Recurring dreams - what are yours and what do you think they mean?

I have the same dreams very often.
Mostly I dream I’m on a plane, usually going on holiday. The plane is very basic inside, like a bus and the pilot is often just sitting in front of us.
The plane never actually takes off - it just drives through the streets. I marvel at how the pilot manages to squeeze it and the wings through narrow streets, the wings tips are almost touching walls and other vehicles.
We never really reach our destination, I can sometimes be just travelling or we will head back to the airport.

I think it’s reflective of my career, ‘never quite getting off the ground’ as I’ve done the same job for 30 years.

Doss anyone else dream the same thing over and over?

I used to have "telephone dreams" where something would happen and I would need to phone someone and the phone wouldn't work. It was often a telephone box with an old dial phone and the dial didn't work. Sometimes I was at home but usually it was a dial phone.

The other night I dreamed I was desperately trying to contact my boss over Teams but the mouse pad on my laptop wouldn't work and I was trying to move the mouse to connect. I realised in the morning it was an updated version of my old telephone dream!

Presumably reflecting concerns about communication.

I often dream that I need the toilet but I either can't find one or there's a reason why I can't use it - it's too dirty, there's no door, too many people around.

I used to dream I lost my teeth all the time but I haven't in ages.

I have dreams like this, in any dream crisis, I can never dial, connect, something goes wrong.

In real life I tried to use the phone during a physical assault and I couldn't work it at all.

The toilet one is one my recurring dreams! It always means that I'm going to wake up busting for a wee! I'm hunting around for a toilet but every one I find is either missing a door, blocked up, absolutely filthy or broken.

Deliberationdivinationdesperation · 21/09/2024 18:45

I've had a few dreams over the years about losing my teeth like a pp said!

I went through a phase as a teenager where I would watch myself die in my dreams, but from a third party point of view so eg one of them I walked into the local leisure centre to where the pool was and I watched myself drown in the pool from the sidelines

itsallbowlsbaby · 21/09/2024 18:51

YY to the toilet one. My toilet anxiety dream is that I find a toilet but it's a kids one so really small and the doors are so small people can look over the top. Also the trying to contact someone, either nothing will connect or I just keep forgetting then almost jumping when I realise I've forgot to contact them again!

Poppy1999 · 21/09/2024 18:54

Heavy legs that mean I can't move away from danger quickly.
I assume it's anxiety related!

I have a dial phone one too! But mine works, I just for some reason can’t dial the number. I get half way through then forget where I am and have to keep starting again. It’s always a massive emergency so really stressful!

JohnTheRevelator · 21/09/2024 18:55

Another recurring dream that I have involves water. I'm either preparing to go swimming in a massive pool,or I'm wading through filthy, dirty swamp water, terrified that I'm going to get stuck in the mud.

I have such a similar recurring phone dream! I need to call someone urgently from a phone box but I keep pressing the wrong buttons and I get more and more panicked and frustrated.

Dweebie · 21/09/2024 18:58

Off to google the phone dream.. can’t believe it’s so common!

ButterAsADip · 21/09/2024 18:59

Mine is always I’m lost in a town/my bus isn’t coming/I know which train platform to get to but I can’t work out how to get there/the place is too busy and I miss a bus/train, the train carriage is too high/gap too big so I’m there but I can’t physically board the train, ticket machine not working and train about to leave. All that sort of thing. Also always the same town, a mixture of towns I’ve lived in but more cartoonified/imaginary.

I actually have a very good sense of direction and am always punctual so this is literally my worst nightmare and I think it’s about not knowing where the hell I’m going in life. Just started a new job I’m loving though so maybe they’ll cease!

notatinydancer · 21/09/2024 19:02

Trying to run but I can't.
Needing to walk home but it's getting dark and I'm nervous.
Moved house and I didn't want to.
Driving and brakes don't work.

