Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

MrBeast has well over 315 million subscribers.

But the problem with social media follower counts is the proliferation of bots.

No but it proves the point as people keep saying due to his number of sm followers he must be the most famous. Which is then undermined when you know Gomez has 425 million and she’s clearly not way up there.

15 / 20 years ago, I would've said Michael Jackson, but famous people who are currently around, probably
Lady Gaga / Taylor Swift ?

anon666 · 12/09/2024 19:45

I reckon it will be a Bollywood film star. 🤔

With 1.6 billion people in India alone, then other nearby countries. Or the equivalent in China.

I think that the most famous Bollywood star that I can think of is Shah Ruk Khan

FiveStoryFire · 12/09/2024 22:59

Here's the full explanation from ChatGPT:

Determining the “most famous person in the world” can depend on various factors like cultural influence, media presence, and global recognition. However, some of the most widely recognized individuals globally in recent years include:

1.	Cristiano Ronaldo – The Portuguese soccer star is one of the most followed people on social media, with a global fan base across continents due to his successful career in football and extensive endorsements.
2.	Lionel Messi – Another football icon, Messi is recognized globally, especially after his 2022 World Cup win with Argentina, making him a household name in sports.
3.	Barack Obama – As the former U.S. president, Obama has global recognition due to his political influence, media presence, and continued activism post-presidency.
4.	Taylor Swift – The American singer-songwriter has an immense global fan base, with her music, tours, and cultural impact reaching across borders.
5.	Elon Musk – As the CEO of companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and his involvement in tech and space exploration, Musk has become a globally recognized figure in business, innovation, and social media.

These individuals stand out for their influence, popularity, and global reach. Depending on different regions or contexts, one might be more famous than another, but they are all household names worldwide.

Not really. Football is popular in UK, Europe and some South American countries. Much less than half the worlds population

"I wouldn't even have put Ronaldo in the top 100, I've no interest in football and I couldn't have picked him out of a line up

Putin
Trump
Zelensky

All much more recognisable"

Go to any African, Indian, Chinese village and ask them if they know Ronaldo and you'd be hard pushed to get a no. Zelensky?! Most wouldn't know him.

African Cup of Nations?
Chinese Super League?
UAE Pro League?

All massive international competitions and leagues across the globe. Football is so widely spread and absolutely not limited to the continents you mention.

Yes, but so what? The population of the western world is not that large. At the most 1b depending on how you define western world.

I do agree though that it might be Ronaldo or some other footballer. Football is very popular in most countries and cuts across social economic divides.

Anonymouseposter · 12/09/2024 23:42

Don’t confuse respected/ admired with famous. Richard Attenborough is respected. Donald Trump is famous in that more people will recognise him. Unfortunately.

HappyThread · 12/09/2024 23:53

What about Aishwarya Rai? Probably known by most indians but maybe unlike Shahrukh Khan also by other nationals? Though I'm guessing this might have been more true about 20 years ago.

Most famous person who ever lived? Definitely Jesus. I don't think it matters that we don't know what he looked like. You can be famous without people knowing your face.

06230villefrancesurmer · 13/09/2024 01:25

Nope ya are still wrong.. The simple answer is . Yourself. .. if you really think what really matters then that's the answer... famous/infamous. pick . ?

Rottweilermummy · 13/09/2024 02:19

I'd say it's probably a footballer, Ronaldo, or Messi, Taylor swift maybe more well known than we may give credit for she is the most popular/ famous singer at the moment,

Not many Chinese or Indonesians or Africans would know who she was

You are completely wrong. Football is massive in Africa, south east Asia and India. Almost every boy especially grows up kicking a ball and following a major international team. Even in the slums.

It amazes me when people think what they know about in any way reflects what might be GLOBAL knowledge

Astounds me really.

I honestly don't think this at all! I doubt anyone in a Chinese village would know a football star

HRTQueen · 13/09/2024 08:32

In 1999 I travelled around Vietnam some places I visited few tourists went there, they lived very what we would see as very simple lives

all they wanted to talk to us about was David Beckham and Manchester United not David and Victoria it was David and Man U

and there was always a big tv somewhere and many people had mobile phones you would see a farmer in a paddy field still plowing by ox using a mobile phone

Ronaldo is even a bigger star a few years later when I went back

so yes I do believe Ronaldo will be known in even the remotest of places in many parts of the world more so that many heads of state

You realise how few Chinese don't live in cities? The Chinese don't live equally spread across China. In terms of assessing worldwide fame the knowledge of the Chinese rural population maybe more significant than the UK population, but it's relatively trivial compared to the urban population of China. West of the Hu line is 57% of China by area, and 6% by population.
