Recurring dreams - what are yours and what do you think they mean?

I have the same dreams very often.
Mostly I dream I’m on a plane, usually going on holiday. The plane is very basic inside, like a bus and the pilot is often just sitting in front of us.
The plane never actually takes off - it just drives through the streets. I marvel at how the pilot manages to squeeze it and the wings through narrow streets, the wings tips are almost touching walls and other vehicles.
We never really reach our destination, I can sometimes be just travelling or we will head back to the airport.

I think it’s reflective of my career, ‘never quite getting off the ground’ as I’ve done the same job for 30 years.

Doss anyone else dream the same thing over and over?

I used to do some child minding years ago and I still occasionally dream that I forgot about a child I'm supposed to minding until a parent shows up and I can't find them.
I also often dream I'm in an elevator that's descending too fast and I can't keep my balance. It's a horrible feeling. I don't have any fear of elevators when I'm awake.

I dream that I’m back at uni doing my degree again and I think “why am I doing this? I already have this degree and more advanced ones too”.

I think it’s because I’ve taken a backwards step in my work for childcare and work/life reasons and my subconscious is saying “wtf? Why are we here again?”

I have dreams about being back in sixth form, and once the penny drops.. I keep asking my school mates why we are there as we are in our 40s.

I get this ( normally and exam or a thesis deadline and I’ve not finished) and then the relief in my waking moments that it’s all fine: I’ve already got it done/ sat/ handed in.

I used to have really vvid dreams about moving into a new house and discovering a massive wing of the house that no one knew was there. I'd get really excited and happy and run back to tell people. Sometimes they were happy too, sometimes they didn't seem to care. Then a similar recurrent dream where I went to stay in my auntie's house and found a wing of the house no one knew existed. That dream was so vivid and so frequent that i forgot the house didn't exist in real life as it was always identical in the dreams.I once started talking about it to my auntie as if it was her real house, and then remembered it was a dream.

That’s really interesting. I’ve had similar, dreaming of my parents home or our home and in the dream it has far more to it than it really does and when I discover those rooms I think why haven’t we been using them for x, y, z. I sort of concluded these dreams were about wasted opportunity or talent - capacity that has been sitting there out of sight and not in use.
But your version is more interesting as it is more about communicating the discovery and also others know about the rooms but aren’t necesssrily excited. It makes me wonder if you see into issues and possibilities more clearly than those round you?

MazeRunner · 21/09/2024 22:22

I have had the same recurring dream for a couple of years - I dream I’m back at uni and in my art class. I have one final project to do, but I haven’t started it, everyone around me is halfway through or nearly finished, the deadline is a few days away but I just can’t get started on it. I’m looking around the room trying to come up with ideas for the project, I’ll suddenly get one, but I always wake up before I start or finish it.

It doesn’t sound like much, but in the dream I’ll feel quite alone & I’ll wake up feeling abit weird. It always feels real, there’s been times where for a minute upon waking, I’d be thinking ‘did I not hand some work in or something at uni?’

I have the dream much less frequently now, thankfully, but I often wonder what my brain is trying to sort through.

Hmmmmamilucky · 21/09/2024 22:24

@XenoBitch @MingingTiles yes I have this tied in with the exam anxiety dreams posted about previously. Like I’m at school doing a levels that I haven’t revised for and I will fail, but I’m in my late 30’s…and I try to explain that I’ve already done them but no-one will listen..

I think it is “much” actually. I think it’s about life and the need to get something meaningful done before you run out of time. The art project is just to provide a sense of deadline but of course death is the ultimate deadline. I think your subconscious has something it wants you to get on with and do.

Hmmmmamilucky · 21/09/2024 22:26

@Autumnweddingguest OMG I has that exact dream. I wouldn’t say it’s recurring but I’ve had it it and then I wake up feeling a bit disappointed to be in my normal house with no hidden wings 😂

mumandmumber · 21/09/2024 22:27

I have a university/study dream too. I realise that I never actually graduated and have just not been going to lectures or attending and got on with the rest of my life and forgot to keep going.
The reality is that I graduated fine!

Another recurring dream that I have a lot and have had for 20 years, is moving back into my childhood home, but someone new still lives there/owns it, but they are away/not present, and we just take it upon ourselves to move back in… and the front door doesn’t close or lock properly.

another recurring dream is where I am going out with my first long term boyfriend again and I have to break up with him again and break his heart again…

NewspaperDoll · 21/09/2024 22:34

Flying around ie being able to fly by flapping my arms.
I have this dream too, although once I’m airborne I can glide. I always feel so happy - it’s a great dream. I think flying dreams are about moving on/changing relationships.

I’ve also had the dream about finding a hidden room in the house.

I wish I knew what that was though!😆
As I mentioned I don’t have the dream very often anymore but I used to have it a couple of times a week.