All quite clear - I'm stuck going no where 😂

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 21/09/2024 19:03

I have the 'phone not working' one, the 'teeth falling out' one and the 'running through treacle' one - I think these are all manifestations of anxiety of one form or another. I also have started to have 'pregnancy' dreams (I'm in my 60's and haven't been pregnant for nearly 30 years), where I suddenly realise I'm pregnant but can't feel the baby moving, or the baby is wriggling away inside me but the bump is far too small. I once dreamed I gave birth to a weird, small doll-like child.
I think this might be caused by anxiety either about health or about my adult children. Although sometimes I know it's caused by nocturnal wind causing my stomach to writhe!

Amoregelato · 21/09/2024 19:03

How weird - I was going to post a separate thread about a dream I had last night and then this one was top of my page.

I have a recurring anxiety dream where I am generally being chased but I'm wearing a long skirt/running through sand and I can't get away. Or I'm being chased by something and I'm trying to scream for help but nothing comes out of my mouth. I quite often wake myself up screaming!

Last night I dreamt that my sister had grown patches of a silky beard. We were with family but noone else mentioned it and her husband was stroking it. In my dream I was sat there incredulously wondering why noone said anything. What does this mean???

Oh yes, I've also had the 'trying to scream' one! And the 'in trouble but can't keep my eyelids open' one - I put these down to being paralysed during sleep and my brain knowing that!

Chessfan · 21/09/2024 19:06

I had almost the same dream twice when I was 6 & it still freaks me right out, because i dont know why i was so young when i had it!

The first time, I was in a kind of medieval cobbled square, having a picnic. An old gnarled evil looking man appeared from behind an old pillar and started pulling me away, and I couldn't stop him. It was very scary.

Then I had the exact same dream, but the second time I was strong enough to escape.

Tooty78 · 21/09/2024 19:08

I stopped smoking in 1981, but for years afterwards I would dream I had started smoking again. I was sneaking around having crafty ciggies then trying to conceal the smell. It was all so vivid!

I was so ashamed, and felt that I had let everyone down who had supported me.

The relief I felt when I woke up and realised it was a dream was unbelievable!

fridaynight1 · 21/09/2024 19:10

I have the toilet dream which I think is quite common. I need to go and can’t because every single toilet I find is either dirty or has no door.

Bohemond23 · 21/09/2024 19:12

Filthy toilets
Shouting/screaming but not able to make a sound
Flying around ie being able to fly by flapping my arms
Bouncing (the worst) - hit the ground and bounce but even higher on and on and on

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 21/09/2024 19:13

My toilet anxiety dream is that I realise too late that I’ve sat on a closed lid, or that I’ve gone to the wrong toilet, it isn’t connected to the sewage system so although it looks like a toilet I’m essentially weeing into a chair.

My recurring anxiety dream is that I am traveling somewhere with my cat (she isn’t in her pet carrier). I am petrified as I know my cat is nervous traveling and will run away. And then I’m chasing after her, trying to find her.

AintNoMoneyHoneyBee · 21/09/2024 19:14

I have the recurring phone dream where I can’t dial or get connected - I once read that “electronics /radio equipment do not work in dreams” haha I don’t know if that’s true or why!!
Also have the toilet dream - usually desp for loo and the toilet is filthy and overflowing yeuch!
Main recurring dream is that I’m in a massive house but it’s mine - and I keep finding rooms I didn’t know I had - and I then become terrified that because I don’t know about them - maybe I haven’t closed the windows? I think it might relate to empty nest ?

Sidebeforeself · 21/09/2024 19:19

Oh I am so glad im not alone! I have the toilet dream, the phone dream, the teeth falling out one. Also naked at work. But I wouldn’t say Im an anxious person

I do have a dream that only appears when stressed - Im being chased by a killler whale!

My sister and I both have the suddenly discovering new rooms one! She said she read somewhere it's about feeling like you're not fully exploring your potential/using your life as you should which sounds sensible to me (we are both far off being empty nesters so I don't think it would make sense to be that in our case).

I had a car stolen about 30 years ago.

Once every few years, I dream that it's happened again. It's Vivid. I have to go and check that my car hasn't gone.

Once every several years I get the Naked In Public one. The context is always different.

Then there's the weird ones. Completely nuts. Way outside of my experience. These never recur. I do remember detail from these for years and years and years.
