Recurring dreams - what are yours and what do you think they mean?

I have the same dreams very often.
Mostly I dream I’m on a plane, usually going on holiday. The plane is very basic inside, like a bus and the pilot is often just sitting in front of us.
The plane never actually takes off - it just drives through the streets. I marvel at how the pilot manages to squeeze it and the wings through narrow streets, the wings tips are almost touching walls and other vehicles.
We never really reach our destination, I can sometimes be just travelling or we will head back to the airport.

I think it’s reflective of my career, ‘never quite getting off the ground’ as I’ve done the same job for 30 years.

Doss anyone else dream the same thing over and over?

Oh, yes, and the new rooms in the house.

TimelyIntervention · 21/09/2024 23:17

I very rarely have dreams that I remember. But as soon as I’m stressed I have one of two dreams - in fact often it’s having the dream that makes me realised I’m stressed!

One is being chased, and I can fly, but only really slowly and about six feet off the ground. So I’m having to try and pull myself along buildings and stuff to move faster. I used to have this one all the time as a child/teen. Then didn’t for about 20 years, suddenly dreamt it again a few years ago and it was like a valued but toxic friend reappearing in my life, I woke up so confused and conflicted!

Second is needing to catch a plane and everything goes wrong - can’t find suitcase, passport, delay getting to the airport, queue at security, etc etc. I normally wake up before I know for sure whether I’ve missed the plane or not.

WayDownThere · 21/09/2024 23:17

Recurring dreams I've had for years, being able to fly, always a nice dream.
Fish/aquariums there's usually something wrong with the fish/water/tanks and I'm trying to sort this out in the dream.
Basic anxiety vs wish fulfilment dreams I think.

MazeRunner · 21/09/2024 23:21

It is odd that so many people have the same type of dream, teeth falling out seems common, not finishing a project, the house one. It’s very interesting.

Another recurring dream I have is where I’m swimming in the sea or a pool and the sun is all glittery on the surface. It feels very calm, unlike the unfinished project one which made me feel abit panicked, the swimming one is nice. I dreamt I’d been to Jamaica in one dream and was swimming in the sea with my family, I’ve never been there but it felt so real, I woke up and for a split second, I thought we’d been! 😆

OkPedro · 21/09/2024 23:21

Oh I regularly had one similar to you op. Being in a plane driving through the streets never actually going anywhere! Had a dream where the plane I was in was driving up a mountain but it had legs instead of wheels 😆

I often dream that I need the toilet but I either can't find one or there's a reason why I can't use it - it's too dirty, there's no door, too many people around.

I used to dream I lost my teeth all the time but I haven't in ages.

I have the exact same toilet dreams to or I go and Allt the walls fall down.

I have a reoccurring dream of watching a plane crashing nearby, but not being able to find it. I’d love to know what it means. It’s one of the very few dreams that I can remember every single time.

I also have the one about not being able to get the right password/phone number etc.

Gosh I also have this on a recurring basis. Watching a plane fall out of the sky and crashing - the feelings of shock and horror and helplessness are very vivid.

I also have the toilet one - desperately trying to find a toilet to pee but it’s extraordinarily difficult. They’re always filthy and / or either stacked high on top of obstacles requiring some sort of Lara Croft type traverse to reach. I do mange to wee though and the relief is palpable and very real. I’m always surprised ( and obviously relieved) to wake up in a dry bed.

My dream are angst ridden. I’d love to have happy joyous dreams - does anybody?

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 21/09/2024 23:29

Drink driving and having some kind of accident

My car's brakes not working

Being at work and looking down to notice I'm wearing no shoes

The class I'm teaching being a nightmare, being so rude and naughty and chatty that I completely lose my temper and hit one of them

Trying to walk but losing the use of one or both of my legs and having to lift them with my hands

Having to drag myself up a hill to a pub or house or something and not being able to get to the top because letting go of the handrail means I fall back to the bottom

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 21/09/2024 23:30

My recurring dream is I'm sat in my car and suddenly the handbrake fails and the car starts going backwards at speed, but no matter how hard I'm pressing the brake pedal it just won't stop and I have to weave in and out of cars and stuff. The annoying thing is in my dream I can drive backwards bloody amazing. Real life I can't reverse for flaming toffee 😂

I have exactly the same including the broken teeth one that I don't seem to get regularly like I used to. I read somewhere that it meant you were worrying about money. Being older I no longer have a mortgage and although not rich I certainly don't have to worry about paying bills like when my kids were young so may be sone truth in it.

Still don't understand the toilet one though as when you find one there's always a reason you can't use it like no fully operating door🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Stars and traveling, to various systems / clusters

Miley1967 · 21/09/2024 23:38

I often have a telephone one where I desperately need to call for help but I can't dial the number or it's not connecting.
The one where I discover neglected pets dying.
One where I'm in a car and pressing the brake pedal but nothing happens.
I used to have one where my teeth are crumbling one by one, I'm desperately trying to get to a dentist but then they all start crumbling and falling out. i don't have this one as much as I used to when i was younger !

