So for tv show:

When the Street Lights Go On.
Really good and equally as sad.

Films …. Maybe Creep 2004, I just rewatched it all these years later. But maybe it’s not as obscure as I think.

Film - midnight express

Ohhh that was an amazing movie. Terrifying but amazing. As was the book.

StMarieforme · 19/09/2024 21:23

Hard Sun.
Had 1 series and was never picked up for anymore. I loved it though!

Once Were Warriors

I remember that - very powerful. The central tragedy stayed with me for a long time.

Wayward Pines aaaand... Hemlock Grove.

I loved both of those!!

TV - Teachers. Not the one with Egg, this one is a comedy about six young women teachers in an American elementary school. I've never found anyone else who has seen it. It's being repeated at the moment. It's funny, but don't watch it with your DC.

Films - Rocks. A London teenager is left to look after her little brother, and her friends try to help. The girl who plays Rocks won an award, but again I don't know anyone who has seen it.

Yak in the Classroom - I saw this on TV. It is subtitled and doesn't sound promising but it is completely charming. A young city boy teacher is sent to teach in a remote mountain village in Bhutan.

@DriveInSaturday I love the way you call Andrew Lincoln "Egg" 😂.

TV - a lot of people have never heard of Third Watch.
Made by the same folks as ER (there was even a cross over episode) but shown at random o'clock on Channel 4. Six seasons but 2 only ever got released on DVD due to music copyright issues.
It was about Police, Fire and Paramedics in Manhattan. Season 3 was due to start in September 2001 but had to be delayed and plots completely changed and re-filmed and a whole new episode 1 filmed.
They set the first episode on September 10th - an ordinary sunny day where not much happens but we (the viewers) knew exactly what was coming.
It was very emotional.

Oh I really liked Third Watch ut I only caught it as you said because of the scheduling, I must go back now & check if it's on Channel 4, ER is & I dip in & out fairly regularly with my OH

Max, with John Cusack and Noah Taylor about Hitler's art teacher. Very odd.

I remember that!

With Bryan Dick & Zoe Tapper.

Think she was a barmaid?

Yes, sounds familiar. I remember it being very evocative of the time and the milieu.

I've seen Rocks! Terrific performance by the lead.

Carrie's War A lovely series, Rosalie Crutchley was wonderful as Hepzibah.

Babette's Feast Heartrending in many ways, yet somehow also manages to be life affirming.

Le retour de Martin Guerre
Jean de Florette
Manon des sources

Jean de Florette
Manon des sources

None of them are particularly obscure. They all won multiple awards (unless you mean the original Manon des Sources, which is much less known than the 1980s one). I think pretty much anyone who was old enough when they came out would have heard of them, if not seen them.

I used to really love Sommersby, the American remake of The Return of Martin Guerre.

I quite like Babette's Feast, but it's too sad to watch often. And I thought it was a reasonably good film rather than an amazing one that some of the reviews hyped it up to be. Again, I wouldn't have listed it as a film no one on a thread would have heard of. It won several awards, I think including an Oscar.

Yes

Well no more "obscure" than other things that have been mentioned such as Babette's Feast which made me think of them!

I don't remember them being at the cinema just on BBC4(?) with little fanfare.

Could be wrong though.

I also commented on the Babette's Feast nomination. I would say that all three of yours are better known in the UK than Babette's Feast. I'm too young to have seen them at the cinema so I don't know how long and widely they played, but I know my parents went to see Martin Guerre in a normal cinema (i.e. not an arthouse).
