I'll start.

Toothbrush heads for electric toothbrushes - just a bit of plastic!

Reprogramming keys for cars (why does it cost £100s)

Greetings cards.

Five for a pound in the discount card shops. Hardly expensive.

Those Pukka herbal teas - £4.75 a packet and I’m sure there is less in the bags than there used to be.

yet another thing that I have stopped buying.

Lifeomars · 26/09/2024 14:15

Ryvita! used to be on offer for £1 at Asda, and when not on offer for around £1.15p. Now it is inching (or centimertering !) up to nearly £2 a packet. No longer buy it, used to enjoy crispbreads and cheese for lunch but no more

Anyone mentioned dentists yet? Blows my mind how most people can afford a 5 min check up let alone a scale and polish or anything more significant.

And now you have to pay a registration fee. It includes a check up but it’s a bit if a cheek having to pay for that when all you want to do is register. It basically cost me £80 just to go on their books. (No NHS places currently available at any of the dentists I called 🤔).

Lampshades! I'm trying to find a replacement for one that fell apart recently. £25 for the most boring beige bit of wire and paper faux linen. Anything even vaguely interesting starts at about £45. Anything I actually like starts at £70.

Oir local charity shops often have lots to choose from, maybe yours do too?

Not that that explains the cost.

BigDahliaFan · 26/09/2024 17:00

Sourdough bread from our local bakery, £4.50

OP, we have switched to compatible electric toothbrush heads which cost a fraction of the price and seems to do the same job.

I bought some once on eBay and were rubbish.

Sgtmajormummy · 26/09/2024 17:24

In the “ridiculously cheap” category, why aren’t people shouting from the rooftops about the £2 single bus journeys? Available until November AFAIK.

I had a week’s holiday in the UK where I knew I’d be staying several days in each place and couldn’t justify renting a car. I was resigned to £££ trains and taxis but the bus network took me to within walking distance of everything in plenty of time.

Sgtmajormummy · 26/09/2024 17:26

Until 31st December

Nobody said dentists yet? Crazy prices.

I go to a dental practice as an NHS patient but can have private things done. A pre molar on the top row has cracked. No pain as had root canal on it 2-3 years prior. As not enough tooth exposed for NHS treatment- was given a quote for a new implant- £3100! Messaged a friend and said a new tooth or 172 bottles of gin (£18 per bottle). She replied “gin!”🤣

Sgtmajormummy · 26/09/2024 17:30

In the ridiculously expensive category: Maldon Salt.
I recoiled in horror when I saw the price!

LoveHearts69 · 26/09/2024 17:46

Rugs!

Olive Oil

Kids slides 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

Danielle9891 · 26/09/2024 17:47

Lamb. Why is it so expensive and most of it is imported. I live in Ireland and sheep are everywhere.

LoveHearts69 · 26/09/2024 17:48

Also every Christmas experience I seem to be looking at doing for my toddler. Why is everything £100+ to see Santa at a farm and who’s paying this?!

I don't think it's too bad but I buy it off Amazon, about a fiver for a 570g tub so not sure how much it is in the supermarkets!

StuckHurtDone · 26/09/2024 17:52

i used to think rugs were expensive for what they were…..BUT I then tried (and was successful!) at making my own handmade rug (twice!). they are beautiful but very time consuming and I now understand why they are so expensive!!

M2B19 · 26/09/2024 17:58

Toothpaste

All of the above plus Lurpak and also branded cereals. Big box of kelloggs honey nut flakes now over £4 wtf.

Also concert tickets seem to require you to remortgage your house these days.

I recently discovered Tesco own brand spreadable butter, not only is it cheaper, it is so much nicer!! And I’m really fussy 😁

fetchacloth · 26/09/2024 18:08

Another vote for printer cartridges. Even the compatibles are becoming ridiculously expensive.🙄

celticprincess · 26/09/2024 18:08

TickingAlongNicely · 25/09/2024 21:18

Pringles.

I’m with you on this. I only buy when ‘on offer’. That used to be when down to £1 but seems they don’t go below &1:85 these days. My kids think I’m mean.

Definitely agree with this. Needed two new lampshades for bedside lights after redecorating. In the end it was cheaper to buy two complete new lamps (with shades included), which just doesn't make any sense at all.

StrongAutumn · 26/09/2024 18:19

Eating out.

I was always very sniffy about chains and wanted to support local independents.

In recent times prices have soared and we are just not able to keep up. Even our local pubs charge a lot.

We hardly ever eat out - just eg if it's someone's birthday - but find the deals available in chains more affordable.

I feel bad for contributing to a problem but, equally, need to prioritise keeping our own household's finances in order.

Council tax being more expensive the higher you live (if in a block of flats)

This seems strange.
Might be worth checking if the price band is correct. Money saving expert has great tips on this - love Martin Lewis.

Canwedoit4 · 26/09/2024 18:20

The jump in price from junior trainers to adults - last Yr got my teens for £120 (still ridiculous)... goes up half a size and this year they are £230 🤔his foot didn't fucking double in size requiring twice the amount of materials!!! He ain't flopping round like Ronald Mcdonald with canal barges on the end of his legs .. really angered me that!
