Keir Starmer "not naming my children"

Misthios · 08/09/2024 09:35

Respect his stance not to allow pictures of his kids, fair enough, that is the decision he and his wife have made.

But the whole "i'm not publicly naming them" - you'd think as a former lawyer he'd know birth records are public record and anyone can find out in 30 seconds? So not the big secret he thinks it is?

What was your point then?

Sigh.

Blossomtoes said: "Do we usually know politicians’ children’s names? We saw Jeremy Hunt’s three when they moved out of Downing Street but I’m pretty sure they’ve never been named. I don’t think Sunak’s have either"

You replied: "Sunak's daughters have been named in multiple publications"

I said in response: "Sunak has been happy to refer to his daughters in his campaigning (although not named them)".

So. Like Starmer, Sunak seems to prefer not to mention his children by name when referring to them.

Do you see the connection?

(Eta:I am sure you are now busy searching for a link to prove me wrong!)

obsessedwithfreshbread · 08/09/2024 15:37

You could find the names they were assigned at birth, it's not necessarily the names they now use/identify with.
They didn't choose to be in the spotlight and are navigating an increasingly confusing landscape, so it's their right to only be public if they choose to be

That's not the point you were making - you implied that it was ok for the media to name Sunak's children because he was 'happy to refer to his daughters in his campaigning'.

Are you sure his children attend the same secondary school? His daughter has better selection of schools - I would have chosen one of the two highly regarded girls' comprehensive schools within striking distance or the super-selective grammar in the next borough.

Do you know them or are you stalking them?Shock

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2024 15:42

The Sunak's were happy to use their daughters names, that was their choice.

Not sure why it is a problem that the Starmer's have chosen differently.

Can anyone name Truss's children? Why would you want to?

Left-leaning publications seem to think their readers care:

Pizza nights and sleepovers? How Liz Truss's children may cope with life at No 10.

I don't know whether or not Sunak is happy for his daughter's names to be used in the media. Has he ever expressed a preference? I don't actually remember them being named anywhere though, tbh.

Anyway. Starmer doesn't want his children to be named. I think that is fine and understandable, regardless of the approach Sunak chose to take iro his daughters.

@Ineffable23 - GRO Indexes are free to access and much more up to date. This is the official site where you could order copy birth certificates, death certificates etc.

Why would you bother to start a thread to talk about this? He's trying to protect his children & you're going out of your way to point out something that people may not know. Quite petty behaviour.

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2024 15:55

Do you think that Starmer should name his children @Clavinova ?

Presumably Starmer is as unhappy to have left wing press talk about his children as any other?

I also think it is fair play that he and his wife are taking a different approach to someone like Blair, who regualrly wheeled out the kids for photo ops. In recent years PMs have been less willing to use kids in this way. Carrie Johnson did post pictures of her kids without their faces visible, I don't remember ever seeing pictures of the Sunak children. This is also probably a security thing, we all know how many crazies there are out there and with the attacks on MPs and threats to them and their families it must be a real worry.

Everyone who is at school with the Starmer children will know exactly who they are.

There were plenty of pictures of the Sunak girls. I think Gordon Brown was the last PM to keep his children private until his last day. Although now I think about it, Truss did too.

I was replying to;

My friend’s kids are at the school his children are at. They are not rich. A friend of mine used to teach there. They have a very varied intake of kids. It’s got a good reputation, sure, but it’s not serving some rich enclave.

I would have sent a daughter to one of the well known and excellent girls' comprehensive schools in the borough or the super-selective grammar a few miles away - therefore I am doubtful of the poster's anecdote. Perhaps you are not acquainted with the schools in the area - I am.

Quite. It's not like Johnson has ever named all his children or even recognised them all.

Why would I even care what school options are available to the child? It's none of my business and I'm not a weirdo.

What has what you would have done or not to do with anything?

You do what is best for your children, the Starmers do the same for theirs, including keeping their lives private.

MidLifeMayhem · 08/09/2024 16:04

I think this is one of the most pointless threads ever.

Come on OP. Are you not gonna give us some of your personal information. Is it only well known politicians that don't deserve privacy.
This is an extremely rude and disrespectful post.

OP flounced a few hours ago because PP were being mean to them

Efacsen · 08/09/2024 16:38

Wow I feel old now - Euan Blair is 38 - thought he was still in his late 20s

JSMill · 08/09/2024 16:41

Good for him. It will be far healthier for them to grow up outside of the spotlight.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2024 16:52

Checking out the school options available to other peoples children is very weird thing to me @Clavinova.

I think this thread demonstrates that Starmer has made the right decision to protect his children's privacy.😬

That's a joke right? Coming down heavy so far the riots stoped quickly just for a start. Ditching one word Ofsted judgements. Negotiating ends to strikes.

No not a joke. For me modern day version of Labour party is in a terrible state. Embarrassing almost. But yes - the riots clamp down - agree. Job well done. I think. I read an article that suggested they’d clamped down too quickly too hard, but I agree with you.

Ofsted - let’s see how that goes. Danger is of course that in future, no one has a clue if a school is good or not or how. But that is the Labour way. The aim perhaps.

Strikes - what by succumbing to their paymasters the trade unions? Slow hand clap. Train drivers do not need a pay rise. Teachers, nurses, doctors etc yes. Train drivers on final salary pensions with all the benefits. No. Sooner it’s all fully automated the better.
