I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

On the berries, I kind of understand why they are so expensive. But why are frozen ones quite cheap? They still need the same growing and picking process.

The frozen ones don't go out-of-date as quickly as the fresh ones. The price of a punnet of fresh strawberries has to factor in the cost to produce the punnets that don't sell and get binned.

Ironing boards

Chairs

Kitchen roll

This has reminded me that I have a couple of rolls of reusable kitchen roll on the cupboard. You just use a sheet and then wash it. It's very durable and lasts for ages!

Virgin fecking media!
Fresh food
mattresses
Good pens
Molton Brown shower gel when Bergamot from Lidl is 25 times cheaper?!!!!

It depends I think. We wanted to visit the coast... about an hour's drive. Train tickets were about £20 return. This seems reasonable but when we worked it out for four of us, driving was much cheaper.

Exactly, I’m on my own. Perhaps family tickets are the key?

Use brown paper and draw on it, or decorate it with any oddments you may have lying around.

I do this with a combination of Sharpies and stickers!

Summertimer · 26/09/2024 22:57

Cars and everything it takes to keep them on the road. I find it inexplicable that it doesn’t put more people off driving. We haven’t for years.

Some of us need or want to go to places that aren't served by buses at the time of day that we want to go there.

What made me take an intensive driving course and pass my test was being turned down for a job because the earliest bus of the day couldn't get me there in time for shift start at 8am.

The job I got just weeks after passing my test started at 5am.

I'm on my own too and there's no offers.
I'd love to go abroad, but everything is based on two sharing

With bras, it's the precision craftsmanship that demands the price tag. Lots of small parts that have to be cut and sewn very precisely.

But you get the same quality of bra for much less elsewhere. I’m not sure the ones sold here are even made here either.

Ryvita! used to be on offer for £1 at Asda, and when not on offer for around £1.15p. Now it is inching (or centimertering !) up to nearly £2 a packet. No longer buy it, used to enjoy crispbreads and cheese for lunch but no more

Lidl’s sesame dupes are only £1, I prefer them

Yes, only for train tickets, any sort of packaged holiday is based on two sharing.

Heinz Baked Beans and soup (they almost need mortgages).

Rental car insurance.

We paid the insurance a couple of weeks ago for a rental, then someone must have bumped into us at traffic lights and scratched the car: a few scratches over no more than 2x2 inch surface. That was £250. We stupidly forgot to buy the extra insurance for the waiver, which we have done in the past, to cover all costs. It was a big car and we didn’t feel the bump, but heard the satnav bleeping and showing something. Logged it after with the police as there was CCTV at that site, but didn’t get details at the time as we didn’t feel it happening and being an unfamiliar car didn’t know what it was telling us. Still waiting to hear if the repair is less than £250 and we get any money back. So I’d say worth the money but also buy the extra insurance against the insurance IYKWIM.

Dom Pérignon 76.. ridiculous over priced.. joke. Let me explain
Actually even though I worked among those who drank that kind of thing ( to clarify I was crew on those rather large yachts in the 80s ) none of the guests imo who'd understood the difference if it was bloody tizer. oops just showing my age remembering soft drinks tizer.

I've tried supermarket DD+ bras and believe me they lack sizing consistency that pricier brands have. The supermarket bras didn't even have the same length back strap despite being the same style in the same size. Consistency is an important part of quality and it costs money.

Bras attract VAT here, so they will be pricier than in other countries that don't put sales taxes on underwear.

Jewellery diamonds. Unlike industrial diamonds that are actually useful, all they do is look sparkly, yet they cost ridiculous amounts for what is basically decorative fossilised trees.

Takeaway pizza. The mark up is ridiculous!

Buy men's ones, they're meant to be much cheaper.

Selectspecs could be your answer. You can get frames for a cheap as £6 made to your prescription. I'm always leaving my reading glasses in restaurants and cocktail bars so I've had dozens from here...

I got quite nice frames at Specsavers for £30 which I felt was quite reasonable.
