So for tv show:

When the Street Lights Go On.
Really good and equally as sad.

Films …. Maybe Creep 2004, I just rewatched it all these years later. But maybe it’s not as obscure as I think.

Anyone remember an Australian children's / teens programme called Mortified? Family lived by the beach and the father had a business called something like The Knicker King.

Needmorelego · 24/09/2024 10:38

@RenoDakota I liked Mortified. It was on CBBC just a few years ago.
I liked an Australian one called The Bartons (from when I was a kid in in the late 80s).
I think the writer/director went on to become really famous.
I must Google......
Edit : Yes it was written by Jocelyn Morehouse and PJ Hogan (of Muriel's Wedding fame) !

The Monocled Mutineer - 1986 drama loosely based on the true story of a British army mutiny during WWI. Written by Alan Bleasdale and starring Paul McGann, the BBC got into a lot of hot water with the media and government because of its anti establishment story line. As a result its very rarely shown on tv, in fact I think it’s only been repeated once about 10 years ago.

here’s the BBC trailer

I remember watching that.

Think it was one of the first things I say Paul McGann in.

the corner.
American tv series in 2000.

i watched it years ago but I remember it being excellent. If iv mentioned it before in conversation noone has heard of it or watched it.
its not a light watch though!

iv copied the blurb from Wikipedia so please ignore any blue words 😳

The Corner is a 2000 HBO dramatelevision miniseries based on the nonfiction book The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood (1997) by David Simonand Ed Burns, and adapted for television by David Simon and David Mills. It premiered on HBO in the United States on April 16, 2000, and concluded its six-part run on May 21, 2000. The series was released on DVD on July 22, 2003.[1] It won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Miniseries in 2000.
The Corner chronicles the life of a family living in poverty amid the open-air drug markets of West Baltimore. "The corner" is the junction of West Fayette Street and North Monroe Street

wit.
The whole film is basically Emma Thompson in a hospital room going through treatment sometimes another person visits or a staff member comes in but it’s mostly her alone in a room. it was horrific but excellent.
Again if iv mentioned it noone I know has seen it.

Wit
Based on the 1999 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Margaret Edson, WIT features the Academy Award winning actress Emma Thompson in a movie directed by Academy award winning director Mike Nichols. Vivian Bearing is an English professor with a biting wit that educates but also alienates her students. With her teaching and life both rigidly under control, Vivian would never let down her defenses, until the day comes when they are taken don for her. Diagnosed with a devastating illness, Vivian agrees to undergo a series of procedures that are brutal, extensive, and experimental. For eight months her life must take an uncharted course. No longer a teacher, but a subject for others to study. Vivian Bearing is about to discover a fine line between life and death that can only be walked with wit.

I have never seen the series but I enjoyed the book and that incident was hugely traumatic when I was about 10!

Jack Rosenthal the writer I think.

He was, and Michael Apted was the director. Not sure who the male lead was, but the female (girl) lead was Abigail Cruttenden who Not Going Out fans will know as Anna, the subject of many of the jokes.

diddl · 17/10/2024 15:57

Just had a quick look & the male lead was in a couple of episodes of the last series of True Detective with Jodie Foster!

Think I only know of Abigail Cruttenden from Sharpe & being one of Sean Bean's ex wives!

Films-
Loser (2000)
Night shift (1982)
Lisa (1990)

Tv show-
Hebburn
My two dads

I grew up in the NE but left over 20 years ago. I was so excited when Hebburn was on, I thought I could finally stop saying ‘just outside Newcastle’ when I was asked where I was originally from, sadly no one watched it.

Amityhill · 18/10/2024 00:44

Pobol y cwm

only if you’re not welsh!

autienotnaughty · 18/10/2024 06:48

I loved it. I thought Vicky, Gervaise and Denise were fantastic characters and brilliant acting.

Im from the north (but not NE) and there were similarities to where I live. . I think it wasn't popular because at least 70% of the country couldn't relate.
