/2024 08:10

No, we can't fit it in the schedule. Our weekends are usually very busy but if not, the last thing I want to do is cook for 2 hours and then clean up for another 30mins.

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 29/09/2024 08:13

Yes because it’s “tradition”!!

Usually chicken, pork or gammon but will have beef or lamb if they’re on special offer and Turkey at Christmas. Always have roast potatoes with them and 3 different veggies. Got to have gravy and, depending on the meat - apple, mint or cranberry sauce

Today it will be leg of pork from the shop at our local garden centre as it’s nicer quality meat than from the supermarket and locally sourced!

sashh · 29/09/2024 08:32

There is a café near me that delivers the roast. I occasionally get one.

Sometimes my carer and I make a roast between us.

I put the meat on (that he doesn't eat) and depending on my health prep the veg that are not potatoes.

He peels and roasts the potatoes, makes the Yorkshire pudding and some sausages for himself.

Peach, you say….? 🍑

Hmmm… haven’t had a peach one for years… we used to get gooseberry crumble at school - do gooseberries still exist, haven’t seen them in many a long year! Where would I even begin looking for them🤷‍♀️

HappyDane · 29/09/2024 14:21

Oh yes I also love making a crumble and will do so quite often, usually on a whim when the mood hits. It makes me feel very cosy and grounded.

I'm also planning a peach crumble this week! But only with tinned peaches - trialling some quick and easy cupboard staple puddings that I can make anytime. On that note, does anyone have a good recipe for a very small cake? I'm envisaging something that's just enough for two, without leftovers, as DH and I both need to watch our intake of sweets for health reasons.

sashh · 30/09/2024 02:56

For cake have a look at 'mug cakes' literally a cake made in a mug, usually in the microwave.

Bobje · 06/10/2024 09:52

Anyone having a roast today?

We are going to the in-laws for one 😄

I've got a slow cooked rump steak in a red wine and gravy sauce with roast potatoes and veg 🤤

FuckMiniBabybells · 06/10/2024 10:06

Big fat roast with chicken and gammon and homemade apple pie and custard for afters 😝

Howdiditgetsobad · 06/10/2024 10:59

Yep. Quiet Sunday - out for a walk this morning, back this afternoon for a cosy film and then roast beef and apple crumble with apples from the garden. BIL coming over to join us.

HappyDane · 06/10/2024 11:09

It's not strictly a roast today but it does have all the elements:

Rolled brisket pot roasted in gravy
Potatoes - not sure how we'll do them yet
Carrot, swede, parsnip
Homemade Yorkshire puddings
Horseradish sauce

Really looking forward to it. 🙂

Oh and baked apple pudding for after!

Yes; roast chicken and stuffing this weekend - we tend to rotate between chicken, pork, beef and gammon!

Crinkle77 · 06/10/2024 11:51

Yep have a roast most Sundays.

AllAboutNiamh · 06/10/2024 11:55

We were both raised in homes where there was a roast every Sunday without fail.

My husband still loves them, as do the kids, so he’ll enjoy doing one if everyone is here. We’d never bother having one just for 2 of us.

Even though my husband’s roasts are extraordinarily good and he goes to a lot of effort, I could happily have one only at Christmas.

Swg · 06/10/2024 11:56

Yes. I do a roast most Sundays. We've just had a big cooked brunch so that will be us stuffed until mid afternoon when I'll do the roast. There's only three of us but I cook like there's six of us and package up leftovers. The kids, particularly the bottomless eleven year old, snack on them over the next couple of days. Roast potatoes and left over Yorkshire puddings will be gone by tomorrow dinner time and the meat will last a couple of days. Far better for him to snack on than crisps and cheaper than buying packaged meat!

hiredandsqueak · 06/10/2024 18:44

yes we had roast chicken and all the trimmings today. Plenty of leftovers for bubble and squeak tomorrow.
