Fake flowers/ potted plants

I think decks can look nice, but often are slippery and prone to rotting.

AnneButNotHathaway · 16/09/2024 08:44

Fake flowers, wooden signs like "Live, laugh, love", grey everyfreakingwhere

Different strokes for different folks.
This is an unpleasant post and will be hurtful to some people.
Embrace how you and others decorate their homes.

I've got bingo several times over already on this thread. There are so many things in my house that other people would hate! If a lighthearted post on an anonymous forum about interior design choices is enough to be 'hurtful' it might be worth trying to develop a thicker skin.

Anyway, I'm off to sit on my grey sofa and watch the TV above the fireplace.

Our house is on a slope- without the deck, we’d have a great drop into the back garden!

My anger is probably mainly directed at our deck, specifically 😅 My parents have a lovely decking area at their house. Ours made me angry to look at, and I'm glad it's currently a log pile

Mummyratbag · 16/09/2024 08:48

Meh... I expect most people have a few of the things listed so no one should feel too bad about the thread.

I'm not a fan of the grey and I do hate plastic grass ... so very bad for the environment.

For my sins, my house is clutter, mostly off white and the flooring has been destroyed by dog and life in general. We have (non varnished) pine in places a champagne coloured bathroom which is overdue replacing and don't even get me started on my 50 year old kitchen! I'm off to work so I don't have to look at it and I can save for the (non grey) makeover ..

AutumnLeaves1990 · 16/09/2024 08:48

AstroTurf
Marbled anything
Black kitchen cupboards

UnravellingTheWorld · 16/09/2024 08:50

Admittedly I do like grey. We're putting grey carpets in all the bedrooms to make them nicer to walk on (currently awful laminate).

However our living room was grey when we moved in and that was one of the first things to go. Happy to report that we also filled in the holes above the fireplace where the previous owners had hung their tv. And we have a lovely wood burner that chucks out heat in winter.

SanMarzano · 16/09/2024 08:54

I don’t mind most things except grey walls, which have a very depressive effect on me. I used to live in a rented flat with grey walls and hardly any natural light and it was awful.

Deliiciousllydifffident · 16/09/2024 08:55

We have decking which has been there for 14 years. My DH chose the wood and laid it. It’s still as good as when it went down. It’s not slippery and there’s no rot. I love that I can step out of my kitchen and not get my feet wet or muddy.

SallyWD · 16/09/2024 08:57

When everything is very grey and minimalist with no character. Looks so soulless to me. I don't like clutter but I do like lots of beautiful things in a home. Paintings, ornaments, noce throws and cushions etc.

Moveoverdarlin · 16/09/2024 08:58

Crushed velvet
Mirrored furniture
TVs above fireplaces
Black worktops
Leather sofas
Artex ceilings
Fake grass
hot tubs
grey carpet

Media walls. Will be a short lived trend IMO.

Wigtopia · 16/09/2024 09:01

A feature wall. Edited to add glass table/ coffee table tops

That sounds great. You obviously made a good choice with the wood etc. I do think they look nice.

Oh I’m feeling nostalgic for “twigs and pebbly shit”

We live rurally and our two log burners basically heat the entire home so not entirely true about the heat they give out. 🤣

Same here, we have one which is amazing. We love it, big inglenook fireplace with the fire going on a chilly day - can’t beat it.

SquashPenguin · 16/09/2024 09:03

Chevron flooring makes me feel very uncomfortable for some reason, just go with herringbone!

'Word' art/ signs about the house, like "wash/ family/ gin o'clock/ the kitchen is for dancing" or some other hilarious quip. Lacks imagination in my opinion.

Gloss kitchens and granite worktops. They look sticky to me 😆

I'm inclined to agree with this. I think they're going to look dated very soon.

Wigtopia · 16/09/2024 09:07

CalicoPusscat · 16/09/2024 06:52

Most of my furniture is oak 😁

Don't think I'm 'guilty' of much else. I love autumn/Xmas wreaths, like a spot of crushed velvet, pretty fairy lights and am a little cluttered.

Off to google dado rails as don't know what they are.

Edited

We have dado rails but refer to them as dildo rails because we are childish.

TwistedSisters · 16/09/2024 09:08

I knew before I opened this thread it would be all 'grey, grey', 'grey is the new magnolia' 😂.

Meanwhile the grey trend has been over for ages - it's all about beige/neutrals now!! Which to me feels like going back to the early 2000s when I had a beige and brown bedroom and thought it was incredibly modern 😅 .

Deathraystare · 16/09/2024 09:11

Astroturf. White one white minimalism. That horrible orange pine - especially on the ceiling!!!

Decking - encourages rats and mice and you lose so much garden.

EasyPeelings · 16/09/2024 09:14

KateDelRick · 16/09/2024 07:06

I agree with pp about log burners. They're impractical and look so ugly. Like a metal cabinet which doesn't suit any fireplace giving out about 1°c of heat.

Goodness me! I don't know what type of log burner you've used but I've certainly never encountered one that only gives out 1°c of heat!
We wouldn't be without ours. It's only a small one, 5kw, but it's capable of heating most of our house. We barely use the central heating, except first thing in the morning in the depths of winter.

What I dislike in home decor are:
TVs on the chimney breast above a fireplace.
Grey.
Garish wallpaper.
Four poster beds.

StarSlinger · 16/09/2024 06:58

Metro tiles. They always look like public toilets.
F & B paint colours
Agas
Log burners

We inherited our log burner with our house and it's the one that was originally put in when the house was built in the late 1940s - the heat it chucks out when going is incredible, wouldn't be without it in winter! We live very rurally and I imagine it was originally the only heat source in the house before central heating , it heats up several downstairs rooms.
