Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

No. There are thousands of different gods. Islam is Allah, it’s not the same god. Jews and Christians disagree on who Jesus Christ was. I think the ultimate same god though, Jews still waiting for him to come, Christians saying he came centuries ago and didn’t come back

As I understand it Allah is fundamentally the same God that Christians worship. They believe that Jesus was a prophet or messenger of God- if Allah is a different God then Jesus couldn't have been his messenger could he?

I'm sure there are plenty of muslims on here who can clarify this ?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 12/09/2024 18:12

So I've done some googling about Ronaldo. Could someone please let me know whether the Ronaldo being touted as the most famous person alive is Ronaldo the Brazilian footballer (who I think is retired?) or Cristiano Ronaldo the Portuguese footballer (who I think still plays so I guess more likely to be him?). And if it is C Ronaldo why are we just using his surname when that is also the name of another footballer?

Most theologians agree with @virgocatlover although a minority disagree.

How about Bill Gates? His foundation has donated billions across the world.

I don’t want to be rude, but Kate Middleton has been all over the news. It’s very hard not to know who she is/.

@Wineandcupcakes

He saw her on the news yesterday and asked me who she was.
He'd also probably walk past any of the Royals and not bat an eyelid.

Yes it’s complex. I think arguably what that article says is it all started the same but then split off. But that’s a theological discussion that is interesting but too complex for me to act like an authority.

in simple terms today we’d say it was different gods due to the way the religions differ.

This thread just demonstrates that a lot of people are completely ignorant of history, culture, politics, current affairs etc. Honestly, if you don't know who Paul McCartney is and you are an adult then you must live under a rock! My DD is 19 and she and her friends are into a wide range of music genres, all of them know who he is for sure- she even took her grandparents old Beatles albums, watched the recent archive footage which was released on Netflix, and he's frequently in the newspapers and on TV for one thing or another so how you can have gone through life without ever reading about him, seeing a TV show with him on, hearing anyone else mention him in conversation, hearing interviews on the radio with him I really don't know.

I’m sure I could name several (seemingly) “world famous” people from my community that you would never have heard of. Just because it’s a big part of your culture, it does not mean it’s everybody’s.

Christopher Biggins? Just joking! My thoughts are David Beckham, Simon Cowell, William and Harry, Beyonce, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift

It seems that people who don’t like football and people who don’t like Paul McCartney are reluctant to agree that some Footballers and McCartney are very famous. I dislike Trump more than I can say but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a very well known person. I googled a list of famous living people and didn’t know half of them. We’re trying to identify people who would be known by a wide age range in many countries.

But the poster who claimed not to know Paul McCartney was in the UK? The Beatles were famous throughout the Western world and America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. If you live in a remote place without TV and Newspapers then you won't know anybody famous- doesn't mean they aren't very famous though!

And these people in your community who are only 'seemingly' world famous, and you are sure I won't have heard of them, clearly aren't world famous!

I have zero interest in football. I would not recognise Ronaldo. But this thread has convinced me that he is, indeed, the most recognised person in the world. I retract my former answer of Trump!

quantumbutterfly · 12/09/2024 18:53

dp says Trump, closely followed by Boris Johnson 😮It's a bit like being the schoolkid who every schoolworker knows the name of.

Trump for me…been a know figure my whole life. Everyone loved him until the day he decided to run for president how strange

Err... nope, he's always been a prick.

Trump's response to 9/11 on the day:

"40 Wall Street actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan, and it was actually, before the World Trade Center, was the tallest — and then, when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second tallest. And now it’s the tallest."

(40 Wall St is one of his buildings, and incidentally, like many things he says, it wasn't true)

I definitely wouldn't say Boris Johnson is worldwide famous

He's only UK famous

Abbylikeswine · 12/09/2024 19:06

Trump is such a wanker.

But you don't have to be nice to be famous.

John Lennon was another one - singing about peace, but he could be quite nasty in real life. Cynthia lennon said that John lennon hit her

GoldenNuggets08 · 12/09/2024 19:08

I've decided the answer is Santa Claus!

IcedPurple · 12/09/2024 19:09

I tried to think of someone who every single person I know, of every generation, nationality and culture, would recognise. The only person I could come up with is Trump.

Cristiano Ronaldo probably not far behind. Messi less so.

QEll would have been up there as quite possibly the most globally famous person, but I don't think that is true for any of the current royals.

Taylor Swift is obviously extremely famous, although there are probably quite a few older people, certainly outside the English speaking world, who don't have a clue who she is.

Tom Cruise too, but I think he will be the last globally famous film star. That sort of fame doesn't really exist anymore.

BrooookeDavis · 12/09/2024 19:18

Windmillsofyourminds · 12/09/2024 11:55

Footballers have been mentioned a lot here but a great many people do not follow football, especially women. I have heard the names mentioned here but no clue what they look like.
I often hear about Taylor Swift now but would not immediately recognise her.
Older people mentioned here like Paul McCartney would not be recognised by most young people or in Asia or Africa, even if the name The Beatles is known.
I cannot imagine anyone is known worldwide by everyone, though Trump is probably the most widely known as he has such a strange look.

Womens football is the second largest sport in the country. In terms of people playing. After men's football.
