Help me get over being so short

BodyHate78999 · 19/09/2024 21:28

Name changed because I'm aware how ridiculous I am.
I'm 4'11 and hate it. I mean really hate it and it's taking over my life. When I was younger I played up the 'cute' which I can't do as a 40 something. I'm otherwise healthy, solvent, succsessful.... but I can't get over the 'short'. I haven't dated in years because I worry about being such a disappointment when I turn up. I'm getting a bit obsessive about it, to the point I get to client meetings etc early so I'm already sitting down.
This isn't something I can admit in real life because I'm fully aware I'm ridiculous. I'm otherwise objectively attractive but I hide away because I'm so unhappy with my height.

My mum is 4'11". She's always hated it. So much so that she lies about it. At medical exams she'll say she's 5ft. There was some mean song about short people when she was younger and it used to make her angry. I guess she got teased over it. She used to wear heels even though they hurt her. Honestly, it made me desperate to grow taller. I had no control over that, but I'd just taken on her self hate about this. In adulthood, I learned how sad it was that she felt this way. She's lovely, she's perfect, her height wouldn't feature in the top 100 amazing qualities she has.

Randy fucking Newman sang 'short people'. Ignorant and shite song.!! Yes, it was meant to be funny, no it was not.
Apparently we all misinterpreted it..

“I was surprised by the reaction,” said Newman in 2017 of the initial controversy around the song. “Because it was a hit, the song reached people who aren’t looking for irony. For them, the words mean exactly what they say. I can imagine being a short kid in junior high school. I thought about it before I let the record get out. But I thought, ‘What the hell?’ I know what I meant. The guy in that song is crazy. He was not to be believed

Tell your mum she was right to be upset, and that we people of less height have a lower centre of gravity, so less likely to fall over!

Op, have you gone? Are we helping?

BeatsAntique · 21/09/2024 04:04

Same, @anxietyaardvark, I’m 5’9 and a size 18. Didn’t help that my childhood family nickname was ‘Fairy Elephant’!

My experience is definitely that 5’4 and under is the ideal as far as men are concerned. It also seems to be true that the taller the man, the shorter the woman they prefer, but that is a bit of a weird phenomenon…

I'm 5 foot 3 and had odd people literally obsessed with my height. I imagine if you're under 5 foot it must be even worse

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 21/09/2024 09:48

People say, ‘Aren’t you short’ and I say ‘Yes’ and comment on one of their physical characteristics at random.

tinytemper66 · 21/09/2024 12:32

Children I find are the worst regarding my height. Most of them are taller than me and will mention my height on a daily basis. It gets boring after a while. I cannot use the retorts I would like to as I love my job...
I don't care about my height but the daily jibes from teenagers can be draining, especially if one is not feeling the love that day.

I'm peripatetic and go into primary and secondary schools. I find years 5 and especially 6 are the worst. They're getting cocky being the oldest in primary school and I regularly get measured up next to them. Like you say @tinytemper66 , it depends on how you're feeling that day, or even how their behaviour has been prior to their remarks.

That kind of reminds me of the recent thread where OP's DH was at a conference and some idiot who had only just met him heard his Northern Irish accent and suggested that he must be a terrorist.

DH quickly responded by loudly drawing attention to the idiot's silly combover, which soon shut him up!

This is so true tall men love short women for whatever reason 😊

user1471538283 · 25/09/2024 12:35

I'm taller than you but short too. For years I wore heels particularly at work and most people thought I was taller. I'm also blonde and I think I wasn't taken seriously.

I must somehow give off taller vibes because sometimes my bf will say that I look small that day. As if he hasn't noticed before. I do think men like petite women.

But regardless we are the height we are and so we should celebrate it!

greenwoodentablelegs · 25/09/2024 13:39

People do ask me ‘how tall are you’ to which my answer is always ‘I’m not’, then I lie and say I am the whole five foot.

@BodyHate78999 how are you doing? Did we cheer you up?

also if you are online dating then if you put your height in your profile then no one will be surprised?

janeytelly · 27/09/2024 22:37

In my experience some short men and women can be similarly chippy when it comes to their height.

The short men insist that the taller-than-them women hate them, and the short women insist that the taller-than-them men love them. It's very amusing Grin

purpleme12 · 27/09/2024 22:56

I have to say, I've never found being short helps my love life!

I know its old post but I had to comment because it s a sensitive matter.

You seem to be chippy about height about it since you seem to be so against the fact many people like short women as they are and find it a cute characteristic about it or simply not give a damn about the body lenght. And seems to think a woman cannot possibly good looking or attractive while being short and not having long legs.

Some people like long legs but isnt an important widespread preferance putting a short woman at disadvantage. The important things that makes women attractive for most men and women are mostly pretty face, being slim, good proportion, nice butt. Being short is more a neautral unimportant thing or something considered a cute detail about someone.

Im sure a woman being taller than most men would be more of a woman than being quite short since it goes against gender roles,
But who really care about height on a insane level is hetero women and being short is far more problematic for a man in dating cause it ties to gender roles.

Im OP height and understand have also dealt with a complex causing lots of suffering for something unimportant out of control until understanding there is nothing wrong with my body and life is too short to care about this silly thing as bone lenght not defining me as person.

OP is havign serious mental health issues due to her insecurity about uncontrollable body feature and some people like you imply the nonsense that her body lenght is a negative thing preventing her for being attractive. Thats disgusting.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 30/12/2024 15:21

Cute is a horrible way to describe anyone over the age of about 6, though. It implies twee and childish.

I don[t like the word cute either. But I meant in a more positive asthestically pleasant feminine way.The point was the usually is either neutral or considered a positive detail. It was just a response from someone thinking is so important for women to have long legs in order to be considered good looking or attractive which is nonsense. And also really unpleasant to be so insistent on this on a post from someone with serious mental suffering due to height complex.

johnson39 · 30/12/2024 20:38

Well I'm 5'2 and lots of men love short women that's a fact.

I am sometimes described as 'cute'

(I am short)

And yes I can't say I'm a fan of it

CatsAndDogsRule · 30/12/2024 21:08

I am 5ft. Ive actually got shorter with age. My husband is over 6 feet tall. I dislike my height when I cant reach things on shelves. Im also getting fatter so worry about looking like a rectangle. Being short means I don't carry extra weight well.

purpleme12 · 30/12/2024 21:17

Yes there is the weight thing
