What things do you think are ridiculously expensive and you don't know why?

I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

I do HP smart Ink
it costs me 3.99 a month , the printer automatically tells HP when my ink is run out and sends me cartridges through the post.
It’s MUCH cheaper than going out / sourcing / buying / ordering ink .

Olive oil

CranfordScones · 25/09/2024 22:43

For all the people saying curtains, buy decent fabric (it's expensive for a reason) and try making your own. Then you'll appreciate just how much work goes in to them. Our values are skewed by all the mass produced goods that come from very low wage economies.

It is miles cheaper from an online pharmacy.

But has the gp looked into why you need it so often?

Edited

Thanks i'll check it out. No, they weren't bothered, but it's worse depending on where I am in my cycle, so i'm guessing it's fluctuating hormone levels, plus i'm getting old.

Omeprazole, £3.99 for a generic version that lasts 3-6days, the Dr won't prescribe it, so some(most) months when I am really broke I just have to suffer with the pain, trouble swallowing and reflux.

Have you told the doctor you can't afford it?

If you have reflux it will erode the oesophageal cells so you should push them to prescribe and explain you're having to go without it because you can't afford it. I would expect them to prescribe in those circumstances.

Wantitalltogoaway · 25/09/2024 22:45

Hotels in the UK.

Before Covid I would regularly go and stay a night in London for around £100. I looked today and it’s £225 even for a very basic room at a basic hotel.

I came on to stay take away tea. They wanted £3.20 for a tea at costa when I stopped at the services on Saturday. £3.20 for some hot water and a tea bag that probably cost them about 3p!
I got one from McDonald's in the end for £1.20 and I was still outraged at that!

I’m finding that tea and coffee outside in cafes is ridiculously expensive these days. I’m sure it used to be a lot cheaper

DadJoke · 25/09/2024 22:46

Printer ink is so ridiculously expensive that I’m willing to jump through all the hoops the manufacture puts in the way and wear a facemask to refill. It saved £100s.

i am pretty sure I know what Rage Against The Machine were angry about.

Pet insurance
Train fares

Pet insurance - my dog has just been diagnosed with leukaemia and insurance is covering everything with no arguments and just kindness. Totally understand why it’s so expensive but felt like you last week. Dog is only 4.

bodydrain · 25/09/2024 22:49

Perfume

HopelesslyOptimistic · 25/09/2024 22:17

What does compatible mean. I'm desperate to find a cheaper option.

Aldi do centre aisle bargains on toothbrush heads that are compatible with a range of models. Obviously it's not every week but worth looking out for.

RichmondReader · 25/09/2024 22:49

Marmite
Razorblades
Premier League Football ANYTHING - match day tickets / season tickets / shirts
Museli
Agree with birthday cards
Decent jeans. Any pair that isn't from a supermarket or M&S seems to start at around £90.

Nectarines (even in season)
Mouthwash

When I was little, we never had kitchen roll or Ribena as my mum considered these 'overpriced' and a bit 'decadent'. My list is getting much much longer.....

Greetings cards.

I buy all mine at charity shops now. There was a line in the sand "that will be £5.50 please" for a pretty but small card on the high street....I hadn't checked the price and actually changed my mind and left the card (politely) at the till.

Lampshades! I'm trying to find a replacement for one that fell apart recently. £25 for the most boring beige bit of wire and paper faux linen. Anything even vaguely interesting starts at about £45. Anything I actually like starts at £70.

@Autumnweddingguest Have you tried The Range? I needed to replace the shade on a Laura Ashley floor lamp, Looked for ages to replace it with something similar - wide cream linen type cylinder. couldn't find anything under £40 then found one identical to the original - £3 0r £4

MagentaRavioli · 25/09/2024 22:51

Body shop
Lush

TBH, how many of those do you need to buy in a month, though?
