What do you think happens after you die ?

I’m waiting on “you’ll be dead and that’s that“ 🤣
but genuinely curious as to what everyone else thinks happens , I know it’ll be like before you were born , you won’t know but what if after life/recantation is a thing ? I’ve come to terms with the fact tomorrow isn’t promised but what if there’s afterlife and we get born into a horrible abusive family ? In that case I think I’d rather just be nothing ? What you all think ? Love to read these threads thought I’d make one myself 😆

I'm an atheist so I think nothing happens.

Arlanymor · 08/09/2024 15:47

I’m an almost humanist - in that I don’t have a religion, I believe in science. But I also believe that there is science we haven’t got to the bottom of yet - for example, the afterlife. If energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed, then something has to happen to our life force (for want of a better term). I think we all go back to one big melting pot of energy, I just haven’t decided if we then get regenerated according to Buddhist philosophy or we just become part of the universe’s cosmos/compost!

I am not scared at all of dying, never have been, not in a fatalistic way of my ‘number being up’ but because I am on an intentional path of personal development and I can’t be intentional about my place or time or manner of death. I can do things to make myself healthier, I can reduce risk, but I cannot ever stop what is inevitable for all of us. I think seeing my Nana in the Chapel of Rest when I was 17 helped - she didn’t look like her at all as she’d been glued together - so much so that even at that age I realised that her soul/energy had gone and what was left behind was just flesh.

Circumferences · 08/09/2024 15:48

Something vague like your energy lives on, but in a completely different plane that we couldn't ever understand with our human brains.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/09/2024 15:49

I genuinely think nothing happens too. I don't believe in a 'soul' or similar, so at brain death everything that makes us what we were vanishes.

Hoglet70 · 08/09/2024 15:52

I think if you are reincarnated into another family you wont have a clue it's happened so you'll just get on with it.

I think it's like going to sleep.

ButterAsADip · 08/09/2024 15:52

I love these questions

I think it’s just like before you were born too. But the I’m also pretty sure DS2 has been here before, so no idea how that works!

I saw something the other day where a man presented to hospital with headaches and they found his brain was totally absent except for about a centimeter around the whole perimeter. So he had the outside of his brain and nothing inside. No symptoms, normal job, family etc. So now people are like, where the fuck is our mind kept then? Where is the soul?? We’ll never know.

BatFacedGirlll · 08/09/2024 15:54

I agree with Mark Twain

'do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it'

LaurieFairyCake · 08/09/2024 15:54

I believe in the Jungian idea of universal consciousness

And as a Christian that fits in with what I think, no individually but one consciousness (with God)

I know there is a soul and believe we live on. I had a bereavement last week of someone very close (I've now been with 6 people who have died) and I'm always struck by how they look after death. Just like a vessel, the essence of them (the soul) has gone.

DrSavaage · 08/09/2024 15:55

Nothing, I expect to be cremated and hope my ashes are spread somewhere I love - no roses/plants to look after.

Wishiwas24again · 08/09/2024 15:56

When I die , I hope all the pain goes away , be it mental or physical, other than that I don’t need anything else .

OverShrinkerThinker · 08/09/2024 15:56

I believe we will be reunited with our loved ones and our pets, it's a huge source of comfort to me

CoastalCalm · 08/09/2024 15:58

Nothing it would be like being put out for an operation but never waking up

stickygotstuck · 08/09/2024 15:58

Nothing at all, hopefully.

I shall qualify that by saying "nothing that I will be aware of'. Nothing would be the ideal outcome. Continue to exist in the material world as some non-conscious form of energy would be just about acceptable.
However, I'd be very, very pissed of if there is a heaven, or a hell or if I were reincarnated (yes, even unaware).

Ella2001 · 08/09/2024 15:58

Love reading all these answers! I love the idea of being reunited with loved ones too that also gives me comfort , the only reason I fear death is cause I have a child, I would want her to become an adult and have her life sorted first !

I'm a Christian and believe at death I will sleep until the Lord Jesus returns, at which point I will be resurrected into an immortal body.

Vanderpumpblues981 · 08/09/2024 16:03

I'm hoping for nothing. I haven't got the energy for another life and as much as I'd love to see my loved ones again I wouldn't want to be with them for all eternity. My mum and dad drive me potty after an hour!

Just nothing, same as before we were alive will do for me. I certainly don't want to meet a god of any sort. I'd have some hard questions for them, it would end in a huge argument.

What does that all mean? Where's Jesus now and what's an immortal body?

Doggymummar · 08/09/2024 16:05

Worms eat you, but you won't know about it.

DrinkElephants · 08/09/2024 16:05

SaffronsMadAboutMe · 08/09/2024 16:07

Nothing

The same as before you were born.

I am not a Christian but basically the bible suggests that there will be a second coming of jesus or basically armegeddon in revelations. That describes the destruction of the wicked and some people belive then jesus will come back and rule heaven or earth depends on Christian belief and that you will live forever

Daltonbear1 · 08/09/2024 16:09

The bible never bad hell in it at all that was a concept from Catholic church etc so it spoke about hades but that just means death .
