Non-fake, stable genius thanks to @Crucible for the new thread title.

Seniors' special today.*
They’re eating the dogs!
They’re eating the cats!
They’re eating the pets!...
So do you want fries with that cat? (*Apologies to non-MAGA seniors)

In other news, the swing states continue to be too close to call and it looks like it's going to be a nail-biting, buttock-clenching, hand-wringing 50 days to the election. (or thereabouts)
Increase your anxiety with this handy countdown 😭

Choosing not to vote for two elections
is NEVER a valid reason to remove a person from the register

BustingBaoBun · 27/09/2024 05:28

So Starmer has met Trump in NY. Poor sod having to put himself through this, for the sake of international relations.
He tried to schedule a meeting with Harris as well but diaries clashed

I'm really not keen on this. If Trump is elected, then deal with him amicably. Until then, he's nothing but a grifting con man and I don't think other world leaders, or at least the ones who aren't dictators/grifting conmen themselves, should be normalising or dignifying him. You didn't see Biden coming over to meet with Count Binface in the run up to the UK election. They should be treating Trump exactly the same - actually with more disregard, I definitely rate the Count.

Talkinpeace · 27/09/2024 15:18

Count Binface had zero chance of becoming Prime Minister.

Trump has a 50% chance of becoming the next President.

Same as all the leaders chatting to Starmer at D-Day a couple of weeks before the UK election

DuncinToffee · 27/09/2024 15:20

I hope Trump didn't gift Starmer a watch, he is flogging them for $100,000.

Talkinpeace · 27/09/2024 15:29

The watches look just like the ones a Romanian bloke sells at the street market for £9.99
At least the Romanian is honest about the quality

Yes, but he's a liable for sexual abuse, convicted of 34 felony counts and tax fraud individual who instigated an insurrection in an attempt to disrupt the democratic process and prevent the peaceful transfer of power. I think as a morally right thinking country, you don't legitimise that person unless/until you need to.

I agree in normal times but we’re in such a period of global instability I think it would be foolish not to have started trying to Trump proof the UK and that includes engaging with him unfortunately.

Talkinpeace · 27/09/2024 15:41

The UK cannot afford to insult him (and his team)
while the chances of him becoming president remain so high.
He is a thin skinned thick narcissist but he is also popular with a critical mass of voters.

Wallaw · 27/09/2024 15:48

I get those perspectives, but the thing about authoritarians is that you can't Trump-proof, you can't lay groundwork. The only things that work are having more power and controlling the puppet strings or total abject and permanent fealty. That's one of the cautionary points that experts on authoritarianism like Timothy Snyder, Anne Applebaum and Ruth Ben-Ghiat have been trying to make to media and business leaders inside the US.

Sorry, that comes too close to appeasing bullies for my liking.

The UK appeases bullies all over the world shamelessly and has done for centuries
At least we do not sell arms to Trump (just buy them from his chums)

PerkingFaintly · 27/09/2024 16:32

Well it looks like the Zelensky-Trump meeting is now well over. As long as no one's tea – or underpants – were poisoned, that's that safely out of the way.

borntobequiet · 27/09/2024 16:45

But it would certainly have livened things up if he had.

DuncinToffee · 27/09/2024 18:11

PerkingFaintly · 27/09/2024 13:35

He's meeting Zelensky this morning.
(I wonder if Zelensky will wear a rubber band around his wrist to snap as a distraction when he really wants to smack Trump around the head?)

Grin

He needed that rubber band Shock

Trump, standing next to a very uncomfortable-looking Zelensky, boasts that the Ukrainian president sided with him during the "impeachment hoax."

"I will say I have had a great relationship. When they did the impeachment hoax, a Democrat hoax, which we won, but one of the reasons we won it so easily is when the president was asked – it was over a phone call with the president, and he said - he could have grandstanded and played cute, but he didn’t. He said President Trump did absolutely nothing wrong. He said it loud and clear, and the impeachment hoax died right there. He could have said well, I don’t know. And I never told you this, to be honest. But he was like a piece of steel!"

Igotjelly · 27/09/2024 18:12

The latest The Rest is Politics US episode is an interview with Doug, he’s fabulous.

My god, I have never seen a man look more uncomfortable and when Trump said how great Putin was....well....words fail me

AcrossthePond55 · 28/09/2024 00:49

Wait. He said how great Putin was in front of Zelinskyy?

I'd be gobsmacked if I didn't really consider it par for the course.

