"Metro tiles. They always look like public toilets.
F & B paint colours
Agas
Log burners"

Those sre all favourites for me- each to their own - my dislikes are

fake grass
Jack Vetriano prints
crushed velvet
mirrored furniture
rooms decorated in shades of porridge
lots of grey ( a little is fine)
Sparkly countertops

Taste is so subjective, I’m sure most people will have something named here.

for me, I’m not a fan of :

decking, it never is maintained right, and always looks a bit faded and gets slippy in winter.
charcoal or blue toned greys, I find it a bit cold.
purple, I just don’t like the colour.
Cheap laminate flooring, you can always tell and it always looks cold.
lack of a coffee table, just sofas pushed up against the walls and a big space in the middle of the room
coloured bedding, plain white for me.
laminate work tops. Stone always looks better, be it granite, quartz etc or real wood.
orange knotty pine.
lots of ornaments , clutter like too many books, cd’s, dvd;s etc and a display cabinet.
fridges, washing machine, dishwasher not integrated in a kitchen,
astroturf in the garden , that’s a poor show on so many levels
lack of anything personal , like family photos on the side or a couple of books out.
sparse soft furnishings , like thin flat cushions on the sofa. All matchy matchy and thought to bring a “pop” of colour to an otherwise drab sofa
cheap wallpaper from home base or b&q, with big patterns in it, like flowers or swirls. I love wallpaper but it’s got to be done right.
shiny brown leather sofas. They suck the light out the room,
curtains unless done properly, full length, luxurious, voluminous

however these are just my taste, I’m sure folks wouldn’t like much of how I chose to decorate.

People who have followed what's "in" rather than what they like.

Mismatch between the era/nature of the house (flat) and style - trying to pull off cottage aesthetics in a new built flat, covering period features with plasterboard to make it “modern”. Many things like colors and patterns are highly subjective, but that one is probably universally disastrous.

80smonster · 16/09/2024 10:17

Plastic plants/flowers
Wood panelling in crappy new build houses (you aren’t fooling anyone but yourself)
Kitchen pots with words on them: tea, coffee, bread - it’s your house - you know which sodding jar is which
Signs that say things like: Home, Love, Nevermind beware of the dog - beware of the mum/house wife
Polycotton bed linen, why would you do this to yourself?
UVPC windows (the Devils work)
Astro turf/fake grass - terrible for the environment/nature also looks like shit
Cheap vinyl/lino flooring - hideous

Mammillaria · 16/09/2024 10:17

Toilets with high cisterns - shudder

I thought I was the only one with this dislike. I can appreciate that they look lovely in a period home. However, for reasons I can't fathom, I find them terrifying! My brother and I shared one growing up and I would go to great lengths to avoid it. If I did have to use it I would avoid looking up at the cistern. We had another one in an out building that I point blank refused to enter! I used to have nightmares about being trapped in the room with it whilst water spilled over the top. Bizarre!

Baguettesandcheeseforever · 16/09/2024 10:17

I think the people commenting on fighting the style of the house are spot on. Taking the character out of a beautiful period house or trying to put it into a new build is where it goes wrong. A log burner in a big stone fireplace in an old cottage looks beautiful but standing on a raised tile area in the lounge of the latest Persimmon Homes development looks out of place.

louisianachild · 16/09/2024 10:19

Open plan
Tiled floors in living rooms
Those awful front doors with a huge arched handle
Sparkly worktops in kitchens

Same! With a light wood laminate floor and a vase of twigs in the corner. I didn't have much confidence at the time and it took me a while to find my own style in decor and clothes. I've seen Kelly Hoppen has a new collab out with M&S and I haven't even heard her name since around that time either, maybe we truly are going back!

I love colour too much to follow most trends. I know that neutrals are meant to make your home feel bigger and look clean. But I want my house to look like it belongs in a Wes Anderson film.

I had a carpet but yes I also had a vase of twigs!! Which had fairy lights intertwined through them and they stood next to a wall mounted IKEA long wavy mirror 😅 I was very proud of my bedroom 🤭.

I agree with literally evey one of these 😀. I'm also going to add 70s style artex ceilings and generic canvases (no objection to generic paintings or framed prints, but I absolutely loathe canvases!).

longtompot · 16/09/2024 10:34

Completely open plan living, kitchen, dining rooms with no separate living room which you can close a door to.

GoldenLegend · 16/09/2024 10:38

Carpets
Wallpaper
Gardens that have been turned into deserts by tarmac, concrete or pebbles

KateDelRick · 16/09/2024 10:45

I love ornaments, so most of you wouldn't like my house! Many years of gifts from children, souvenirs, nick nacks which caught my eye etc.
I love them, though I'm sure they're not chic!

Namechangeforcheese · 16/09/2024 10:45

I have magnolia walls, a log burner (very efficient) fairy lights in every ground floor room and on the terrace, crushed velvet sofas, seasonal door wreaths , big canvas prints of family and friends, a kitchen island, granite worktops. I love my house and the way it looks and feels.

I don't have any fairy lights indoors but I do like them, always think they look pretty in the evenings.

Cattery · 16/09/2024 10:58

Anything pine
Vertical blinds (reminds me of a doctors surgery)
Bling/mirrored furniture
Carpet in loo or bathroom (gross and piss stained)
Crushed velvet sofas
Beds with no headboard (shudder)
Silly cheap little slogan signs saying shit like “Mum’s Kitchen”
Toilet brush (utter filth)
Tiny ornaments (stupid dust-gathering clutter)
Big pine dresser with plates displayed (just no)
Doily mats

KateDelRick · 16/09/2024 11:04

"toilet brush - utter filth" 😂
I think you should start a thread 😅

Cattery · 16/09/2024 11:06

@KateDelRick 😍

80smonster · 16/09/2024 11:07

Coastal themes in seaside houses (raffia light fittings, turquoise walls, driftwood signs) - we know you live by the bloody seaside - we travelled here. Weirdly Londoners do not feel the need to city-themed houses: no London bus loo roll holder etc. Wonder why that is?

dutysuite · 16/09/2024 11:13

Grey interior. I also hate it when people buy a 1930/1950s house render the outside, paint the entire thing grey and replace the front door with an office style door.

Not keen on navy kitchens either.

I hate it when people use blue flashing lights outside their house during Christmas. Hurts my eyes.

KateDelRick · 16/09/2024 11:13

@80smonster I love all that, it's kitsch!

KateDelRick · 16/09/2024 11:19

@dutysuite - we had a neighbour do that to a lovely Edwardian stone detached house. They also ripped out the original kitchen and installed an orange plastic one. Awful.

CanYouHearThatNoise · 16/09/2024 11:21

The "trend" of everything grey
"Love, Laugh, Live"
Patterned carpets
Dado rails
too many ornaments
anything with frills or swags

lemans · 16/09/2024 11:25

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 16/09/2024 00:52

Grey.

^ This. Why is everything still going grey? Walls, curtains, carpets, windows, fence!
