I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

Council tax being more expensive the higher you live (if in a block of flats)

GameOfJones · 26/09/2024 09:20

Bog roll and butter

That's my new band name sorted 🤣

Yes to this! Thought I'd treat myself to some ones for the sitting room a few days ago... absolutely ridiculous prices so i didnt bother

Yes they can be £30-50 each. I would need 4 minimum for it to look proportionate on my sofas. 4 years in my house and I’ve not upgraded mine yet! Everytime I see some I scoff at the prices and can’t justify it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/09/2024 09:26

Trains are ridiculous. I don’t even consider trains an option for transport anymore.

I live in the North. We can get 3 of us to London in a car for about £70.

3 train tickets would be about £300 min.

Comedycook · 26/09/2024 09:31

Ds16 needed some new tracksuit bottoms...a pair of Nike ones was about £50!

Tryonemoretime · 26/09/2024 09:38

Quality Street. Plastic tubs of their chocolates are getting smaller and smaller.

reesewithoutaspoon · 26/09/2024 09:40

Definitely transport. It's cheaper to go visit my family in Ireland than go to London unless I get a train that arrives around midnight

Olive oil. It literally grows on fucking trees.

Hhhm so this one does have an explanation. The yield is heavily affected by weather,, too wet and they are ruined Spain lost so many for a couple of years thwt it raised the price significantly. Also to produce a small amount of oil takes a fair no of olives and to remove them from the tree either reduces the yield through waste or is labour intensive.

We have family who produce olives to be used as olive oil.

Re glasses, try Glasses Direct, 2 pairs prescription specs for £15.

Snacks and drinks from vending machines. Vending machines ought to have far lower overheads than shops - a staff member is rarely present and the machines’ square footage is tiny. Customers who use them run the small but significant risk of losing their money. Dozens of customers have been killed by vending machines after trying to rock or tip them, possibly because the bloody machine had just stolen their money.

Yet a chocolate bar from a vending machine costs far more than one from a shop. Why?

This is the plot of Terminator: Rise of the Vending Machines.

School pe kits. Absolutely extortionate.

Those Pukka herbal teas - £4.75 a packet and I’m sure there is less in the bags than there used to be.

I used to always drink these but the price is too much now

Council tax is based on value bands from a set point in time. Are you sure it’s based no the height and not the size of the flat?

Azera Coffee - sometimes it's almost 7 quid!
Marmite
UK holidays

Get a bean to cup coffee machine. Much better value long term and better coffee!

Agree about lampshades

Bought a new build a year ago, got a job lot of those cheap white ones from IKEA for 'the meantime' to avoid a million bare bulbs

We're still going to have them when we move out aren't we?

Do you mean the paper ones? I still have mine five years later! But imo they're the best ones, the diffuse the light really nicely

There are toothbrushes going for around £450 in Boots wtf! Do people who aren’t millionaires actually pay that amount?

Vinorosso74 · 26/09/2024 10:33

Car insurance.
Stamps.

They do wash and wear well though. But if your child grows quickly, that's not particularly helpful!

On the berries, I kind of understand why they are so expensive. But why are frozen ones quite cheap? They still need the same growing and picking process.

Bloody hell, that is daylight robbery!
How do you become a registrar? I need to look into this😂.

oneeggisunoeuf · 26/09/2024 12:07

Greetings cards and wrapping paper.
Stamps - I only send a few Christmas cards now, so expensive to send them I can see them dying out in the next 20 years.
Heinz ketchup. Used to get Stokes as a treat, but Heinz is nearly as expensive now.

Those roof boxes for the car. We looked at getting one once and I naively thought it would be about £50. I was staggered to see they were several hundred pounds - and this was quite a few years ago.

They sell very well on eBay if you don't need them any longer, we had a large 'ultima thule' brand top box for when we used to drive to the French alps for skiing hols. We put it on eBay and it fetched £120 a few years ago.
(It was bought by a lovely eastern European chap who was driving back home with loads of stuff and he was very pleased with it, left glowing feedback. )
