Are Sunday roasts still a thing in your house?

Will be picking up a lovely piece of beef rib today from the butchers.
It will be our first roast of the season and I'm looking forward to it already!
<greedy guts> 😆

Do you still do Sunday roasts?

Not in our house, there's only two of us and Sunday is rugby day then DD goes to her dad's.

My mum often cooks a roast though

GingerLiberalFeminist · 27/09/2024 15:59

Most weekends absolutely. How else could I make the chicken last a whole week if it's not roasted on a Sunday?

Joking aside yes most weekends we have a roast of some kind.

Stressfordays · 27/09/2024 15:59

I work most Sundays but when I'm off, if we're not out, I will do a Sunday roast. I'm off next Sunday and other then football in the morning, have no plans so it will be a roast, followed by a walk up to the local pub.

No, I dislike all the last minute work. I'd far rather make a casserole and leave it for hours to do its magic. My kids love a roast, probably because I do them so rarely!

notacooldad · 27/09/2024 16:02

They've never been a thing in my house.

Parker231 · 27/09/2024 16:03

No - very rare. No one particularly likes them and a lot of work for one meal

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 27/09/2024 16:04

@Bobje always have a roast, not necessarily on a sunday. and the left overs will make a curry or a pot of stovies for the next night's tea!

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 27/09/2024 16:04

Absolutely. Sometimes during tbe week instead. Can't beat a roast dinner, hubby makes the best!

Lidlisthebusiness · 27/09/2024 16:09

We have one every week. I'm bored of them, but everyone else enjoys it so we carry on.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 27/09/2024 16:09

Vegetarian Sunday roasts can be really nice. I can make a good nut roast as well or I buy in a mushroom wellington sometimes.

Disasterclass · 27/09/2024 16:25

Never been a thing in our house, and not really much of a thing in my family home growing up. I love a Christmas dinner, but otherwise don't really get the fuss about a roast

Crunchymum · 27/09/2024 16:28

They've never been a thing in our house.

DP isn't a massive fan so I never bothered for the both of us. Oldest DC is of the same ilk so it was just not something I made regularly.

I do variations of a roast. We often have roast chicken, mash and green veg or lamb, minted new potatoes and veg. I just rarely do the "classic" roast.

I always do a Christmas dinner though (even if we aren't at home on the day) and usually do a roast at Easter and I'm always happy to be a guest at the in-laws who do the regular roast most Sunday's 😋

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/09/2024 16:28

Today I picked up a half leg of lamb in Sainsbury’s - £7.33 with Nectar card, £14.67 without! Not use by tomorrow or anything, 7th Oct.

I thought it must be a mistake, but there were others similar and it went fine through the self checkout.

So it’s definitely going to be roast lamb on Sunday! But for dinner, not lunch.

somethinggotmestarted · 27/09/2024 16:29

Yes, always have a roast. Or a version of ie not always a joint, might have steak or lamb chops etc

Puddingcakes · 27/09/2024 16:42

I love them but can never be bothered to make them- I’m vegan so have to make Yorkshire puddings from scratch and I am too lazy !

NoTouch · 27/09/2024 16:57

HauntedbyMagpies · 27/09/2024 15:50

@NoTouch Too much effort for two people?! Most households only have two adults or less! What a strange way of thinking...

Not "strange", just different from yours, and I’m sure as many people share my perspective as they do yours!

What's even stranger is the faux shock?! and feeling the need to critique such a neutral statement directly to me!

It just goes to show that we all have different opinions, whether it's about what's okay for Sunday dinner or the appropriate way to respond to someone else in a discussion.

SingingSands · 27/09/2024 16:59

Never. We like a Sunday curry instead. Mostly because I prefer cooking things that only use one or two pots. The faff of a roast is reserved for Christmas Day only.

Dontcallmescarface · 27/09/2024 17:21

Roast dinners aren't a thing in our house at all. Neither me nor DP particularly like them so we don't bother. Thinking about it I can't actually remember the last time either of us cooked one.....probably the last time we cooked a Christmas dinner for my parents which was in 2019.

We don’t do a roast on Christmas Day either - everyone prefers a cold buffet

BadBarry · 27/09/2024 22:15

Yes every Sunday - it's an all round favourite.

BondStreet · 27/09/2024 22:16

We’re often not in on a Sunday so we’ll usually have brunch out or a Sunday roast at a restaurant. Cannot beat a roast!

Birdscratch · 27/09/2024 22:26

It wasn’t something I grew up with and I’ve never done it. I like slow cooked stews on a Sunday in the winter. Something you can assemble in 40 minutes or less and then forget about for 4 hours. You can go out and do stuff and come back home to a dinner that’s ready to eat. It’s really appreciated as the weather gets colder.

StrongAutumn · 27/09/2024 22:31

We are empty nesters. I make some sort of 'traditional' main meal on Sundays for the two of us but not a full-on roast.

If the kids are visiting for the weekend then I would definitely go all out and make a roast.

We sometimes have other empty nesters over for a Sunday lunch party.

It's a lot of work to make but everyone loves and appreciates it.

justjuggling · 27/09/2024 22:32

Yes, every Sunday. Rounds the weekend off perfectly!

MrsCarson · 27/09/2024 22:53

Yes we do a roast just about every Sunday. I have a nice Silverside beef roast for this weekend. Then the rest of the week it's get sliced up and we can have Beef and mustard sandwich at some point.