BustingBaoBun · 28/09/2024 06:47

He bangs on about his 'impeachment hoax' then calls Zelensky 'a man of steel'. This is nothing to do with the agony his country is going through but because Trump asserts that Zelensky had said 'President Trump has done nothing wrong' with regard to 'the impeachment hoax which they lost'. (At this point Zelensky is looking beyond uncomfortable)

Trump then says 'I also have a very good relationship with Putin' and 'it takes two to tango' whatever the fuck that means and 'we'll have a very good victory' (for who??) and 'we can work out something that is good for both sides'. At this point Zelensky is hating every single minute and has never worked so hard controlling his facial expressions and body language.

It's a painful watch.

BustingBaoBun · 28/09/2024 07:45

Another take on it.... from twitter...

This video of Trump lording his power over Zelensky while using him as a convenient prop to lie about his first impeachment is absolutely the most painful thing to watch that you will see today. It's painful. Zelensky has to do whatever he can to protect his people. He knows that Trump has a chance at coming into power. He has to stand there and be diplomatic, but Zelensky is a savvy player. He knows what's up. He gets visibly uncomfortable when Trump starts getting into politics, talking about the impeachment, and lying about his polling numbers. I'm cringing internally knowing he had to stand there and listen to all of this garbage and still keep a blank face. And Trump is so revealing here. He talks about having a good relationship with Putin. Why? Why do that in this situation? Trump keeps talking about a deal, but he obviously means a deal where Ukraine surrenders

SerendipityJane · 28/09/2024 09:38

A British citizen died - on British soil - so Putin could air his enormous man-testicles. For Trump to support him, and Starmer suck up to Trump isn't a good look for Britain.

Igotjelly · 28/09/2024 09:46

I wonder if the breakout of all out war in the Middle East is going to be the October surprise. Utterly depressing and I dread to think how Trump would handle it.

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2024 10:00

Netanyahu ordering an attack from New York City does seem to point towards that.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 28/09/2024 14:23

I shouldn't be surprised that a war ostensibly being waged in the name of religion intensifies on the Sabbath.

Spandauer · 28/09/2024 14:32

37 days to the election.

VP debate Tuesday, 1st October, 9pm ET will air on CBS and be live-streamed on CBS News 24/7 and Paramount Plus. The debate also will be available via simulcast on other networks. (not sure if/what U.K. access is scheduled yet)

The debate is scheduled to run for 90 minutes.

Walz has been preparing for the debate in recent weeks by participating in policy sessions and mock debates in his home state and on the road. The campaign enlisted Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, in his personal capacity, to play Vance during debate rehearsals. The campaign tapped Zayn Siddique, a lawyer who worked in the Biden White House and helped him and Harris prepare for debates, and Rob Friedlander, who previously worked on the National Economic Council, to oversee the debate prep. Current and former Obama and Biden administration officials are also engaged in the preparations.

The Post previously reported that Vance tapped Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) to help him prepare to face Walz on the debate stage. Emmer, the House majority whip, has known Walz for years.

What the debate stage will look like

Walz will stand at a lectern on stage left and Vance will be on stage right, with each candidate remaining behind their lectern throughout the debate. Walz will be introduced first by the debate moderators.

Microphones will be hot
Microphones will be live throughout the debate, but CBS News said they reserve the right to mute them.

No audience
Like the past two presidential debates this election cycle, there will be no studio audience during Tuesday’s vice-presidential debate.

Opening and closing statements

There will be no opening statement during the debate.

CBS News says the campaigns held a coin toss on Sept. 26 to allow the winner to choose the order of closing statements. Vance won and elected to go second. Each candidate will have two minutes for their closing statement.

How long candidates will have to answer questions
Candidates will have two minutes to answer a question when asked, and the opposing candidate will be allowed two minutes to respond. Each candidate will then have one minute for rebuttal statements, but CBS News says “moderators may at their discretion give candidates an additional minute each to continue a topic.” Candidates will have lights indicating how much time they have left to speak, as well as a countdown clock.

Commercial breaks

There will be two breaks during the debate, which will each last four minutes. During these breaks, campaign staff will not be permitted to interact with the candidates.

Debate prep and props
Candidates will not receive debate questions or topics in advance. They will have a pen, pad of paper and a water bottle at their respective lecterns, but otherwise will not be allowed any props or pre-written notes onstage.

Edited

I’m quite looking forward to this debate it has to be said! I think the hot mics will be less of an issue than with Trump. I don’t like Vance but he’s far more media savvy than Trump and I think can probably control himself. I expect Walz of course to be a perfect gentleman (can you tell I’m a fan girl 😂)