Summertimer · 21/09/2024 23:44

I was an adult before I knew what my recurring dream nightmare meant. We were discussing dreams at a family gathering and I revealed mine. Parents immediately knew it was a flashback to having pneumonia as a 2 year old. The dream was white, cold, churchlike place then sleeping on a sofa as a child and crying out to an adult sleeping in the same room. The white space was where I first felt ill and the sleeping on a sofa was because it was in winter and we didn’t have central heating so my Dad and I slept downstairs when I was ill. 1960s

Wacadu · 21/09/2024 23:48

I have one where I'm at my own funeral and my mum is always there.

Another one is just moving dots. I think there's way more to it but I can never remember it.

amispeakingintongues · 21/09/2024 23:51

I have reoccurring dreams about living or staying in numerous old houses. I can only recall one (maybe 17th century) mansion stately home from memory but there have been multiple I frequently dream about. They usually feel scary.

Vintique · 21/09/2024 23:51

Being up on a cliff or in a village (somewhere like Devon or Cornwall) and looking down on a beautiful sparkling blue sea and there are giant purple shapes moving under the water,l, like an enormous shark, or sea monsters. It’s both exhilarating and terrifying. Also many dreams about finding new rooms in the house, or houses that are built on ancient ruins and archaeological sites. Nakedness and having to go to the loo or do sexual things in public! Having murdered somebody and the police are getting closer and closer to finding the body. On reflection, maybe I’ve got a few issues in my subconscious…

buddy79 · 21/09/2024 23:53

I have had the toilet and teeth dreams, and the no brakes driving one, except in mine usually someone else is driving and I can’t make them stop it slow down - sometimes my Mum is in the car too and I am trying to protect her but the driver won’t stop.
I have a nice recurring dream about finding a house which I am somehow going to live in, it is either by a quayside, on a farm, or in a pretty city. I’ve definitely dreamt these same locations more than once - I can visualise them now - but they are not places I have ever been irl. The dreams feel very happy and calm.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 21/09/2024 23:56

I have the toilet one when I have period pains so I assume it’s because of that.

I also have the needing to go somewhere but something always comes up that I have to do first, making me later and later. I wonder what that’s all about.

For a while, I had dreams that someone close to me (different people) had murdered someone and I had to help cover it up. Then I’d be scared that we’d both get caught but I was already in too deep and had to keep helping with the cover up. I had that dream regularly for a while but I haven’t for ages now. I also wonder what that was trying to tell me!

fallenbranches · 21/09/2024 23:57

Gosh where do I start...I've had lots with the phone not working or no connection. Or I'm in a house which is mine but in reality I don't recognise it. I'm also running from room to room thinking I have closed the windows and doors but every time I go back the windows and doors are open and it's night time and I'm scared. I then try to turn light switches on but they won't work.
The worst of all is every few years I will have a series of dreams where something is grabbing me or shaking me and I actually wake up and I'm in bed knowing I've woken from the dream but the thing is still grabbing me. I can't scream but then it eventually stops then I'm fully awake.

SocksTalk · 21/09/2024 23:58

I have had the toilet one my whole life.
I think it stems from disapproval I felt as a baby/child from my mother when I went to the toilet.
I think I and many people have ended up with shame around their bodily functions.

honeyfox · 22/09/2024 00:00

I often dream about being on a night out in one of those huge pubs/hotels that have lots of different lobbies and bars and stairs etc, so I meet different groups of friends and sometimes I'm late for a wedding. Often includes a toilet element where the toilets are very busy and I can't find a free one, I assume it just means I need a wee in the night.

I've also had ones where a plane crashes or there's a tsunami near my childhood home (we're close to a beach). Absolutely terrifying.

fuzzybritches · 22/09/2024 00:04

I often dream about needing to be somewhere very important such as my wedding and not having time to get ready so basically turning up unwashed and in my pjs.

Also had lots of dreams involving losing my teeth.

Occasionally have dreams where I've done something horrific like murdered someone and I'm half aware that it's not real but also still feeling huge guilt and fear.

Regularly have toilet dreams. Just the other night I dreamt I was at my friends house and desperately needed to pee but there was a lettuce in the toilet. wtf does that mean!

I think most of mine probably boil down to anxiety in some way or another.

JohnTheRevelator · 21/09/2024 18:45

The toilet one is one my recurring dreams! It always means that I'm going to wake up busting for a wee! I'm hunting around for a toilet but every one I find is either missing a door, blocked up, absolutely filthy or broken.

My last toilet dream was I was peeing when I noticed a queue of people looking at me. A man came right up bending down to get a good view. Then he said that's very realistic isn't it

I often dream about my first boyfriend, it was a four year relationship that I ended, due to being thumped in the face. This was the only time any violence happened.

I don't have a single regret about my decision. He made my life difficult for about a year after that, stalking etc.

It's weird how I dream of him and sometimes his mother,

Same here. I went out with a guy for 2 years, who was emotionally abusive. His family were awful to me too. I still have dreams that we get back together. Turns my stomach.

I regularly dream about an ex, and I always still love him in them. It's weird when I wake up. I don't really like him and I don't think he's a good person. My most recent one a few nights ago, I did say to him- it upset me when you said... so maybe that's progress
