Are Sunday roasts still a thing in your house?

Will be picking up a lovely piece of beef rib today from the butchers.
It will be our first roast of the season and I'm looking forward to it already!
<greedy guts> 😆

Do you still do Sunday roasts?

Most weeks but if I can't manage Sunday I do Saturday or Monday.

Peridot1 · 27/09/2024 14:10

Most weeks except in summer. We eat in the evening. DH usually does it. Or we might have steak. Will still have roast potatoes with steak though. In summer it might be bbq.

BunnyLake · 27/09/2024 14:11

I was just thinking today that I might do a roast dinner soon as the weather is turning. I don’t do them often though and it doesn’t have to be a Sunday. One son doesn’t like pork or beef and I won’t buy lamb so we’re usually a bit limited to chicken. I could do beef or pork while he’s at Uni for other son. I’m quite looking forward to having one now.

We have aircon so have been having them throughout the summer

RidingMyBike · 27/09/2024 14:15

Yes, but not on a Sunday!

I like doing it weekly, then having loads of leftovers to make into a few more meals, whether cold meat, cottage/shepherd's pie or lots of roast vegetables.

Alicana · 27/09/2024 14:17

We have one for Christmas, but make loads of tasty side dishes so it’s a bit more exciting. We don’t really like traditional Sunday roasts and rarely have the same meal once a week anyway. Sundays are spent out and about so we tend to eat out too.

RidingMyBike · 27/09/2024 14:18

Oh and not at lunchtime as the cooking/clearing up would take up too much of the daytime. But as an evening meal yes!

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 27/09/2024 14:20

Yes most weekends.

We normally have pork or chicken but I'd rather lamb if it wasn't so expensive. I quite enjoy pottering about getting stuff done but I don't also do the tidying up!

DiscoBeat · 27/09/2024 14:21

Yes but it's not always on Sundays. I guess on average they're about once a fortnight. Usually chicken or nut roast.

Fizbosshoes · 27/09/2024 14:22

My kids (teens) virtually stage a mutiny if we don't do a roast dinner on a sunday but are never keen to assist with it DD has just gone to uni so she'll have to live without
I have to say washing up greasy pans from a roast is probably my worst job (they don't fit in the dishwasher)

Loveafridaynightchippy · 27/09/2024 14:26

I do them a bit in winter, probably do the first one in November, then Christmas dinner then a couple from January-March, but that’s all. We live abroad so it’s not winter for long and I love doing other dishes I don’t do from April-Oct really, like lasagna, bologneses, currries, chilli etc

WonderingAboutBabies · 27/09/2024 14:34

No, my parents never really bothered unless it was Easter/Christmas. My DH's parents do them quite often and I love the food and family feeling it gives. We're now expecting our first child and all of a sudden I've started introducing them into our Sundays!

EternallyDelighted · 27/09/2024 14:46

No, my parents ditched out of this habit when I was about 8 and I have continued their custom of only doing it about twice a year apart from Christmas. I like them but once every few months is enough. One of my DCs dislikes them completely and has pizza at Christmas.

Gettingbysomehow · 27/09/2024 14:48

They have never been a thing in our house. We are vegetarians so would have a nut roast with the usual side dishes at Christmas.

olympicsrock · 27/09/2024 14:53

Yes nearly every week! Best family time of the week. We keep it fairly simple.

reluctantbrit · 27/09/2024 14:54

Not every weekend but maybe once a month. We eat it on Sunday dinner though, I start around 4pm so the day is not fully wasted and don't do it when we are away for the day.

I find them easy, just plonk it the meat in the oven, prep potatoes and veg and wait, check a couple of times, put the potatoes/veg on and serve.

We do pork or chicken.

Washing up is left to DH.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 27/09/2024 14:56

I grew up with it - huge meal and food coma and TV afterwards on Sunday - one of few times we all sat down to a meal together.

Wasn't as bothered by it post leaving home - DH insisted we have it when we moved in- I think he grew up with it most not all weeks - but much smaller version and not everything ever week.

We did it throughout DC childhood - unlike my parents it's one of many meals we eat together as a family but I found it stressful when kids were babies and toddler clinging to me especially when his parents were over so DH took it over and it became one meal a week I never have to think about. Sometimes in summer we have BBQ instead.

Not sure we'll do it when just three of us or at all when just us two - DH says we may go out for it bit more - have to see.

LeoOakley · 27/09/2024 14:57

We love a Sunday roast, but I only really cook them from about November to April. We are in S.Europe and after Easter it's too hot to be cooking, or eating one.

As soon as weather turns they will be back on the menu! 😋

MrsSunshine2b · 27/09/2024 15:01

Sometimes, but we're a small family of 3 so it rarely seems worth making a big roast.

LadyDanburysHat · 27/09/2024 15:04

We probably have one around once a month, but not weekly like I had growing up.

Clearinguptheclutter · 27/09/2024 15:04

No. We’re a mostly vegetarian family though which is part of it

we do make more of an effort for “Sunday tea” (not lunch) than other meals though, and i tend to either buy or make a proper dessert which doesn’t happen the rest of the week

HighPrecisionGhosts · 27/09/2024 15:06

We do but rarely on the Sunday. Usually a Saturday or Monday, every other week, when all of us are home.

Not fussed about the meat. Its the roast potatoes and veg for me and yorkshire puds.
I find it easy to make and the others do the washing up.

Starlight1979 · 27/09/2024 15:18

Yep DP makes one every week! Think we're on gammon this week. Last week was pork. Next will probably be chicken or beef. We rotate meats every week on a 4-5 weekly cycle 😃

If it were down to me we would never have them as I can't be arsed with the faff (I'm more of a one-pan cook myself!) but he seems to love doing them so I let him crack on 😊

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 27/09/2024 15:19

We have a roast nearly every Sunday, i love them. Mainly chicken or gammon sometimes Beef.

ifonly4 · 27/09/2024 15:20

We do have roasts (although with fish or veggie option) as and when we fancy them, but they've never been a thing.

I've worked on Sundays in recent years, and it's the last thing I fancy doing now after work anyway - plus I'm hungry and couldn't wait that long😂