I’ve taken a career break whilst I raise my dcs ,I wasn’t particularly happy in my previous career & I’m enjoying being a sahm but
I do sometimes think about what I’ll do when I go back to work in 2/3 years time.
I’ve always wanted to do something creative or have my own creative business, I’m just not sure exactly what, so I think it may be linked to that.

Edited

I’m sure it’s something like that!

Be4thedawn · 21/09/2024 22:44

I used to have the not being able to find a clean toilet dream a lot, blamed it on festival experiences. I also can't use a phone in dreams, I think that's a thing?
I used to have recurrent dreams that I had chewing gum in my mouth and it was annoying and I couldn't get it out. Also that I'm starting out again and what house/career/partner am I going with? I'm in my 40s 😁

LeavesTrees · 21/09/2024 22:49

I dream I’m in an open top lift and the pulley system moving it up and down is a huge heavy red carpet on a roll (the type you get in carpet shops but absolutely massive) and it’s really high up above me and I’m scared it’s going to completely unwind and crush me because it’s so big.

I have no idea what it means!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 21/09/2024 22:53

I have 2.

  1. I'm going somewhere important (holiday, important work appointment etc) and either I discover I don't have my passport (going on holiday), and have a stressful time trying to get home to get it in time; or my travel plans keep being thwarted.
  2. I experience something incredible, and want to take a photo (because no-one will believe me otherwise), but I've left my camera at home. Cue stressful journey back home (maybe from abroad!) to get it in time (see passport above).
loobylou10 · 21/09/2024 22:58

Telephone dream ✅
Toilet dream ✅
Another one - I'm in a play but haven't actually rehearsed and it's the first night. I can't find my script to know what my lines are and I just end up on stage in a group scene with no idea what I'm supposed to be doing/saying.

Owly11 · 21/09/2024 22:59

I have the toilet one, the phone one, the undiscovered rooms one, the naked at work one, the climbing structures one - usually with very narrow tunnels and really steep bits; I also have a dream about discovering beautiful clothes I didn't know I had, a very persistent recurring one about forgetting Christmas and having to rush out to get presents on Xmas eve or even not being able to because it's already Xmas day and I am too late, and I used to have one a lot in childhood about being chased by people with guns. I also get the one where I am trying to shout but no voice comes out, the heavy legs one, and one where I am trying to ride a bike but it's too small. I have never had the teeth one but I do often dream of having a mouth full of gum and the more I take out the bigger it gets until I am nearly choking. I also often dream of rats/dirt/insects and of being flooded by water.

Thisbastardcomputer · 21/09/2024 22:59

I often dream about my first boyfriend, it was a four year relationship that I ended, due to being thumped in the face. This was the only time any violence happened.

I don't have a single regret about my decision. He made my life difficult for about a year after that, stalking etc.

It's weird how I dream of him and sometimes his mother,

bludots · 21/09/2024 22:59

As someone who completely stopped remembering any dreams since undergoing therapy, I'm very much convinced if it's something you're repeatedly dreaming about, then you have something unprocessed within your amygdala.

I have the recurring phone dream where I can’t dial or get connected - I once read that “electronics /radio equipment do not work in dreams” haha I don’t know if that’s true or why!!
Also have the toilet dream - usually desp for loo and the toilet is filthy and overflowing yeuch!
Main recurring dream is that I’m in a massive house but it’s mine - and I keep finding rooms I didn’t know I had - and I then become terrified that because I don’t know about them - maybe I haven’t closed the windows? I think it might relate to empty nest ?

I have the house dream! I think the rooms you don't know about represent parts of your subconscious you are hiding from. Things you are in denial about

StEthelburgaRose · 21/09/2024 23:01

Me and my friend both have the "finding a new room in the house" dream. We both wish we had bigger homes, so assume it's a wish fulfilment dream

CassieMaddox · 21/09/2024 23:01

I also have the plane dream but no idea wtf it means

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 21/09/2024 23:03

I had my main recurring dream last night. It's nice.
Sunny day and I'm on a walk in the countryside. I know it well in the dream. I'm following a river on the grassy bank, at some point the river becomes quite shallow, the path ends and the only way to continue is to wade or swim, so I do. The water is crystal clear. I pass through a small natural tunnel and as I come back into daylight I'm reaching the outskirts of a town I think. There's a beautiful cafe with a paved courtyard off to one side and I think about stopping there but I never do. Then the dream ends. Very occasionally I have someone with me in the dream and I'm showing them the way.
I've no idea what it means.

Cookerhood · 21/09/2024 23:10

OMG
Phone dream - can't get to the end of dialing the number, or keep pressing the wrong number, & having to start again
Teeth dream - teeth falling out (haven't had this one for a long time though)
Travel dream - can't get yo the airport or wherever, keep being thwarted
Maths A level dream (I didn't do maths A level). People keep telling me I have to do the exam & I keep explaining that I haven't done the course but no-one will listen to me.
It's so strange that people have similar recurring dreams.
