Happy to see Princess Kate doing so well, but...

I'm really glad to see Kate doing so well, and I am glad she has finished chemo looking so healthy and happy. However my sister and I cannot stop laughing at the video Kensington Palace have just released.

We think the video has a striking resemblance to the Twilight films, only warm toned and shorter.

Narration - check
Holding hands while lying down in a meadow - check
Tree climbing - check
Stacks of logs - check
Dramatic sweeping shots of trees - check

I was waiting for William to say something really cringy while giving Kate a piggy back ride.

I remember catching him on the news a few years ago and he was on about enjoying a takeaway curry and the interviewer said something like do you go out and get it and he responded with no someone does it for us - hard old life!

Is that really substantially different to Joe Public getting their takeaway delivered?

You'd be whinging if he was seen down the Chinese or the chippy with his security in tow!

I don't see any reason to compare her treatment to the treatment that other cancer sufferers receive. It's pointless. Her privilege is just a fact of life that can't be changed! It's irrelevant

Cancer is a leveller though. Any sufferer is faced with their own mortality, privileged or not. And William and Kate will face the same uncertainty about their future as any other couple in similar circumstances, and feel the same dread of it coming back. No amount of money changes that.

I like the idea of the video. I love the affection and intimacy of it, and I think the emotions are genuine, I do think it's been done in a bit of a cringey way.

I agree that cancer is dreadful whatever your status in life. And to face that diagnosis and treatment when you have three young children must be utterly terrifyingly whoever you are.

However, Catherine is not a private figure. The only reason we are watching this film is because of her public role.

So I agree with Lolawasashowgirl’s eloquent post.

The video is I’m afraid rather tone deaf. Especially imho when Catherine talks about loving and being loved. Which is delightful for her of course and we are pleased on her behalf. But so many cancer patients are elderly and go through treatment alone that I am afraid I winced rather when she said it.

Wineandcupcakes · 13/09/2024 20:32

I think when the palace was managing harry;s pr and image, he was more likeable than William, more relatable; the cheeky chappy v the serious and stuffy older brother,
but that changed. When Harry left and we started to see the real Harry, when the palace stopped managing his image,, then William became way more likeable than Harry. It would be very odd I feel to like Harry now, as doing so would be condoning his shitty behaviour to his family, his dishonesty, all of it.

I'd love to know how all these brown nosers would react if Harry and Meghan came out with a video like this. Talk about having a happy life so not understanding the hatred, yet this is the same people who call then out for everything.

If Meghan had had serious surgery followed by chemo, then I would view it in the same way as I do this one. However M would never present it in the way that Kate did - it would have to be full of drama, hyperbole and "look at me"!

Still cringey though.

That’s so so harsh and utterly unacceptable, it’s so wrong to decide that Catherine cannot talk about th4 love she has with her family due to elderly people. I mean cmon that’s bloody low and you’d have to have real issues to think she can’t talk about that.

😱

"illiam and Catherine aren't hawking the lives of their family for cold, hard, cash"

They aren't, because they don't need to - they never need to make any effort because it's all handed to them on a plate. They spend our money on jewels and art that we have no access to, and wanky self-indulgent short films about how perfect their lives are, and there's nothing we can do about it.

Harry and Meghan didn't need to either. That was a choice they consciously made.

I'm glad we can do nothing about it. I don't want to do anything about it.

HamSad · 13/09/2024 20:35

So she can't share her personal experience with the world (who's been scrutinising and hypothesising about her all these months), because it's not the same as that of others less fortunate?

Wineandcupcakes · 13/09/2024 20:36

Runnerinthenight · 13/09/2024 20:25

Where did you achieve your qualification in child psychology then?

Plus you have only ever seen him in public - how can you tell ffs?

I think George did look shy when little, but has clearly grown out of that, any one can see that. Yes as a little boy he looked quite shy but clearly not now.

I know that ffs. I don't give a shit. Neither would anyone in the public eye "cross the road" for me. I don't expect, or need them to. I've plenty of real people I actually like and love who would do.

Silly thing to say!

Sadly I agree with this.

some folks are so obsessed with the pound a year they pay to the monarchy they think everything they do is paid for by that pound. The cost of thay video will have come out of their private income from th4 duchy of Cornwall, so folks can calm down, yer pound wasn’t spent on it.

It was the genuine sentiment I felt when watching the video. My thoughts went to the elderly people I know going through chemo by themselves without any family help and with very limited resources.

I felt that some thought should have been spared for them. Sorry if you find that unacceptable and low. But I think we should care more about some of the most vulnerable people in society.

You can say well this was an entirely personal video and the sentiments in it were genuine. I would agree with that. But equally, I don’t think that, as a member of the RF, you can ever entirely forget your public role. If that comes across as overly harsh then I apologise but I stand by it.

CurlewKate · 13/09/2024 20:58

@Runnerinthenight really-it's nothing to get so excited about. No, I am not qualified, but I did have a very anxious boy child, and I feel I recognise the look. Incidentally- I don't think being anxious is anything to be ashamed of. Sounds as if you do.

She can share it yes, but I think as a senior member of the RF, you have to keep some awareness for your subjects while doing so.

The woman has just been through surgery and chemo and I think she's entitled to be glad and happy to be through the other side. I think she can be allowed that without having to think of others. Life isn't fair. I lost my own mother way too soon to cancer. That has no relevance whatsoever though to the PoW.

Who's "excited"? I just don't think you have any grounds for your comment.

I don't know why you think I think "being anxious is anything to be ashamed of"! That's quite the reach. I suffer from anxiety and I am not one bit ashamed of it - why would I be?

She can be happy and glad and make private family videos all about herself and be as self indulgent as she likes after what she's been through. If she wants to put a video out to the public, which she's able to do because of her role, then she should remember her role when doing it.

Agreed. She can keep her private sentiments private, but she is meant to serve a public role, and nothing about that video was for public benefit.

I think Catherine and William would actually, they seem decent kind people who treat people with manners and respect unlike some I could mention.
