Tiny disappointments in life

Dh has just put on an episode of University Challenge. It disappoints me every time that the teams aren't actually sitting one on top of the other.

It used to disappoint me that I wasn't on jim ll fix it when I used to watch it as a child (had written a letter to jim and just assumed I'd appear on the programme one day - too young to understand the concept of filming). Looking back it was a blessing in disguise.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 12/09/2024 22:53

The Young Ones did a University Challenge episode where they were on top of each other. Didn't Vivian kick through to the team below them.... that's why I think it must be bunk bed style m.

I'm disappointed at the end of August every year, when it starts getting dark noticeably earlier. I whinge about it, daily for several weeks....maybe it's more than a tiny disappointment 🤣

Me too- and I turn 51 in a week - you’d think I would’ve got over it by now.

It makes no difference. Whichever one you use... IT'S THE OTHER ONE 😡

This.

That I don't feel cool or glamorous opening my fridge. Everyone in US tv shows/books (Sweet Valley High) seemed to have amazing fridges where they would pull out cartons of juice, chatting sassily and wearing cute outfits.

I have an integrated, American style fridge now. Neatly lined up milk and juice cartons. Not even a frisson of excitement when I open the door.

I also felt the same when I finally got a locker at secondary school. A 90s UK comp locker is not the experience I saw on tv...despite my best clutching my books to my chest efforts down the corridor.

I tried to go to work on an egg once 😩 and when I tried to put a tiger in my tank, well that’s a whole different story!

Do NOT try jumping out of any windows, no matter how many energy drinks you've had.

I'm away on a 1 night business trip, I've forgotten my mascara 😭

Eating readybrek doesn't give you a glowing outline like in the old TV ads. I can still remember the disappointment 40 odd years later. 😞

Yes yes yes!!

LightDrizzle · 12/09/2024 23:25

That getting post is shit. When I was a child and my dad got lots of post I was jealous and when he said that it was almost all bills and boring stuff I thought he was just being all blasé about it.

He was right, getting post it almost invariably shit.

I missed that episode… but I have never got over the demise of “The Young Ones.”.. utterly utterly brilliant.
I also loved the spoof of “ The Famous Five”.. same production company I think.

When I went to High school and it wasn't an all singing, all dancing 1950's glamathon with Travolta at the helm 😟
I had only just got over the disappointment of not being packed off to boarding school for midnight feasts of Aunt Fanny's Victoria Sponge (or rather "Cooks") washed down with lashings of Ginger Beer.. 🤨

1980's Britain. Somewhere up North.

That when the celebrities on Desert Island Discs are allowed to choose a book and a luxury to take to the island they aren’t actually given those things by the BBC.

That The Crystal Maze was not as spontaneous as it looked, and not filmed in real time at all. The team captain saying "I think we'll have Neil playing a physical game" was scripted. Each episode took two days to film - they'd play the games on the first day, and film the close ups on the second day. It was a crushing disappointment to learn this: lots of former contestants have confirmed this in the comments on Youtube. You can get an insight into this if you look for "Crystal Maze Outtakes" on Youtube. There's one moment when a team captain is asked who will play the next game, and she says "Erm... I've forgotten."

And while Richard O'Brien went to great pains to make it look genuine, saying things like "I built the games myself, with these little hands", now we have Richard Ayoade, who does the opposite, and keeps reminding us at every turn that it's all fake. "We will edit a helmet on to your head, is that OK?"

Another London Underground disappointment: that at Stockwell station, the Northern and Victoria lines are not at right angles to each other, as they appear on the map. I hadn't learned about Harry Beck's map, and that the lines are not straight like they are shown there.

And a disappointment from when I was five years old: I remember my excitement at being told that I would win if I was the one who pinned the donkey's tail closest to the right spot, and I thought this would be really easy. Nobody said that I would be blindfolded!!!!!!! 😭

Whaaat? I didn't know that about Crystal Maze. Now I'm disappointed!

Tony’s Chocolonely.

(I am partial to some flavours but their descriptions are like something written by Willy Wonka and I often find myself wondering where certain ingredients/flavours listed are.)

Nor does Special K make you look slinky in a red swimsuit.

Isometimeswonder · 12/09/2024 23:49

Every time I open a McDonald's box and see the tragic pathetic version of the advertised photo.
Only buy one about once a year.
Same disappointment each time.

Partner sex. Hollywood shows fireworks etc and the reality is not up to the hype.

Now, my sex toy collection, OTOH... 😈

M&Ms 'brownies'. I never buy chocolate, but saw these yesterday on my way home from a dental appointment (no work needed!), so thought I'd treat myself. Never again - they're like those Revels with toffee in the middle, only slightly less chewy. Very sad :(

I am not a big m&m's fan, but those brownie ones are little balls of chewy, crunchy chocolatey heaven😋.

dutysuite · 13/09/2024 00:13

Finding out about 10 years ago that Jools' Holland’s annual Hootenanny is not filmed live. Killed it for me.

Nottogetapenny · 13/09/2024 00:14

Every time I buy a boxed cake, how different in size and looks to the picture on the box or in a magazine! Thats why I now make my own.

DadJoke · 13/09/2024 00:21

That is takes three goes to put a USB in.

echt · 13/09/2024 00:23

It's a new disappointment, probably to do with cost of living/shrinkflation, but rice paper rolls used to be lovely, now they're almost entirely shredded lettuce/wombok with very thinly sliced prawns to give the appearance of some protein.

I'm sad.
