That The Crystal Maze was not as spontaneous as it looked, and not filmed in real time at all. The team captain saying "I think we'll have Neil playing a physical game" was scripted. Each episode took two days to film - they'd play the games on the first day, and film the close ups on the second day. It was a crushing disappointment to learn this: lots of former contestants have confirmed this in the comments on Youtube. You can get an insight into this if you look for "Crystal Maze Outtakes" on Youtube. There's one moment when a team captain is asked who will play the next game, and she says "Erm... I've forgotten."
And while Richard O'Brien went to great pains to make it look genuine, saying things like "I built the games myself, with these little hands", now we have Richard Ayoade, who does the opposite, and keeps reminding us at every turn that it's all fake. "We will edit a helmet on to your head, is that OK?"
Another London Underground disappointment: that at Stockwell station, the Northern and Victoria lines are not at right angles to each other, as they appear on the map. I hadn't learned about Harry Beck's map, and that the lines are not straight like they are shown there.
And a disappointment from when I was five years old: I remember my excitement at being told that I would win if I was the one who pinned the donkey's tail closest to the right spot, and I thought this would be really easy. Nobody said that I would be blindfolded!!!!!!! ðŸ˜
