Keir Starmer "not naming my children"

Respect his stance not to allow pictures of his kids, fair enough, that is the decision he and his wife have made.

But the whole "i'm not publicly naming them" - you'd think as a former lawyer he'd know birth records are public record and anyone can find out in 30 seconds? So not the big secret he thinks it is?

Well it obviously doesn’t go with the job…..because he hasn’t done it….and likely won’t

Sunak didn’t so clearly it doesn’t go with the job.

@Whitetowelss do you have a link to that video, please?

I just found this:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/video/keir-starmer/video-3097315/Video-Sir-Keir-Starmer-mixes-childrens-genders-Sky-News-interview.html

He clearly just misspoke. If he meant to say he had two boys he wouldn't have said it separately like that, it would have been something like "I've got two boys, one 15 and one 13". People are being very silly about it.

Video: Sir Keir Starmer mixes up children's genders in Sky News interview | Daily Mail Online

Sir Keir Starmer inadvertently referred to having two sons during a Sky News interview, instead of mentioning both his son and daughter.

Have we heard from Starmer’s parents yet on the WFA and how they are going to cope as ex toolmaker and a nurse?

I think they’re dead.

Araminta1003 · 09/09/2024 11:12

Ah poor Sir Keir, that is difficult. Maybe he did not have a personal sounding board to realise what it is like for pensioners before signing up to the WFA then?

CurlewKate · 09/09/2024 11:13

@Araminta1003 They're dead.

As a pensioner I’d have told him to go for it, we don’t need it.

Who is your comment aimed at?

He was being filmed when he said he had two sons; you can watch it.

So if the comment was aimed at me, then, no, I am not confused…

Don't be silly. He has previously and since said he has a son and a daughter. I know some people on MN now think he has a trans child but the only "evidence" for this is one instance of him saying he has two sons. I have slipped up so many times over the years, given the wrong birthdate for my DC and all sorts. I am very sure you also have said the wrong thing at times.

Nice one. Sounds like KS isn't the only one who makes mistakes in things he says.

Both his parents are dead

He'll be able to 'consult' his FIL who he often sees on a Friday night

What a load of rubbish. Several PMs kept their offspring out of the limelight. John Major for example. Can you name his children without looking them up?
Major was very good at keeping his private life private, as we found out years later.

Edited

I am totally supportive of Starmer’s stance on this but Major’s kids were not anonymous. They were called James and Elizabeth. They didn’t get anywhere near the scrutiny the Blair kids did but they were both featured in the media. James married Emma Noble, a glamour model at the time, and their wedding was in Hello

I honestly don't remember them being mentioned much whilst Major was PM. I had to look up their names.

BorisJohnsonsPhysique · 09/09/2024 11:47

They had ‘public’ profiles though. As I said, nothing like the coverage that the poor Blair kids endured, and the marriage was long after Major had left office. At no point obviously did Major push them forward, but they were old enough that their lives were covered when they did things that might interest people.

And anyone around in the 90s will remember how much Mark and Carol Thatcher were featured in the news. But they were both adults by then, and courted attention.

I'm guessing he wasn't a child at the point his wedding was sold to a magazine.

BorisJohnsonsPhysique · 09/09/2024 15:26

No, exactly. As I said it was after Major was PM. But obviously the only reason anyone was interested was that he had once been the PM's son and was marrying someone slightly unlikely!

Desperatetomotivate · 09/09/2024 17:49

Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe have never named their children but do a weekly podcast about them, sure people could find out if they wanted to but the point is they don’t need to support it. If we don’t need to know their children’s names even when it’s a major part of their work why should we need to know Keir Starmers? Just because we CAN do something doesn’t mean we should or need to.

Foxesandsquirrels · 09/09/2024 18:22

His daughter is at my daughter's school and it's widely known who they are in our part of London, but I do think the era of prime ministers posing outside downing street with their kids is over.

Of all the things he has done/is doing, this is the least of our worries 😩

well I’m not mad about the private school thing but what’s worrying you, given the track record of the last government?

Respect his stance not to allow pictures of his kids, fair enough, that is the decision he and his wife have made.

But the whole "i'm not publicly naming them" - you'd think as a former lawyer he'd know birth records are public record and anyone can find out in 30 seconds? So not the big secret he thinks it is?

Seriously?? The country is on its arse, some pensioners will freeze to death this winter, we are all going to be facing substantial tax hikes...and you're bothered about Keir Starmer's kids names??? Unbelievable.

Not all pensioners are so lucky as you. Even those just over the ridiculously low Pension Credit level are living in poverty. Pensioner poverty is a real thing. But you're 'all right Jack' so clearly you don't give a minutes thought to those -especially the over 80s- who will suffer great hardship fue to Starmer's cuts. You are unbelievable. Thatcher would have been proud of you.

I don't recall anyone asking Johnson to name all of his children 😂

The level at which it cuts off is too low, the principle is fine. Thatcher would have loathed me.

Ineffable23 · 08/09/2024 09:46

Can you? I haven't managed to find free digitised birth records that go beyond 1998, on https://www.freebmd.org.uk/

I thought you had to go to a record office for anything newer than that?

It’s 2007. That website is run by volunteers and they’ve only got up to 1998 so far.

However, I don’t think Keir’s children are as old as 15 are they?

Well if you need to know that desperately, look em up.

Most people wouldn't care less what type, names, how many children any politician has.

cryinglaughing · 09/09/2024 20:20

@Sharptonguedwoman pretty much everything so far.
