@Sparklywhiteteeth some of us have nice 'compact' (read tiny) living rooms so there's only space between two little sofas and a bookshelf becuase with a coffee table there would be no where to walk or dc to sit with toys 🫣 have a couple of tiny end tables for drinks etc

That’s true, sorry of course if no space, it’s different, I was responding more to the post saying they liked open space. Loads of folks do. Another friend of mine does, literally we all sit round the walls in her living room, it’s quite large, with nothing in the vast majority middle of it.

Our drinks go on the floor. Or if you’re in a lucky position a little side table. She loves that look. Just shows we are all different.

I knew before I opened this thread it would be all 'grey, grey', 'grey is the new magnolia' 😂.

Meanwhile the grey trend has been over for ages - it's all about beige/neutrals now!! Which to me feels like going back to the early 2000s when I had a beige and brown bedroom and thought it was incredibly modern 😅 .

Omg, yes. 2001…. my bedroom was chocolate brown and cream. It was like sleeping inside a walnut whip ( not in a bad way) 😂

Both! I have souvenirs from everywhere I've visited! (Mostly magnets though).

Oh Jesus Christ. You sound like my husband, a semi professional knick knack hoarder.

GasPanic · 16/09/2024 15:52

Those stupid words that tell you what to do Eat Drink, Bath etc.
Giant Clocks on the wall.
Twigs in Vases.
MDF/melamine kitchen worktops. I only like decent quality ones.

GasPanic · 16/09/2024 15:54

All my walls are magnolia. If anyone asks I just say they are "faded peach" and everyone seems to be fine with it.

I think magnolia looks clean, fresh and goes really well with white skirting boards and wooden floors.

landris · 16/09/2024 16:06

Grey paint. Grey anything, to be honest.
Slippery wood floors with rugs to trip over.
Glittery shit.
Mirrored wardrobe doors.
A less than pleasant view out of the window.
Big Ben bong chime doorbell.
Chrome anywhere but door handles or taps/shower fittings.
Glass-topped coffee tables - double yuk if they have chrome legs (see above).
Big bold zig-zag patterns.
Twee frills.
Leather sofas.
Monster refrigerators.
Stone or tiled kitchen floor - dropped crockery has no chance against that.
Shiny kitchen cupboard doors.
Mega tv on the wall.

It’s funny people saying “ pine anything”. Furniture has been made out of pine for centuries as it’s so versatile. I have a pine chest of drawers that’s maybe 150 years old, it’s beautifully made.

My main hates are:
Tarmaced over front garden, or fully paved, so the whole garden has become a parking space because the owners NEED to be able to view their car out the front window at all times. I hope these people get flooded.
Teal or other strong colour accents in a beige room, as in beige front room with teal and beige rug, teal cushions, teal curtains.
Black kitchen worktops.
Shiny curtains
Sanded wood floors where you can see the grot collecting in the gaps and feel the draft through them..
Snugs. wtf is a snug?? It’s just a small living room, right??
Conservatories aka mouldy dumping grounds.
En-suites

KimberleyClark · 16/09/2024 17:04

TVs on chimney breast/over fireplaces
Generic art work that's been chosen to match the colour schemes.
Oversized sofas that are not actually comfy to sit on
Glass dining tables
Ceramic tiled floors in living areas
Too many mirrors
Vertical/Venetian blinds covering up original stained glass transoms.

JackJarvisEsq · 16/09/2024 17:09

Net curtains. Whenever I’m in England it’s all I seem to see

LateMumma · 16/09/2024 17:28

Magnolia paint
Overuse of grey
Plastic garden furniture
Those see through mats to protect carpet
Furniture too large for room
Hard floors and no rugs

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 16/09/2024 17:34

Slogans on the walls

Grey

Particularly grey velvet

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 16/09/2024 17:34

Gigantic wrought iron/transparent wall clocks.

The time is still exactly the same on a 10 inch clock as it is on a 4 foot diameter clock. What's the fascination?

Verv · 16/09/2024 17:42

Floral patterns. black ash furniture, live laugh love wine o clock blah and patterened persian style tasselled rugs, rugs in general actually.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/09/2024 17:48

I think most things can look cool if you lean into the style of the property.

That said, fake plants, WTF? I can’t get my head around them.

The people repelled by filthy toilet brushes, just put them in the dishwasher - gets them lovely and clean.
😝

Beaverbridge · 16/09/2024 17:52

I love grey. There, I've said it!!.

Is that a joke? You put your toilet brush in the dishwasher?!

battenberg8 · 16/09/2024 18:16

I dislike a lot of artwork that's popular to use in homes now, e.g...

Abstract expressionism. I just think it's ugly.
Framed art prints that are just big words - especially edgy, obscure references in pop colours.

Not keen on big, blown-up photos of members of family members on the walls.

Low-backed sofas. Actually mid-century modern designs in general.

Too many house plants.

Brown rainbows in kids' rooms.

Bean bags.

battenberg8 · 16/09/2024 18:17

I also think the whole "outdoor living" industry is an overblown scam in the UK. I mean firepits, huge outdoor dining sets, outdoor kitchens etc. There's such a short period in the year when you can use them here, and they are sooo overpriced.

I love orange pine and dado rails 😂they're so cosy

battenberg8 · 16/09/2024 18:30

As for TVs above fireplaces, to me it makes sense to put the TV wherever you won't have to strain your neck. If the sofa is in a bay window opposite a fire, makes sense to put the TV above the fireplace. If you put it in a corner, you have to sit at a weird angle to see it.
I think people are saying this because they think it's vulgar to have the TV at the centre of attention. But you can just switch it off and read a book whenever you want, and then have a comfortable neck when you are watching it.

battenberg8 · 16/09/2024 18:30

Oh I also loathe gallery walls.
