Recurring dreams - what are yours and what do you think they mean?

I have the same dreams very often.
Mostly I dream I’m on a plane, usually going on holiday. The plane is very basic inside, like a bus and the pilot is often just sitting in front of us.
The plane never actually takes off - it just drives through the streets. I marvel at how the pilot manages to squeeze it and the wings through narrow streets, the wings tips are almost touching walls and other vehicles.
We never really reach our destination, I can sometimes be just travelling or we will head back to the airport.

I think it’s reflective of my career, ‘never quite getting off the ground’ as I’ve done the same job for 30 years.

Doss anyone else dream the same thing over and over?

I have had the phone dream recently- in reality I was stuck in a really difficult work situation and my phone wouldn't work due to "accidental touch protection " so I suppose I'm reliving that.

Mine is packing, always packing small suitcases with a huge amount of things that mysteriously fit but there is always more to go in. I'm in a rush to leave, but I have to finish packing first.

Also more recently dreaming I've driven at full speed into a wall and waking up with a fright.

I have heard the teeth one is linked to fertility and menstrual cycles.

Littlebitpsycho · 21/09/2024 19:39

@Greekadventure I've had this dream too! Would love to know what it means

FreightTrain · 21/09/2024 19:40

Love this thread.

I also have a reoccurring dream about a plane, although in mine we are flying, but coming into land through a tunnel. I always wake up before landing.

I have the dirty toilet dream quite a lot too.

Obscure one that I have frequently but haven't seen anyone mention; I often go on holiday to Las Vegas but forget / don't get a chance to go to the casinos 😂

Finally, I have one where I can fly / hover through the air whilst holding my breath.

XenoBitch · 21/09/2024 20:55

I have the toilet one a lot too. I saw a group on Reddit where some people had made digital art about it. It seems to be very common.

I also have the ones about loose teeth. Another is my mouth keeps filling up with some sort of gum stuff, and I keep pulling it out, but more appears.

Yes, to trying to phone someone too, but I can't put the numbers in right.

Another one I have is where a huge tsunami is coming towards me. Or something huge is falling from the sky. Or I fall down some huge hole.

I regularly have dreams about going to the top of high rise buildings, and jumping off them.

One that is very regular is that I am living with my parents, but my sister is too. I keep asking her why she is there as she is married with kids. She always treats me terribly, and we end up having huge rows.

I regularly lucid dream though (it runs in the family), so when I realise I am dreaming and the dream is shite/horrible, I can shake my way into a different dream (I shake my head in my dream - sometimes I wake up, sometimes the dream changes). Or I dream up Michael Fassbender 😉

I have two (though the second I've not had for a while) - both anxiety dreams! 😁

  1. I'm trying to get public transport (usually trains), but I either miss it, I'm on the wrong platform, the train's not due for hours or I'm on the train and it's the wrong one and I end up stranded in the middle of nowhere. I have not once reached my final destination!

  2. Is the usual realisation that I haven't been to lessons/studied for my exams/done my coursework. Usually involves A-level history (which I took and got a B in!).

ETA I find dreams fascinating and often have really vivid, detailed ones (some resembling non-stop action films!).

Cutecattoes · 21/09/2024 21:04

I have different dreams but in most of them I'm walking in slow motion and literally grabbing onto things trying to pull myself along. Everything else is "normal" for dreams

Mine is always I’m lost in a town/my bus isn’t coming/I know which train platform to get to but I can’t work out how to get there/the place is too busy and I miss a bus/train, the train carriage is too high/gap too big so I’m there but I can’t physically board the train, ticket machine not working and train about to leave. All that sort of thing. Also always the same town, a mixture of towns I’ve lived in but more cartoonified/imaginary.

I actually have a very good sense of direction and am always punctual so this is literally my worst nightmare and I think it’s about not knowing where the hell I’m going in life. Just started a new job I’m loving though so maybe they’ll cease!

This is quite similar to mine! Except mine are all different places (sometimes London stations, sometimes a town I'm from, sometimes random villages).

I do find it strange how dream themes are so common - every person is so unique, yet our fears and worries all manifest in the same way.

Hmmmmamilucky · 21/09/2024 21:10

I haven’t had this one for a while come to think of it. But mine are always exam anxiety dreams - I suddenly have to do my a levels or GCSE’s again and either there is no time to revise or I don’t or can’t revise, and always knowing my life will be ruined if I don’t pass! Went to a very academic school IRL and for straight A’a but I was stressed at the time so maybe I’m reliving some kind of trauma 😂

Dressmer · 21/09/2024 21:11

Demons mainly. Sometimes it's the exorcist and other times just black shadow people. Another one is a family I've never met from the 70s. They are South American with a Spanish surname and it's always the same people gathered, really quite strange.

StEthelburgaRose · 21/09/2024 21:16

I used to dream about having to scale huge structures. I think this was about finding something overwhelming/hard to cope with.
I've also dreamed about travelling somewhere and getting lost.
I've also had the phone and toilet dreams.

Potatoesunderthebed · 21/09/2024 21:32

I have the toilet dreams and variants
My main one is that I find a toilet but it is really exposed or not connected and I’m just ultimately having a wee in public.

