Non-fake, stable genius thanks to @Crucible for the new thread title.

Seniors' special today.*
They’re eating the dogs!
They’re eating the cats!
They’re eating the pets!...
So do you want fries with that cat? (*Apologies to non-MAGA seniors)

In other news, the swing states continue to be too close to call and it looks like it's going to be a nail-biting, buttock-clenching, hand-wringing 50 days to the election. (or thereabouts)
Increase your anxiety with this handy countdown 😭

The Avengers have assembled to save democracy and elect Kamala Harris as our next president.

He had some mobility/frailty issues during his presidency last time. I seem to remember him having to be helped down a ramp.

When he clutched Theresa May’s hand? I remember thinking, poor woman. And about TM!

Trump on Liz Cheney: "Let's put her with a rifle standing there with 9 barrels shooting at her. Let's see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face."

The stuff that comes out of his mouth.

Remember this - something that should have buried Trump in 2016.

Trump’s ‘grab them’ comment was history. Now TikTok is showing it to young voters.

As the audio clip circulates on the popular video app, Gen Z users are expressing their shock.

This is an interesting thread on Trump's mental state and bronzer

https://x.com/alyssaleann/status/1852012281397215508

A photographer I follow on Instagram has put together that his bronzer use amps up when he’s stressed / close to an election and is tied to his days in the rise of reality tv, and it’s fascinating (More screenshots in replies)

That explains the hi viz vest. An orange face is no longer enough, the chest has to be orange too.
May I suggest a Guantanamo top to toe orange jumpsuit next?

I wholeheartedly endorse that thought

I sometimes worry for Aaron Rupar's mental state. Along with Daniel Dale, he does a public service for sure.

Warning: Rant incoming about the media and the hopeless inequity of their coverage of this election.

Biden bumbles something about Tony Hinchcliffe, cue media firestorm of recrimination, never mind the fact that Trump calls Democrats or anyone who speaks up against him (voters and politicians) garbage, scum and the enemy within on practically an hourly basis.

Trump literally says Liz Cheney should be shot in the face, presumably by firing squad, and this is the NYT Headline:

Liz Cheney's reply

This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant. #Womenwillnotbesilenced #VoteKamala

Wallaw · 01/11/2024 11:20

But the better news is that the Marist polls now have her leading in PA, MI & WI and Greg Sargent, at least, thinks they're undercounting her likely support

Good for her. It was appalling what he said and continues to say all the time. Why on earth Dems have to be held to such a ridiculously high standard compared to him I do not know

This is good news, I do love Greg but he’s dyed in the wool Dem so not entirely unbiased.

This is absolutely the crux of it. Hugely double standards. Though agreed, Biden's comments have really not helped Kamala's cause. There's going low, and then there's insulting 50% of the American population.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/11/2024 13:51

Trump supporters are not "50% of the American population". They're not even 50% of the voting population (he lost the popular vote against Clinton by 2,868,686 votes and again against Biden by 7,059,526). I'm not even sure they are 50% of the Republican registered voters, some of whom are certainly voting for him only because they dislike the alternative and some of whom are voting for the alterenative because they can't stomach Trump at any price.

I'm getting to the point where I feel like running out into the street and screaming "I can't take this anymore!" like the guy in Network. (Neighbours might be a bit 🤔 though, given that I live in the UK 😂)

We won't know for at least a further twenty-four hours, I don't suppose, and then there will be interminable recounts and legal shenanigans and the rest. I'd honestly rather get my sleep.

I say this even about UK elections, which are counted and declared far more quickly, in some places before midnight on election day and in general once for all not and not with vast amounts of objections and hoo-hah.

CaveMum · 01/11/2024 15:14

I think we’re now into squeaky bum time. It’s likely to be very tight, but we know the polls are frequently wrong these days. I guess we can hope that they’ve over-corrected from underestimating Trump to over-estimating him.

Apparently the Dems are heartened by early voter turnout in places like Pennsylvania so hoping it’s a good early sign.

Igotjelly · 01/11/2024 15:15

I think we can fully expect Trump to declare victory early on.

Spandauer · 01/11/2024 15:17

I am unlikely to stay up as the polling in CA won't close until (I think) 4am U.K. time. Plus based on the Robert Reich link I posted earlier in the thread there will be the red mirage/blue shift to contend with and I don't think my nerves will make it through the red mirage stage! But will probably set an alarm for 5am and/or wait to see if DH is pacing up and down outside the bedroom earlier than that!

It is his stated intention, after all. I think it is quite important for everyone to remember, and remember loudly and in public, that the result is not in anywhere until it has been declared by the election officials, not the perishing candidates.

I shall get up at the usual time, and find out what the World Service has to say about it all whilst I am getting dressed and having a bath.

CaveMum · 01/11/2024 15:28

It seems to be a common consensus that one reason for the Trump team to keep playing up how well he’s doing (which some speculate includes manipulating the betting markets) is so that they can turn around if (when 🤞🏻) he loses to say - “See they’ve rigged it, he was in the lead!”

BustingBaoBun · 01/11/2024 15:30

I have intermittently watched the last two US election coverages overnight. Dozing off then watching. But I plan not to do so with this one... as you said @Spandauer I don't want my hopes dashed too early on with the red mirage etc.

Also I am on some medication that seriously knocks me out... I call them magic pills and I will miss them when I finish the course as I am an insomniac.

I will undoubtedly wake early and start watching with fingers and toes crossed....
