Who is the most famous person alive today?

virgocatlover · 11/09/2024 18:22

As in, well known world wide by face or name.

I would say the Queen was up there when she was alive but not sure Charles would make the top 10 now.

Trump, Putin or Elon Musk perhaps?

Obviously there are many famous Hollywood actors and singers but are any the most famous worldwide where English isn't the first language?

Difficult to say. Footballers tend to be world renowned so someone like Ronaldo or Beckham would probably be recognised by people on every continent. Certain leaders would potentially be too- Putin, Trump, Obama maybe. There will also be a handful of actors I’d imagine- Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie? Just guessing, I don’t actually know.

What does he look like?
Would you recognise him?

You know if you know.

Wineandcupcakes · 12/09/2024 13:20

To be fair more people believe in Jesus than do allah, globally, but both numbers.

. With Jesus it’s about who he was. Christian’s believing he was the son of god, Jews believing he was a Jew and not. Pretty much history says he existed either way. Allah never came to earth, but everyone knows who Allah is. Different religions all have different gods. And there is a lot of gods.

but yes, I guess as Jesus was a person it seems, then he is likely the most famous person in history, the debate obviously on who or what he was. Not that he existed.

and if Jesus is, then I guess his parents, mary and Joseph too.

That's why one of my early comments was that it's very likely to be someone you don't know.

Pop culture isn't universal. The UKs obsession with z-list celebrity doesn't in any way reflect fame.

I am not sure I get your point? k-pop also isn’t universal 😂 perhaps you just want to be a know it all Nancy x

"Cliff Richards or Richard Branston maybe?"

🤣 so famous you got both their names wrong.

Loving the poster who went to Nepal to find out if they'd heard of Paul McCartney 🤪

No I went to Nepal to do a hiking trail actually.

While there, as you do, people talk about music, and some of the locals there told me that they liked the Beatles.

What did surprise me was when I was in Indonesia, a lot of young people that I met , told me that they were superfans of Westlife.

Westlife were huge there.

You're right, of course. A hereditary head of state based on who had the biggest todger in 894AD is such a forward looking and 21st century form of government.

Very well said!

Friends of mine who come from countries where they don't have a royal family, have told me they think it's so strange that we still have one.

I've heard loads of comments like "why do you just let one family rule over you".

Etc.

I mean they are right. But trying to instigate change takes ages

Didn’t you correct them? They don’t rule as such, it’s not 1600. Did you not explain we have a democratic process and a government and opposition and how the House of Commons etc works?

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 12/09/2024 16:29

"No I went to Nepal to do a hiking trail actually.

I bet they couldn't pick Macca out of a line up. It's classic that when travelling remote places people find out your nationality and then start talking about iconic British things they've vaguely heard of (the Beatles, the royal family, London, Manchester football teams)

There is no way on earth that he's even nearly the most famous person. I've just asked 2 of my kids and they didn't have a clue. They have been to Strawberry Gardens in NYC, flown from Liverpool John Lennon airport, recognised Yellow Submarine when I just had Alexa play it - still could be smacked round the head by Paul McCartney and they wouldn't know who he was.

I was also surprised by that. Stunned the poster wrote they are right. It’s like Henry the 8th is alive and kicking, 😂

NoGwenItsABoxingDayTrifle · 12/09/2024 16:54

I would pass Elon musk in the street and not recognise him.

I'd say (unfortunately) it's probably Trump and then your standard long standing famous names..
Madonna
Cher
Brad Pitt
David Beckham
The Kardashian's
Taylor Swift

I'm easily pleased , I saw Roy walker (catchphrase) in M&S a few weeks ago and got a selfie 😂 he seemed really happy to be recognised, my husband said I was a knob for approaching him though!

Jesus christ.

Do you honestly think that people think the the UK don't have a Government?

Really? Of course everyone knows that the UK have a Government

They meant rule in this case, as "why give one family so much power over a whole country."

A lot of people think Royal familea are absolutelty ridiculous

Constitutionally Parliament only rules by permission of the King, and the King appoints the Prime Minister and approves ministerial appointments. The King gives assent to laws made by Parliament and holds a veto over decisions made by Parliament, but as has been observed by political commentators they only get to use the Royal Prerogative once.

We live under a hereditary monarchy, it's only conventions that put the veneer of democracy over it.

This thread just demonstrates that a lot of people are completely ignorant of history, culture, politics, current affairs etc. Honestly, if you don't know who Paul McCartney is and you are an adult then you must live under a rock! My DD is 19 and she and her friends are into a wide range of music genres, all of them know who he is for sure- she even took her grandparents old Beatles albums, watched the recent archive footage which was released on Netflix, and he's frequently in the newspapers and on TV for one thing or another so how you can have gone through life without ever reading about him, seeing a TV show with him on, hearing anyone else mention him in conversation, hearing interviews on the radio with him I really don't know.

Just asked my 22 year old son if he knew who Paul McCartney is and he hasn't got a clue, he shocked me the other day by asking who the hell Kate Middleton is?!?
He isn't silly, has a good job ect but has never used any form of social media so maybe that's why.
I can't think why Paul McCartney would have ever come up as a topic of conversation in our house and I also don't think it's necessary a bad thing to not care who wrote Yellow Submarine or Married into a royal family.

What on earth are you talking about. They don’t have power. They pretty much can’t do anything without an act of parliament.

I don’t want to be rude, but Kate Middleton has been all over the news. It’s very hard not to know who she is/.

What on earth are you on about. Being in a royal family is power.

Being born into the royal family, they have access to palaces, to a lot of money. They dont have to work.

We let them have power just by being born into that one family. They are not democratically elected in any way.

What do we get out of it?

Can you explain to me how a royal family is fair in this day and age

Yeah I can't understand it either.

I remember when I was about 15 I knew who Elvis Presley was.

And he was dead before I was born

I thought Christians, Muslims and Jews all believed in the same God? They just have different names for it.

No. There are thousands of different gods. Islam is Allah, it’s not the same god. Jews and Christians disagree on who Jesus Christ was. I think the ultimate same god though, Jews still waiting for him to come, Christians saying he came centuries ago and didn’t come back

Cristiano Ronaldo seems like a nice man.

I saw him talking the other day about how hard he had it as a child because his dad was a total alcoholic.

Mumlifeofboys · 12/09/2024 18:11

Maybe Catherine princess of wales? X