I’ve done quite a bit of thinking/reading around this theme and I feel like it’s about emotions and shame (for me).

This is the lines along which I think about my own dreams on this:
wee-ing is like digesting/releasing the emotional energy of the day
poo-ing a bit more related to letting go of shame
when there’s no toilet - for me it’s to do with not being able to find any way of processing my feelings
if it’s already covered in ‘shit’ and blocked - it’s often about the environment - eg I’m in a mini-culture of very stressed people or where perhaps people aren’t really owning their ‘sh*t’
conversely I once had a really healing encounter/relationship and I dreamt both of us released loads of s**t into the sewers!

I really like the dream hawk site for a bit deeper thinking on dreams and have been influenced a lot by him.

Intruiging. And a bit scary? Unless you’re a demon hunter :)

Potatoesunderthebed · 21/09/2024 21:37

Another recurring dream I have is that I’m packing for the apocalypse - ie need to run away and be self sufficient for a while due to some kind of collapse. I’m always leaving in a hurry and weighing up whether to pack more thoroughly and have what I need or just peg it!!
thanks for the thread - fun

shellyleppard · 21/09/2024 21:37

Every so often I dream of catching a bus to the stop near my grandparents. A trip I made many many times when I was a child. I can see their flat from the bus stop/road, the light is on in the front room. However when I get there noone answers the door. But I know they are home. My nan died when I was 18 and my granddad when I was 21. They hadn't lived in that flat for at least five years though

I used to have "telephone dreams" where something would happen and I would need to phone someone and the phone wouldn't work. It was often a telephone box with an old dial phone and the dial didn't work. Sometimes I was at home but usually it was a dial phone.

The other night I dreamed I was desperately trying to contact my boss over Teams but the mouse pad on my laptop wouldn't work and I was trying to move the mouse to connect. I realised in the morning it was an updated version of my old telephone dream!

Presumably reflecting concerns about communication.

Definitely. And it’s super interesting that your subconscious instals updates: “Please wait: 2024 version is being installed”

I think that’s more positive than it might seem. Even though you can no longer “ reach them” they are still there, as part of you and your experiences.

shellyleppard · 21/09/2024 21:43

@Calliopespa thank you I've never thought of it like that x

Trying to run but I can't.
Needing to walk home but it's getting dark and I'm nervous.
Moved house and I didn't want to.
Driving and brakes don't work.

All quite clear - I'm stuck going no where 😂

Well partly. The latter two are more about moving too fast/out of control aren’t they?

FacingTheWall · 21/09/2024 21:51

I have a reoccurring dream of watching a plane crashing nearby, but not being able to find it. I’d love to know what it means. It’s one of the very few dreams that I can remember every single time.

I also have the one about not being able to get the right password/phone number etc.

AuraBora · 21/09/2024 21:52

I often dream that I am back at university, but many years have passed and we are all much older (Im always with the actual, i.e. real life friends I had at uni but we will be our 30s at least). Somerimes it will be just before final exams and I haven't done any revision and am really stressed and panicking.
There are other variations on the dream as well. Sometimes it will be more about a uni houseshare, having just arrived in a huge house with loads of rooms and corridors and often one room which no-one wants as it's draughty and ghostly somehow. I'm always a bit unsettled when I wake up after that one.
Last time I had a variation of the dream where I arrived at my house share and realised I didn't have my (real life) toddler with me and I was really upset as I couldn't believe I had just left him behind..
I do think the dreams tend to happen when I'm a bit more anxious but I don't have much more insight than that.

Recently I've dreamt a lot about cheating on my husband.. and the dreams can be quite sexual. I find these dreams quite unsettling and don't understand them as I am really happy in my marriage. Maybe someone else has similar and has some thoughts on it?

When I was younger (not had one.of these for at least 10 years) I'd often dream about being trapped in a house with a large cat usually a lion and I'd be running all over the house to get away...

That’s what I’ve realised with death. Loved ones really do stay with you. You remember them so clearly and in that sense they are still “ a reality.”

They really are terrifying. Utterly terrifying.
I think they happen when I'm dehydrated. The Spanish family one, the mother has been murdered and she's trying to show me where she's hidden things. They all still sit around a table. Ugh it's really horrid. I do speak Spanish but I'm not Spanish iyswim. I don't think it means anything, just my brain being weird.

I often dream that I need the toilet but I either can't find one or there's a reason why I can't use it - it's too dirty, there's no door, too many people around.

I used to dream I lost my teeth all the time but I haven't in ages.

This is my recurring dream too

MingingTiles · 21/09/2024 22:00

I dream that I’m back at uni doing my degree again and I think “why am I doing this? I already have this degree and more advanced ones too”.

I think it’s because I’ve taken a backwards step in my work for childcare and work/life reasons and my subconscious is saying “wtf? Why are we here again?”

My sister and I both have the suddenly discovering new rooms one! She said she read somewhere it's about feeling like you're not fully exploring your potential/using your life as you should which sounds sensible to me (we are both far off being empty nesters so I don't think it would make sense to be that in our case).

I have the undiscovered rooms one too. They are always bathrooms
