What do you think happens after you die ?

I’m waiting on “you’ll be dead and that’s that“ 🤣
but genuinely curious as to what everyone else thinks happens , I know it’ll be like before you were born , you won’t know but what if after life/recantation is a thing ? I’ve come to terms with the fact tomorrow isn’t promised but what if there’s afterlife and we get born into a horrible abusive family ? In that case I think I’d rather just be nothing ? What you all think ? Love to read these threads thought I’d make one myself 😆

Same thing that happened before you were born

Westfacing · 08/09/2024 16:16

I assume when I die that will be it - I'll be dead and unaware of life, just as before I was born.

I'd love to genuinely believe that I'll be re-united with my late parents, or much later with my sons and grandchildren, but I don't.

My ex-husband has recently died so death is currently in the air so to speak; I'm sad that he died aged 72 but he's gone and one day I will be too.

alreadymisssummer · 08/09/2024 16:20

I was very sick a couple of years back and was unconscious and would have potentially died if I hadn't been treated, I was given a blood transfusion and underwent an operation and then woke up and that's made me realise there is a state of complete unconsciousness where there's absolutely nothing, time stands still and you have no awareness at all, I believe death to be this but you never regain any consciousness.
You don't know anything about it.

I also watched my very elderly grandmother die, first she lost most of her mobility and her body slowly shut down, her mind started to slowly deteriorate and dementia set in slowly with loss of sense, memory loss and confusion until a point she was barely aware of her existence, she didn't recognise her family and had no idea she was no longer in her own home, eventually she went to sleep and to be honest you could tell she had no idea and would have no idea if she'd 'gone on somewhere' her body and mind was worn out, her personality gone and she just ceased to exist.
She died in my mums arms, peacefully in her sleep she just took her last breath. Absolutely none the wiser.

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 08/09/2024 16:21

I don't think anything happens.
Anecdotally I haemorrhaged so much giving birth I lost consciousness and my heart stopped. I said to my husband, OK I'm going now, and then knew nothing until I woke up after surgery. I find it hard to believe there would be a difference if they hadn't restarted my heart.

I am mainstream christianity. So it is either Heaven or hell. Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear or if I rained on atheists parades

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/09/2024 15:49

I genuinely think nothing happens too. I don't believe in a 'soul' or similar, so at brain death everything that makes us what we were vanishes.

Yes this. Nada. The end.

ginasevern · 08/09/2024 16:26

I believe that all animal and plant life on earth is connected through a shared energy (the Force if you like!) and I think our energy is recycled. Although I do not believe in reincarnation. I guess my beliefs, such as they are, align more with paganism than anything else.

Unless you're the Pope, I think everyone here will be able to cope with your opinion? 😳

Why on earth do you think your opinion has the power to rain on anyone's parade?

blahblahblah24 · 08/09/2024 16:27

I believe that you cease to exist. Life and consciousness is within the body and brain and when that ends so do you. There is no separate soul. You won't know any different anyway as you won't be in existence. I guess it's comforting to believe there is something else and I used to, but I don't anymore. I also think a lot of religion is based on fear as death is scary for most. It's made me appreciate what I have more in this life anyway.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/09/2024 16:27

You are welcome to have your own viewpoint. To disagree doesn't mean you have rained on atheists' parades, it simply means you hold one conviction and I hold another. Curious why you are so confrontational here.

Vettrianofan · 08/09/2024 16:28

Circumferences · 08/09/2024 15:48

Something vague like your energy lives on, but in a completely different plane that we couldn't ever understand with our human brains.

Hopefully not Ryan Air or Easyjet🤣

Fancy having the arrogance to think that your opinion is the final word on what happens after death 😂

ncforcatquestion · 08/09/2024 16:30

It's strange to think about. Do you think all the land will still be owned and everyone will have to work ? What would life look like without that

Tomorrowisyesterday · 08/09/2024 16:31

I believe there is a heaven, probably not anything like humans imagine though.

I believe that to be the first form of laws when they would put the fear of god in people to make them comply, threatening them with going to hell if they sin and going to heaven if they behave.
This was instilled in people so they followed and lived by the teachings.

I think most religion is based on fear of misbehaving in the ‘here’ with the death bit being the ‘and if you didn’t behave in the here when you were alive well then it’s coming for you after!’

I don't know why you are being so hostile in your post - people are saying what they think happens.

No parades to be rained on, just different beliefs.

Interestingly the bible never mentioned hell ut mentioned hades which meant death but not hell. The concept of hell came much later on by church and was man made not put in the bible if of course you believe it to be inspired by god. In the bible it just says you go back to the ground so a lot of misconceptions

SocksShmocks · 08/09/2024 16:37

LaurieFairyCake · 08/09/2024 15:54

I believe in the Jungian idea of universal consciousness

And as a Christian that fits in with what I think, no individually but one consciousness (with God)

I know there is a soul and believe we live on. I had a bereavement last week of someone very close (I've now been with 6 people who have died) and I'm always struck by how they look after death. Just like a vessel, the essence of them (the soul) has gone.

I’ve never seen a dead body but my mum has said the same - that the person has gone / the body is empty.

Personally I think there’s nothing after life. The same as before I was born or when I’ve had a general anaesthetic and had no awareness at all (not like being asleep).

Yes of course people could not read etc so it was a way of controlling people the catholics burnt and tortured the guy that put the bible into English I believe as they didn’t want the peasants knowing the stuff and gain8ng knowledge to know a lot of it is rubbish. Yes Jesus existed we do know that historically but where gre he was son of god make your own mind up

Joolsin · 08/09/2024 16:39

I think that every atom in your body lives on, but in a different form, whether that be rotting in the ground, being burnt to ashes or eaten by worms or whatever. So it that sense, I suppose we all do have eternal life, just not in the biblical sense.

Read the book of Revelation - the last one. It explains the whole end for some( when and where) and the new eternal beginning for others - also when and where.

FindingMeno · 08/09/2024 16:40

I absolutely believe in the soul and some form of consciousness, possibly eventual reincarnation after death.
I believe at first the soul wanders a little, wanting to make sense of the transition from life to death. Beyond that state is the mystery.
We aren't supposed to know what exactly. It's beyond our understanding.
But I don't believe our physical death of our current body is the end.
It's enormously comforting.

somereallyniceadvice · 08/09/2024 16:40

Actually for whoever is interested in all of this , the BSF , Bible study fellowship is starting a whole year online course on Revelation. It will cover all of it.

Did you mean for this to be funny? Or to start a fight? It strikes me as a very odd response.

I wouldn’t expect my opinion that there’s nothing after death to rain on anyone else’s parade - you can still believe whatever you like, I don’t make the rules. And your opinion that there’s a literal heaven and hell doesn’t rain on my parade either and for the same reasons.
