Are Sunday roasts still a thing in your house?

Will be picking up a lovely piece of beef rib today from the butchers.
It will be our first roast of the season and I'm looking forward to it already!
<greedy guts> 😆

Do you still do Sunday roasts?

No. We're usually visiting elderly relatives in or out of nursing homes on Sunday mornings so lunch isn't much of a thing that day, and I don't want a huge meal to take up the rest of the day. We're pescatarian as well so not going to have a joint.

Used to do it most weeks when ds was younger and dh was alive (omnivore).

GuestSpeakers · 27/09/2024 13:44

Yes but not on a particular day and we're veggie so it doesn't take hours to roast meat. We can get it done in about 1hr - 1hr 15

WonderlandinAlice · 27/09/2024 13:49

Definitely not, my dad used to insist on one every single week and I was made to sit there and suffer this tradition right up to the moment I left home when I was 20 - him being 3 sheets to the wind didn’t help 😐

We do do a veggie roast dinner during the winter months but it’ll be when we fancy it not just because it’s a Sunday

Yes. Sunday roast every week. It's not something that I grew up with but my kids love it.

Anisty · 27/09/2024 13:53

Used to be every single Sunday when the kids were growing up. We still have 3 adult kids at home but 2 of them are often working Sundays or doing their own things.

So, i do them only once every couple of months now. And sometimes we just nip out to the Toby!

rzb · 27/09/2024 13:53

Yes, most weekends through the autumn/winter/spring we'll have a full roast dinner or a pot roast, and we'll have the occasional one in summer. We can get good local beef, lamb (and hogget and mutton), pork, turkey, venison, and goat, less so chicken, and it's nice to feel that we're supporting the local economy whilst having a tasty, family meal. We like having leftovers for lunches or in sandwiches, and/or making a veg soup with any spare veg and whatever's at the back of the veg drawer, so there's little waste.

ThisPresetIsSelected · 27/09/2024 13:53

I've a friend who does them every Sunday. My parents still do most weeks (and I did growing up) but we do them probably once a month or so. Usually evening rather than lunchtime though if that makes a difference?

TigerRag · 27/09/2024 13:55

No. I live alone and feels like too much hard work just for one person! Will sometimes chuck frozen potatoes and chicken in the oven and do some microwave veg

mindutopia · 27/09/2024 13:57

We do but maybe only once a month and not during the summer. We often tend to make them for Sunday dinner though, not lunch, which would more be the tradition around here, simply because we’d rather go do something on a Sunday. If the weather sucks though, we might do it at the more usual lunch time.

Thudercatsrule · 27/09/2024 13:57

We only have a roast when my MIL kindly invites us, about twice a month and its the best roast ever. I could never the cook the same.

Screamingabdabz · 27/09/2024 13:58

No. Too much time to make and loads of cleaning up. Mind you, the state of roasts eating out is shocking - so I will begrudgingly make one with all the kids are back home. Everyone thinks they’ve died and gone to heaven!

I like a roast but CBA to spend half the day making it on a Sunday.

It becomes just another routine in my already routine-filled life.

Might be more appealing when the weathers bad and I’m thinking of things to do indoors.

You can cheat with a slow cooker - it makes lovely beef. You literally just pop it in on its own, stick the lid on and turn on low. 5 hours later - yum, yum!

Get some Aunt bessie spuds, bisto gravy.

Frozen sprouts. Doesn't take long to do carrots.

And yorkshires from freezer too.

It's ok for just an ordinary Sunday!

Chicken is safe in a slow cooker too but you need to put a draining rack (or balls of foil) to keep it off the bottom and let the fat drain.

No crispy skin but the meat turns out so tender - just falls off the bone.

About 5 to 6 hours on low. No attention needed. Check internal temp with probe until you have done a few.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 27/09/2024 14:00

No, thank God. It really is one of the most boring meals, we don't even have a Christmas dinner here!

RightSedFred · 27/09/2024 14:00

Yes, we have one most weeks. After all these years I have my system down to a fine art, so they don't take much more effort than any other dinner really.

Devilsmommy · 27/09/2024 14:00

NahNotHavingIt · 27/09/2024 13:29

Oh God yes

My DH does a roast dinner every single Sunday, no matter what.

It's not the only reason I'm still married to him but it's up there in the top 5 😁🍠🍗

Anyone who makes you roast potatoes every week is a legend IMO 😁😂

DizzyBumble · 27/09/2024 14:01

No but I absolutely love them. Might do one this weekend

HappyDane · 27/09/2024 14:01

Most definitely!

Generally do a roast on most, but not quite all, Sundays from early autumn through to late spring. Even in summer we tend to have a couple per month.

This week we're having a roast today because I just fancied it and it's a meal I can do without any thinking whatsoever so I find it relaxing to do (stressful time atm), so we won't have one on Sunday and we'll just have beef bourguignon on Sunday instead.

I don't necessarily mean a strictly traditional roast, though - as long as the bird or joint is roasted I call it a roast even if it's not quite meat, two veg, roasties and stuffing...

EasternStandard · 27/09/2024 14:02

During mid - late autumn and winter

BananaGrapeMelon · 27/09/2024 14:03

Yes, we have one most Sundays in the winter. We haven't started yet though - maybe next weekend.

MyCatTibby · 27/09/2024 14:05

Yes! Love a good roast dinner to tuck into! We are having roast beef this weekend. Don't do them every week but quite often. So its not too much of a faff my secret is to batch cook cauliflower cheeses and yorkshire puddings when I have a bit of time and defrost them and then reheat on the day. Also I pre-peel and freeze whole carrots and bake them in the oven on the day (they don't take as long if they have been frozen). So its just a case of cooking the meat and roast potatoes on the day and chucking a bit of veg on the hob.

itwasnevermine · 27/09/2024 14:05

My parents have one every Sunday night, no matter the weather

This is my sentiment exactly! Far too many other more interesting meals to make.

I cook one when I visit my parents every couple of months as apparently mine is much better than theirs.

Occasionally the DSC will ask my DH to make one as they love them, but they have one every other week religiously with their mum so no pressure to do very often.

HappyDane · 27/09/2024 14:06

Ohhh I'm looking forward to dinner tonight!

BeeDavis · 27/09/2024 14:07

I cook a roast pretty much every week or do a Sunday dinner of some kind! Only time I don’t is if we have plans on a Sunday, which isn’t often. Even then, I will usually do it on a Monday instead. I bloody love them and love making them.

Growlybear83 · 27/09/2024 14:08

I still do a roast for my husband most weeks. I've never eaten roast meat, apart from turkey and occasionally chicken, but he loves a Sunday roast.
