I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

I’d also agree with take away tea. But actual coffee as well. Bubble tea also. My kids love a bubble tea or a Starbucks. Went to Australia and places like that are dead cheap. Apparently their coffee culture means so many in competition with each other. But even the chains like Starbucks were almost half the price. And Australia is an expensive place for most things!!

Trainers
iPhones
Starbucks coffee
Razors
Tampons
Printer Ink

Don't know if it's been said already but Pampers nappies. They are SO much more expensive than unbranded and really not any better.

treacledan71 · 26/09/2024 20:20

I need a bread bin. Omg can't believe the price for a decent néw one.

Hoover bags, or in this case Miele ones. The alternative non-brand ones are rubbish in comparison, and the reusable/washable ones are disgusting. I know it's a 1st world problem but I'd rather spend £ on other stuff.

Really? I find amazon own brand bags to be fine in my Miele?

JaffaCake70 · 26/09/2024 20:33

Options Hot Chocolate. £5 for 220g tub from Tesco. My favourite but a definite no at this price ☹️

Tinned soup.

Heinz yes! Supermarket own brand a third to a quarter cheaper.

Make your own soup. Great for using up old veg - yellowing broccoli, bendy carrots. Add a stock cube, herbs and spices to suit taste/veg.

Yellowing broccoli when blitzed up is green

Theatre tickets.

I used to love going to the theatre and would like to take my kids more but they cost £100-£150 for a decent seat now so times that by 4 and you could go on a little weekend trip instead! I feel priced out and I’m on a decent wage. That’s not factoring in travel or food expenses. Way too much! 😭

Gloriousgardener11 · 26/09/2024 20:56

Lamb, we are knee deep in sheep in this country but lamb is SO expensive!

Yes! I used to love pantomimes when I was little so really wanted to start this tradition with our family but even they are all well overpriced for us as the baby is the same price as a 16 year old would be! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Olives
Takeaway coffee

Car parts. Earlier this year, came back from grocery shopping to find my passenger wing mirror and surround was smashed up. Parked in the part of car park where the CCTV was out of action! Cost £430! Now wing mirrors are electric - adjustments. Some cars have heated wing mirrors and lights.

I agree. I stopped buying it a couple of years ago due to the extortionate price.
Now I don't miss it so I won't buy it again.

anon666 · 26/09/2024 21:25

Adblu. It was £30 for a mix of water and urea!

Lamb

When I visited the UK last year it cost the same for a leg of frozen NZ lamb as it does for a fresh leg of lamb here in NZ. WTF? Same brand, shipped half way around the world. Cost of food is eye-watering in NZ. Wine here is at least $15 a bottle. 70% of what is on the shelves is $20+. A litre of Gordons gin will set you back $50.

All of the above plus Lurpak and also branded cereals. Big box of kelloggs honey nut flakes now over £4 wtf.

Also concert tickets seem to require you to remortgage your house these days.

Go to Costco -Lurpak is much cheaper there!

DadJoke · 26/09/2024 22:00

I ordered a 5l can of Greek Olive Oil in 2021 - just went to reorder it, and it is more than twice as expensive.

Because the development technology that has gone into the security devices within the key/car are a part of what you're paying for

Also dealerships need to make a profit to stay in business otherwise there's no one around to fix your car under warranty or not warranty work or buy parts from

It's the greater picture not just the metal and plastic

gift wrapping paper

Use brown paper and draw on it, or decorate it with any oddments you may have lying around.

Bras, they are just a small bit of material.
vets.
private GPs.
Both bras and vets were very reasonable prices elsewhere, but in the UK they are over priced.

With bras, it's the precision craftsmanship that demands the price tag. Lots of small parts that have to be cut and sewn very precisely.

Birthday cards. Why are packets of Christmas cards so much cheaper?

I bought a huge bundle of mixed birthday cards from The Works a few years ago. They worked out to be very cheap and I still have loads left! With Christmas cards, I buy them in the Christmas sales from the year before, so get them for half price. Obviously, you can't be fussy with the design, size etc but they save me some money.
